Reggie "the Eraser" Nelson

First off, I am new here, and this is my first post. Let me say thanks to the moderators for providing this forum for us fans to rack our brains, and frankly, just give us something to do in the offseason.

Without futher ado, I will offer my thoughts on the Texans 8th pick in the upcoming NFL draft.

With the Texans season over, everyones attention has gone to free agency and the draft. The consensus, it seems, in this draft and offseason is to address the S, CB, OL, DL First. Lets face it, those are our most glaring needs, sorry Apple.

Almost every person has us taking LaRon Landry with the 8th pick in the upcoming draft. No one says anything about Reggie Nelson.

LaRon didn't impress me at all in the Sugar Bowl against an obvious weaker opponent. He is big, and can lay the wood, but his coverage is suspect. Someone on this board said he is good at everything, but not great in anything.

Look at Reggie Nelson, aka the Eraser. This kid is a ballhawk, can intimidate people, lay wood, cover, and block punts. The safeties for Florida combined for 14 interceptions this season! 14! Nelson has better speed, and is taller but not as built as Landry. I will be willing to trade better coverage skills over build any day, plus Nelson has plenty of time to bulk up if need be. I think he is the closest to being the next Brian Dawkins, and you cant deny how a premier safety can change games and even seasons, as in the case of the Eagles this season.

Dont get me wrong, I would like to see us draft one of these guys in the first, and finish building this defense. The Texans could be the next sleeping giant that no one is excited to play against. See Bears and Ravens.

Here is a few clips on the Eraser doing the darn thing. Check it out. Sorry about the music towards the end, I didn't make the tape, so.....

First thing: People do talk about Reggie Nelson. If you took a poll I think you would probably see a split between LaRon and Nelson. Safety is a popular position around here for our first round pick and I agree but if we waited until the second round I would bet we could still pick up a pretty good safety. IMO C.C. has earned his spot on the roster for next year, he may not be a great starter but he could be a experienced backup.

The thing is...the safety position is strong around the late first round...early second round area, so picking one in the first round as high as eight would have to mean that Rick Smith really felt like that safety was far better than the rest of the pack.

I would be very happy if it happened but it isn't our only option.

i think reggie is the closet thing to being the next ed reed. i want laron but I'm biased. both will be good in the nfl and woldn't mind either with the 8th.

Which secondary would you say is more superior, UF or LSU? Take out LaRon and Nelson and which is more superior? I think it comes to teamwork/leadership because they are both very athletic in their own way and seem that they will both be good NFL players.

Maybe there are some more Safeties in mid-late 1st round, but Nelson is a top 10-15 talent, IMO. Plus we can sure up our line in the second on both sides of the ball, or RB, or OLB. There are alot of great prospects that fill our needs in this draft.

tough to say because both played well this year and both rely on the leadership of their FS. i think LSU's cb are more physical and very good in run support while florida's are very good at man coverage and blanketing wideouts. i think florida had more interceptions this season as well. both benefit from maybe the best front sevens in cfb. i don't watch enough florida games to really break down their secondary.

Our position in the draft is good. We have a pick within the 5-10 range, which is valuable because it is a good spot for teams to trade up in the draft. So off top our draft position is already valuable. It is also a spot where you can select a top player that may have fallen a bit for whatever reason. It should be an interesting draft for us and overall.
