If YOU had the 1st pick in the draft....

Who would you take or who do you feel the #1 player is in the draft right now regardless of the fact that Detroit is taking?

For me right now Calvin Johnson is El Uno.

my top six then there is the rest- depends on underclassman

1. Brian Brohm QB Loisville 6-4 224

2. JaMarcus Russell QB LSU 6-5 252

3. Calvin Johnson WR Georgia Tech 6-4 228

4. Adrian Peterson RB Oklahoma 6-2 218

5. Joe Thomas OT Wisconsin 6-7 310

6. Adams Gains DE Clemson 6-5 260

Russel. What if right....I think he is a big time prospect. After tonight, he's Big Al's #1. Best Arm since Favre. Best prospect since Marino.

I think Russell has a better arm than Favre did.

Did you hear what Howie Long said in the broadcast?

He can throw it 100 yards on his feet, 60 yards on a knee, and 40 yards sitting down.

michael vick can run the 40 in under 4 seconds!

Yeah and a lot of people were wrong on him. Let's see wasn't he the home town guy Pittsburg passed on ? I wonder how many SB's that cost them ?
You wanna now ague the merrits of Passing on Joe Montana untill the fifth ?

Third, but you point is understood

Bio: Surprisingly enough Joe Montana’s most amazing stat could be that he was selected in the 3rd round of the 1979 NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers. The most successful post season NFL quarterback in NFL history was a master of late quarter comebacks and clutch performances.

Howwie said 85 on feet.

Either way it is impressive.

His 58 yard TD toss was off balence and scrambling. He wasn't even set and moving a different way and threw the ball almost perfectly 60 yards.

that doesn't make it true at all. that just sort of proves my point further. it's become a wives tale.

After tonight, what is it you don't like about the guy Kats ? He's improved every year. He goes through the motions, even with some bad mechnics almost effortlessly ? Big time arm ...Acurate, what is wrong with him ? Or is it just an LSU thingy ?

What Howie Long said about JR's ability to throw it 85 yards from a standing position is far from the first time a commentator has brought this up. It's standard fare whenever LSU is on tv. In one broadcast this year, the commentator (I don't remember who exactly) said he physically witnessed JR fling it like that. In fact, he asked him to throw from about the 20 as far as he could, and it landed at the goal line on the other end of the field. He's also thrown it 50 yards with one knee on the ground.

The guy's arm strength is just unreal. And his poise, judgment, accuracy and touch have improved considerably since his freshman year. He still has a brain cramp once in a while, but the guy completes 68 percent of his passes. At this point, I'd say the biggest improvement he needs to make is to secure the football better when two or more defenders are on him rather than try to force a throw. He's fumbled a couple of times doing that this year.

i wouldn't draft johnson first because i think this will be the greatest draft in history for WRs and you can get an incredible one at the top of the second round. to give you an idea, santonio holmes, last year the first taken, wouldn't be drafed unil the 3rd round this year, if that.

so, quinn or russell.

keep alan branch in mind as an enormous sleeper BTW.

The only question I would have about Russel is his ability to keep his weight under control. He looks like he could baloon (just might be a body type thing) and he isn't overly fast currently (good enough, but not fast) and if the weight got away from him, he could become too slow and be like Byron in J-ville. The kid is good though.

If I had the first pick I would go Joe Thomas. He is grading out as the best LT prospect since before Ogden. Now that is a high grade. Quinn is considered an average QB prospect, nothing real special. I like Brohm and Russel more than Quinn, but that is me.

No LBs, DEs, even come close to the top pick. Only two guys even warrant the consideration, and that is Johnson and Thomas. A great WR seems to come out every year, but a great LT only every 5 years.

So that is my vote.

calvin johnson. then there's everyone else.

oakland is picking #1.

Calvin Johnson then there's Andre Johnson, the Johnson brothers. two #1's, serious cap space into the same position, too bad Carr doesn't have the protection (Joe Thomas) or the arm strength (JaMarcus Russell) to get them the ball.

if the Texans had the 1st pick they would be torn between those two not another #1 WR. also the Texans will have to address Andres next contract soon :money:

I understand & believe in taking the bpa, Rick Smith believes in taking bpa, however Kubiak has proven he will consider the needs of the team first and make a football decision. Rick Smiths job should be getting him that bpa while enhancing the value of that pick, in this case trading down just far enough (one or two spots maximum) so Thomas or Russell can be aquired as bpa while addressing need within the structure of the salary cap.

so if the Texans have the 1st pick & Calvin Johnson is the top #1 pick (ala Reggie Bush) with a decent GM the Texans trade down, pick up value/need & bpa :)

If I'm Al Davis, I have to take JaMarcus Russell.

