Assessing the season

Certainly there were things about this season that disappointed. However, I think we definitely took a big step forward. After week 3, we were 6-7. That's not exactly inspiring but it's a long ways from 2-14. The defense once the rookies got a little experience and once Faggins returned became an above average NFL defense.

Simply plugging in a decent punter would have gotten us to 8 wins this year. I think next year's defensive unit with Weaver, Mario, TJ, AMaddox, Ryans, Greenwood, Dunta, etc... is 3 players away from being a top NFL defense. We need a FS (not too pricey), a CB, and either a SLB or another DL. I think a DL rotation of Mario, Weaver, Payne, Maddox, TJ, Kalu? will be very formidable against the run and at least average at rushing the passer. A solid FS will really improve the pass coverage and a good CB would turn this thing into a potentially great one... Dunta on the #2 and Faggins as a nickel CB is a very promising situation.

Offensively, this coaching staff is obviously very competant. Unfortunately, we are still weak everywhere we were weak going into this season. However, I trust the staff to fill some of the holes. At least we no longer need a TE or a #2 Wr. I think a good FA OLman and another via the draft will go a long way into transforming this offense into a solid one. Of course, the question mark is at QB. But, even if that situation remains the same, we know that this staff will remove Carr for Rosenfels if it makes sense to do so.

6 wins with the worst punter in the league and huge and numerous injuries at key positions. 6 wins while starting 5 rookies in week one and changing the entire concept of the offense and defense. We made huge strides this year. With a good offseason and some good fortune regarding current and future injuries, this team may actually win more than it loses next year.

What do you'll think?

Given that we had 3 offensive 'gurus,' I'm very dissappointed in this offense. Remember, we had Capers and Pendry last year--one is an AC, the other is out of football--yet, we averaged a 'whopping' half point more this year. Our QB threw more tds than ints last year and had better #'s going down the stretch--on a positive note this year we had almost a third fewer sacks...

We added a #2/#3 WR, a dual threat TE, drafted 2 first day OL, signed an All-Pro center--bottom line, our offense put up 86 passing yds (less than 200 total) and scored 1 TD against the 31st ranked defense. Folks, if our defense had not played better, this year would have been a disaster.

We did nothing to build on for next year for the offense--what did we put in place and succeed at?

I personally think we are one playmaker away on the offense before it clicks in right. I think we are fine at WR and TE. I hope we get either a QB or RB that can cause some mayhem.

There is only so much a coordinator can do when you have a patchy O-line, a quarterback that is incapable of throwing passes 10-20 yards down field, and a swiss army knife of starting backs. Hey but they had some nice targets for that QB.

And moving Pitts to OLT ? Get a grip. We're short an OLT. There's not one on the board at the eight pick. We're already in trouble for '07. Punter or not.

I don't know that we are in trouble at left tackle but a few guys getting healthy would help greatly. If Spencer makes it back then we are in great shape. If not then we need to hope that Weigert can get back to playing forrm. This would allow us to move Winston back to the left side although I think in the long run he is our right tackle. More depth would be nice but we can do well with that arrangement.

There in lies the problem. We are still doing the "If" such and such happens about the O-line. IF Spencer is "Ok" if Weigert is "OK" we might be able to scrape through a season if we move so an so over here and shuffle ol whats his name here we can bandaid this thing. Just fix the dang thing and don't count on anyone being back from injury to do it.
