Did Nelson's stock go up or down today?

I stopped concentrating on the game after the 1st half, did Nelson play well? I noticed Smith was throwing away from him alot.

I have only seen the game broadcast by FOX as of right now. I haven't gotten my hands on any good tape yet, but he didn't really hurt it. His name wasn't called much, but tOSU passing game was not there. He locked up man vs man sometimes and did well. All the UF DB's played well and allowed the DL extra time to get to Smith. Nelson was a part of it, but he didn't really stand out. He is still the #1 S and should still be ranked in the teens overall.

Smith was throwing away from everyone tonight including his own receivers.

All in all Nelson didn't hurt or help his stock. T. Smith was the loser in that department tonight.

LOL!!! True...but you know Smith may have played himself into our # 40 pick if we choose to go that route...JUST SAYIN :stirpot:

Nelson never even showed up on the TV!!!

And if anything thats a good thing. The gator DBs had everyone locked down ALL GAME LONG!!!

Nelson took a bad angle and missed the tackle on Pittman's touchdown run. That was the one bad thing I saw. Other than that you are right. Troy Smith threw to the right side of the field all night long. Nelson really didn't have a lot of chances to make plays. I'll be If Ginn Jr. didn't get injured we would have seen Nelson a lot more.

Ginn reminded me so much of Mathis today it wasn't even funny. Huge Kickoff return and then he hurts his foot and has to be in a space boot. It sent a shiver down my spine who close they resembled each other.

I think the tater tot looked very ordinary with Ginn Jr. on the side lines in a soft cast. Made a difference. I beileve he is a day two guy now.

I hope we draft Nelson even if its only so I have insurance in case he moves on after I get a jersey (Nelson is my last name). At least he would never join Gaffney and Davis in my closet.

Of course to avoid selfishness we really need a FS too.

This was a great performance by the DBs, but keep in mind Ginn was not there. I wonder how much his leadership has to do with it.

No way...if his trade talk was that low he would stay another year. Why go into the draft as a junior and get drafted in the later rounds.

Nelson played well. He was beat on that one play but most safeties will get beat in those situations from time to time. He moved across the field to fill the open running lane where Pittman had outrun two tacklers and broke outside but could not make the tackle. You can't make every tackle I suppose.

He also took a bad angle on the opening kick-off that Ginn ran back....

But IMO, he's still the number 1 safety coming out...His name wasn't called alot, but you also didn't see him messing up a lot....everyone misses tackles at times so I don't think he really hurt his stock at all...

His angle didn't look that bad, because he would have been in position had he not had a slight tug on the back of his jersey to slow him down. Some people don't think it was a real hold (and I'm not saying it is) but it was enough to keep him from making the play.

I like Reggie Nelson. In fact I hope we take him at eight.

But the angle he took against Ginn was bad.

He underestimated his speed.

DOWN.

He looked slow in comparison. Took bad angles. Late first round, early 2nd at best.

LaRon Landry is #1 in the NFL Draft at safety.

It's so obvious that your comments aren't biased...

Did you see Landry in his bowl game ?

First off, how am I biased here? I watched both bowl games, and both players.

So to answer your question, yes, I saw Landry in his bowl game. I saw LaRon laying the hat, and pick off Brady Quinn.

Ive seen LaRon lead LSU in tackles the last 2/3 seasons. I have seen enough if LaRon, and not enough of Nelson. So before you start to play your "im smarter than you because I watch more football" card, dont. I know what im talking about, and LaRon is better than Nelson period.

You need to calm down....Try not to take offense just because someone challenges your line of thinking...I could care less about how much football you watch, or how smart you are...I come here mostly to talk about football, and your knowledge or status in life is pretty much not relevant to me....Save the personal attacks and feelings for someone else....

The reason I said your "COMMENTS" were biased is because you have Landry's name in your sig, so therefore I wouldn't expect you to give an honest evaluation of a player that you freely admitted that you haven't even seen a lot of....