1. He has #1 talent.
2. He's a need pick.
3. He has the best arm to enter the league since...Jeff George?
4. He could bring Randy Moss back from the dead.
5. Davis can erase the mistake of passing on Ben Roethlisberger.

i agree with a lot of this, no surprise, including your rather erudite notion of the best pure arm in recent memory. jeff george wasted a very special gift from god.

what about Matt Leinart :shades:

people people people....

there's no way al davis is drafting a QB in the first.

And Nick Saban isn't going to Bama....

Oh wait.....

A pair of lips will tell you anything....You should know that first hand...

Exactly, its because none of them have 4.3 speed! Davis SHOULD draft a QB R1, but until he's man enough to swallow his pride, he'll have stop gap solutions at QB until then.

it's al davis' philosophy more than anything that states they're not drafting a QB. al davis thinks the team can win a super bowl EVERY year. to him, even though they're picking #1, they're just a good quarterback away from getting back into the super bowl. and a "good quarterback" isn't someone who has to sit on the bench for two years and learn the ropes. al davis is like 80. he's not going to sit around and go through a rebuilding phase. he has NEVER been about rebuilding, and has NEVER accepted that fact. he's going to get a veteran QB, draft calvin johnson and go from there.

Not drafting a QB 1st round the past 15 drafts straight after saying you would never take a QB R1 after the Todd Marinovich disaster in 1991 is those lips telling you the truth. They've passed on Leinart, Rivers, Pennington, and had the possibility of trading up for better QBs too. Im not sure if Davis will ever lived up to his word, but as of now he has so don't treat this as a big fat lie.

In reference to throwing it 85 yards and 50 yards on one knee...who cares.

Unfair to link the two, but Kyle Boller had a similar arm. I saw footage of him on one knee throw the ball almost through the goal posts from the 50.

Not to say Boller = Russell by any stretch.

Big arm does not equal greatness...see Montana

I don't know to what extent Al id running the show any more... he doesn't look very healthy. They'd be foolish to pass on Russell unless a top notch FA QB was available. Their D is solid, they need a QB badly.

I like Russell a lot, his size and that arm make him special. But his mobility really is average. He's not close to Culpepper, much less VY or McNabb. He's got 79 net rushing yards in 3 years in college (I know it includes sacks). Given that he's 270 lbs as a 21 yr. old and isn't very sculpted as is, he's not going to get lighter or more agile.

As a pocket passer, I love Russell, but he's not much of a running threat. He may not be a statue, but he's a pocket passer. He's got good feet and is somewhat elusive, but he's not fast. He's a rocket armed 21 yr. old with a huge body. He throws a great deep ball and is plenty accurate. That's it. I think he can have some pretty immediate success though.

what about Matt Leinart :shades:

I won't argue with you that at the time of the draft Lionhart was the most "ready" QB coming out. What I will argue is the guy has a wind up. Russel does not. Neither does Cutler. Both have very quick releases. Russel's is so effortless he has VY disease and tends to shot put the ball on mid to short routes. But when he cocks and gets serious with it...the rock is coming out very hot.

Joe Thomas. You can win a superbowl with an average QB(Baltimore) or Average D(St Louis). What did these teams have in common? Strong offensive lines anchored by stud LTs: Ogden in Baltimore and Pace in St Louis. In bioth cases the strong LTs kept their QBs from being sacked and allowed the team to play to its offensive strength(passing for the rams and running for the ravens).

Thus I say Joe Thomas with the first pick.

you're not winning a super bowl with an average defense. st louis' was ranked #7 in the league, #1 against the run.

I stand corrected. I thought they were a pourous Defense and the Rams essentially won becuase they scored so many points. Also wasn t St Louis one agianst the Run becuase opponents had to constantly throw beuase the Rams would be able to score in torrents and thus had big leads?

the rams really show why a good defense is so essential....

in 1999, they have the #1 offense and #7 defense. they win the super bowl.

in 2000, they have the #1 offense and the #24 defense. they lose in the first round of the playoffs.

that says it all right there.

An old poster on these MBs did a very nice study of offense vs. defense and winning championships a while back. Looking back at that thread here are a couple interesting points:

In the last 20 seasons, only two teams have won the Super Bowl without a top-10 overall defense that season and no Super Bowl winners have had a scoring defense ranked worse than 8th in the league.

Six different times a team with an offense ranked below 16th in the league won the Super Bowl, 5 of those 6 had a top-7 ranked defense.

Here's a link to the thread if you want to go check that out:
