Bring back the hometown guy

Michael Lewis would look great back at safety in our secondary. He's not starting in Philly and is expecting to be with another team next year. Bring him home!

Resurrecting this thread since it was discussed on 610 this morning.
Lewis is UFA and from Richmond. They said he would love to come back home and play for the Texans.
Since he lost the starting SS role in Philly, and is a home town guy, he might be had for a reasonable price.
The question is, is he an upgrade to what we have, even though we don't look to be in the market for a SS?
I don't know much about the guy, but from what was said on the radio, he should be a definate upgrade to Glen Earl.
Thoughts?

There are reasons why he was benched; none of which were injury. Issues in pass coverage, bad angles, issues in tackling. Sounds like we already have all those in our secondary.

Then we should trade our 1st rounf pick for him and next years first round pick for him :pigfly:

We don't need to trade anything for him. HE IS A UFA!!! Which means its HIS choice where he signs NOT the teams! If he wants to play here I say bring him in, and still draft Nelson or Landry in the 1st. Think what you may of him, but he is a much better player than either Earl or Brown, and he did have an off year this year.

He will not command that much salary and we should definitely bring in any safety be it free or strong who has a pulse! Definitely take every look at any viable safety to upgrade.

that would be a good idea. isnt he the uncle of lamar cons. running back jacquizz rodgers and his brother james?

Dunta Robinson
*Nate Clements- Lives here in the off season
*Michael Lewis- Houston guy, Pro bowler
CC or Glenn- or Draft

That is a big time improvement from what we have had.

Clements/Samuel-Landry/nelson-Lewis-D-Rob

damn, looks ight to me

and yeah michael had a bad year this year but who says that he can't rebound and become the pro-bowler he used to be

it doesnt matter if you have steve atwater and ronnie lott as your safeties, if you have no pass rush, your secondary will be exposed!!! We need to start up front before we think about safeties. Give me a true pass rusher and a dt that can create havoc then give me a safety.

No, we don't.
I get your point, and agree with the need for a pass rush but...
It IS possible to consider potential safeties AND sign them without neglecting the DL...
Can you say multi-task?

Who's your free safety? We're back to the original problem. Lewis is a strong safety, and was benched because of coverage issues. Glenn Earl and CC Brown are both backup strong safeties, and nothing more. If you go with Clements/Robinson/Lewis, then you'd HAVE to draft a safety early. Like round one or two.

I like taking the best FS in the draft (IMO LaRon Landry/LSU) with the 8th pick. Get a CB start opposite DRob (Samuels from NE) and if we can swing it cap wise, get the OLB help we need from the FA OLB in Chicago (Briggs).

These moves, plus what we already have and we move up to a D that will be top 10-15 IMO and that dog will hunt. We are much closer to having a killer D than a killer O IMO and I would rather see us build the Texans version of the Ravens or Chicago vs the Colts anyway. :aikido:

That could go either way. We could also go with shut down coverage and create coverage sacks for our DL. We obviously need a big body in the middle to couple with Maddox but we also need a legit #2 corner and FS.

If he's an upgrade over Earl, then bring him in. End of discussion.

1. He's not going to cost alot
2. He's an UFA
3. Depth is always good
4. More competition

It wouldn't hurt to to pick up secondary help in FA (ie. Clements, Lewis, Hamlin, etc..), and then draft that DT in the 1st round. We maybe able to trade down and pick up another pick or two. Someone I've been checking into that may fit what the Texans are looking for at DT is Amobi Okoye from Louisville. He's 6'2" and 315 lbs. and his draft stock has been rising. Some have him going in the middle of the 1st round. He's a bit raw (only 20 yrs old this year), but he might be the best DT in the draft, and he has alot more upside. JMHO!

Signing Michael Lewis then drafting Alan Branch at number 8 would go a long way towards improving this defense. That still leaves wholes at FS and OLB, but if we can get consitant pressure on the QB and penetration in the backfield, those wholes get a whole lot smaller. And lets not forgett we get a more experianced and healthy Mario and a more experianced DeMeco (who has to call plays as a MLB). Im excited about our defense.

Signing the UFA FS from Seattle, Hamlin 6'2" 219 (2nd rd pick out of Arkansas) would help the team a lot more IMO.

This move, combined with getting CB Samuels from NE really upgrades the D going into the '07 draft and gives us a lot more options to consider.

Great move to bring him here, but this could also be good because we could move earl back to his original position, free safety. I would like Lewis and Earl back at safety, I think that is a good enough safety duo to make some noise with our defense, once we increase our pass rush even more... wow

and bring in Lewis as well, Make Earl and Brown the backup safeties. I like the looks of this (doubt it happens, but if it did it would be sweet)

LCB- Samuels
SS- Lewis
FS- Hamlin
RCB- Robinson

Then we could focus on the Trenches with most of the draft.

I mentioned bringing Lewis in on the cheap several months ago and haven't wavered on my believe that he would be a worthwhile, cheap investment.