You are saying Nelsons stock dropped because of a few missed tackles in his bowl game, but I recall Landry missing a few in his bowl game as well...So did his stock drop too ? He was also playing No speed Notre Dame...Nelson's team just won the N'tl title last night, and though he missed a tackle.....one whole tackle....you're saying his stock dropped ?

You're right....totally unbiased way of thinking....:pigfly:

speed, battling back when beaten, bad technique, gets by on athletic ability & benefits from a strong supporting cast.

I don't agree with you on those points, but I won't argue them....

The topic of the thread is whether his stock dropped...

If that's how you feel about him, that's fine....But that's how he's been playing all year....

Unless you saw all that in last nights game....

What I mean with that comment, is that Ive seen Landry for 3 years playing high level football. Leading the 2ndary each year. And this is really the first year ive heard of Nelson. I guess I wasnt specific enough with my comment.

It just seemed that he took bad angles on tackles, and the opening kickoff return. I just expected more from him in this big game.

Nelson's Mom passed away around Christmas . It would be hard to play the biggest game of your life that soon after your Mom died .

ONE ASSISTED TACKLE thats Reggies box scorecard against OSU. the other games I watched (of Reggie) where against Arkansas in the SEC Championship game (one assisted, one solo, one int.) & LSU (one assisted, two solo) where Landry was clearly the more productive FS (9 solo, 3 assisted).

I was hoping to see more from Reggie, some fullfilment of his potential. Landry is a more complete FS, most ready to enter the NFL therefore #1 prospect at that position. so its not impossible for me given the game last night combined with his big game performances this season to downgrade him from being a top 10 pick (if thats if fact where he has been rated) :twocents:

I'm grateful we don't draft on box score alone...at least I hope not. I have a feeling the FO will be looking at the game tapes of both and not the box score. After what I saw in both games I don't think either of them really helped their draft stock. At the same time, I don't think they hurt it either. I hear everyone's comments on both..but dont know enough about either to say I would much rather have one than the other. I think either would be an enormous asset to the team.

I'm really not sure what Landry has to do with this thread honestly.....

But I'm not really a stat guy anyway...I like to actually watch the games, and the player and not judge talent from a stat line....You talk about Reggie Nelson's supporting cast, and I guess LSU's supporting cast is chop suey....

And never mind the fact that Nelson had twice as many INT's on the year as Landry....Just pick out a few games where he didn't have a lot of tackles, and declare him the better FS....

nelson and landry had the same gameplan, really. stay in coverage, completely shutdown the ability to pass the ball deep, and let the front 7 do their job. they weren't asked to be playmakers, because they didn't have to be.

In bowl games where teams have a month to prepare, good head coaches don't tend to challenge the top playmaker on a defense, so neither guy really were put in too many positions to impact the game. To figure out if guys can play it usually takes watching a guy more than once anyway.

I think either would be an enormous asset to the team.

I agree with this statement....

Honestly I wouldn't be upset with either one....

I think Landry is a solid, fundamental safety....I view Nelson as a flare...a spark....

Landry is a hard, hitter that you feel in your bones....Nelson hit's with a pop, the kind that makes you jump out your seat....

I think there are pro's and cons with both of them........But I'm not going to sit here and talk negatively about one, just because I prefer the other one....Neither one have established themselves as the clear cut # 1 safety IMHO.... I just happen to like one over the other....no biggie

That's how I'm thinking. I don't think there is a clear cut #1 which was what i was hoping for after the bowl games. I'm afraid this could turn into a hindsight comment in a few years. Like if the one we pick is decent but the other is the next ed reed. hopefully we get an ed reed!

LSU, Arkansas & Ohio State are the games I watched. I base my opinion on those games not just stats (from those games).

I also noticed that Landry played more up on the line & was asked to provide more run support, while Nelson played back more like a centerfielder. it does make it hard to evaluate & come to a clear undisputed grade based on match-ups, schemes and personel. I just don't want to fall into the measureable trap that can become the scoop post combine. I do base my opinion on game film 1st :)

I think I kinda-sorta-maybe-almost agree with you....

