gotta say that a solid S sounds really good about now. I think that if we can shut down some WR routes, the sacks will come more often. (see: OSU v UF).

Trade down to middle of the pack, get an extra draft coice and get Landry or Nelson. they shouldn't go too high.

I'll buy that. If they just gotta have the saftey or corner, move down and make the pick. I see no safties this year worth the eight. And most of the top dbs seems this year anyway you can pretty much flip the coin. Gotta feeling...we're going DT/DE with the eight.

Gotta lot of chips on that Leg of Spencer's. No love for the DTs ?
yea, i kinda messed up with the whole mock thing cuz there are too many scenarios that could play out. ill add the CB's, and there arent too many OT's worth taking except joe staley and gaither after thomas and blalock.

I agree with that. Taking a bad prospect at the 8 is worse than waiting on a potential guy. I'm just not in love with all day like a lot of guys are. I got danger Will Robinson written all over the guy. Couple of DT and DEs are starting to rise on the boards though.

I don't think people should be counting on trading down. If an opportunity presents itself I am sure we jump on it but the chances of that happening are very slim. I guess I am just a prepare for the worst and hope for the best kind of guy.

Regarding the topic, I like this situation:
1-Adams/Jamaal Anderson DE
2-Brandon Meriweather FS

Of course, if Branch is there at #8 I take him over Anderson, otherwise I take Anderson and hope Meriweather falls.

We have so many needs right now. I want the Texans to solidify 2 or 3 positions. By that I mean having good talented players and good depth. This way we don't have to worry as much and we can focus on other things. I would like to see them solidify both the lines this year. But I'll be happy if they go the secondary or runningback position.

I think it depends on what we do in free agency. If we manage to get Samuels or clements I'd be willing to pass on Landry & look elsewhere, perhaps the d-line with Branch or O-line if Thomas falls to us.

If we can get L. Davis then we can loosen up about Thomas if he falls to us & either look to trade down (10th-15th) or look to stockpile more picks. Or we could even pick the BPA since most of the top 10 positions are need postions for us anyway.

One of the difficulties for the secondary is no pass rush

Most def. you can't really tell too much now. wait for the combine, and Smith's moves in the FA. After thats over, the whole draft fog will start to lift more. but i think that the letters "B" "P" and "A" are gonna be tattooed to Rick Smith's forhead on April 8th.

The biggest need since the last draft completed was and still is the secondary. Hopefuly we address CB in FA and a FS in the draft.

this is a deep DE draft class with clear elite type prospects one of which will be there when the Texans pick 8th. having said that the Texans could take a RB with the #8 pick or top cb then see who falls in the 2nd. if there are a couple good ones still available in the second I would be fine with that. nab a QB in 3rd & franchise LT to develop in 4th :shades:

I think secondary is the bigger issue as we really need a new starting CB and FS, whereas we probably really only need to add one pass rusher to the line, plus you can always generate increased pass rush by altering your defensive scheme, blitzing more, etc. Luckily I think this draft if pretty deep at CB and FS, so if we can't get Adrian Peterson at #8 I'd almost be more inclined to take a DE there depending on who's available (Jamaal Anderson would be a very nice complement to Mario and I would definitely think hard about taking him if Peterson is gone, even though I'd hate to use another 1st rounder on a DLineman). I think we could still get a very good CB and/or FS in the 2nd round, maybe in the 3rd as well. If Peterson is gone at #8, either of these combinations could do wonders for our defense:

1) Leon Hall/Darelle Revis or whoever the top-rated CB is in the 1st then someone like Adam Carriker in the 2nd if he lasts, if not look for a guy like Jay Moore or Baraka Atkins in the 3rd or 4th and grab a FS or OLineman in the 2nd.

2) Jamaal Anderson in the 1st and then Chris Houston, Fred Bennett, or Brandon Meriweather in the 2nd round.

All this is also dependent on what happens in free agency.

Speaking of pass rushers, has anyone noticed Calais Campbell from Miami. He's only a sophomore and obviously not eligible for this draft but he started emerging as a very dominant pass rusher this year. Kenny Phillips on the same team is also a very nice S, the two of them could very well be the top rated prospects at their respective positions in the 2008 draft and should start up Miam's streak of 1st round picks again since that is likely going to be broken this year.

what do you think of Jarvis Moss, DE Florida? he ate Troy Smiths lunch in the BCS title game, I think he had three sacks, lost count of the hurries. seemed very explosive & disruptive, he could be another 2nd rd. option if still there.....:ok:

I haven't watched a whole lot of him yet because I didn't intially expect him to come out, plus I haven't moved on to studying DEs real thoroughly at this point. From what I have seen he looks like a pretty solid prospect, but I can't get into much specifics with him at this point, and from little I've seen so far it sounds like he'd be a late 2nd to early 3rd rounder, he'd be a solid option if he falls to the 3rd round, not sure I like him with our 2nd but I need to check him out more before I can say for sure.

between fred bennett and Chris Houston

who would you rather have?

i think i might pick fred bennett just because gamecock corners seem to do pretty good in the NFL
r-rob, sheldon brown, and joseph
but i havent seen neither of the two guys play much

Chris Houston is the better corner. He plays very physical and is solid in man to man. Houston played man to man the majority of his career and holds his own. He is the type of guy that we can bring in and if he get it he will take Petey's starting spot by the 4th game. Bennett is good, but likely a 3rd rounder. Houston if he falls to the third is a definate steal.

I agree with the 1st part of your post Mr teX, but not the part about Davis. Even though he is considered to be one of the top LT's, if not the top LT, in this FA, he is very slow from what I've heard. I think one person said he was a "snail" on another post about him. In any case I think we would end up overpaying him and he'd probably turn out to be another Todd Wade type of aquisition. Don't think Kubes wants this type anyway. JMHO!

Bennett will shoot up draft boards after his workouts. He will be like Joseph last year. Houston is an underrated guy but has really played well in man coverage. Didn't expect him to declare honestly.

Davis moves pretty well for his size, but he weighs somewhere between 366-381 lbs. He isn't a particularly good LT, he belongs at OG or maybe RT, and he isn't a very good fit for our system either.

ok so what about chris houston or daymeion hughes with out 2nd?
I'd be happy with Chris Houston in the 2nd round, partially depending on who else is available but there are very few guys that I expect to be available there that I'd rather have. I'm not as fond of Daymeion Hughes. I think Hughes would be a nice fit in a tampa cover 2 system or else would maybe be a better fit at FS than a traditional CB.

Now dont get me wrong I like Bennett. He is a good player and if we miss out on certain players I would take him in the second depending on how everything fell. My main problem with him is unlike most SC corners he does not like to really mix it up. Matter of fact I think he is the least physical of the recent ones, which is ashame since he is the tallest. I do think Houston is faster and just better in man coverage, add that to his physical style of play and he is just better in my opinion.