I'm not really making a case against Landry....I think they are both good in their own right....

Like I said....I wouldn't be upset with either....I just prefer one a little more than the other....

He also took a bad angle on the opening kick-off that Ginn ran back....

I think he would have had an opportunity to tackle him if he wasn't held. I know, I know it was a slight tug, but he slightly tugged him from behind by his shoulder pads and jersey. It was a hold definately IMO. Bad angle or not, the hold ruined any shot of him tackling Ginn, Jr.

Why don't you all go back and watch that opening kickoff again, the only reason Ginn broke free is because OSU got away with 2 blatant holds, one being on Nelson and one being on #4 at the wedge! Don't get me wrong Ginn is fast but holding helps you get to the corner a little bit too. The rushing TD I will give you that he took a bad angle, but not the kickoff. He was also right around the area when I think #22 made the INT and looks like he might have been able to make a play if he didn't see him have the bead on it. I would be happy with either Nelson or Landry in the 1st and thinks that the route we should go, with a trade down of course to get a couple more picks.

The rushing TD I will give you that he took a bad angle, but not the kickoff.

I really hat to argue this, because I really like Nelson...

But he did take a bad angle on that kick-off...I could care less about the hold...He underestimated Ginn's speed and thought he'd be able to come down hill and make that play....When a player runs by you like that, that means you took a bad angle...I'm not even sure there was even much of a hold....and besides he wouldn't have been getting held if he would have took a better angle and forced Ginn back inside where his help was....

I'm not even saying it was his fault he took a bad angle...all I know is that he got burned to the outside because he came flatter than he should have....

sorry, but he wasn't going to get ginn. i don't care what angle he took, ginn was gone

No, I didn't say he was gonna catch him, but I did say he was held. He was definately held. Might not of been as blatant as the facemask by the OSU kicker on the following kickoff, but it was a hold. Semi hold or complete takedown, same thing. 10 yard penalty.

What kind of tape could you get your hands on, Young Texans fan? Do you know somebody in the NFL or with Ohio State or Florida?

I like Nelson and would love for the Texans to draft him.

His comment that Ted Ginn should be playing in the SEC because of his speed was great.

Family at florida and I know some scouts because I've been trying to work my way into the business. So basicly, my families tape is going to be similar to Fox's I imagine...following the ball mostly. I'm hoping the scouts I talk to focused more on certin draft eligable players.

Nelson did nothing to his stock. He was in a deep centerfield position all game. He was far enough off the ball that the Fox camera didn't even have him in the picture most of the time. He did his job in coverage.

For the poster that referenced Landry's int. in his game...the ball was deflected by another LSU player and Landry kind of just happened upon it. Similar situation w/Branch in his game.

Another thing about Landry, he actually caused Zenon to drop (but not really after replays) the interception by stripping it out of his hands.

LaRon Landry reminds me of a Brian Dawkins type of player. Powerful but still has good speed and ball hawking ability.

speed, battling back when beaten, bad technique, gets by on athletic ability & benefits from a strong supporting cast.

He couldn't have posssibly hurt his stcok after that debacle, but he didn't show why he's the better of the 2 IMO.

the above are my thoughts exactly when i watched him. He's not instinctive like a FS needs to be to be successful. He's fast, but that alone won't get it on the next level, you've got to anticpate & "bait" the Qb a little at times. At least landry blew up the reverse (even though he didn't make the tackle) & made some plays. Nelson benefited from the fact that Florida's ends were running 100m sprints around OSU's tackles.

Another thing about Landry, he actually caused Zenon to drop (but not really after replays) the interception by stripping it out of his hands.

Actually to tell you the truth he made that interception...it never touched the ground. LaRon only interfered because he was running full speed to cover that receiver and probably would have intercepted it himself if Zenon hadn't been there. Plus he didn't strip it...it is just the body contact between the two LSU players caused Zenon to juggle it.
