2008 draft strengths

If Brohm and Russell stay...

Brohm
Russell
Booty
Henne
Brennan
Ainge

Still goes about 4 deep that should receive 1st-2nd round grades even if Brohm and Russell declare this year.

Long
Baker
Barton
Hills

And it's deep in OG's as well, at least better than this year's crop.

Build the defense this year, then go offense in 08. 07 Draft is much deeper in defense than 08.

well, it does help to consider the next years draft to determine who you take this year. especially when we need some OL help and everyone wants to get rid of carr. doesnt help if you take crappy OL/QB this year and then take crappy defense in 08 because the 2 draft classes contrast each other.

Steve Slaton, Darren Mcfadden, Kenny Phillips....

Kenny Phillips is going to be the best S from Miami. He is a better covering ST. He is slightly smaller, but hits bigger and covers better. He would be the top S in the draft regardless. Nelson is the top now, but Phillips would be over him. He is only a soph. though.

I read where some expert said that Slaton was the fastest guy he's seen in pads . He mentioned that he thought Neon Deon was fast but Slaton's faster .

RBs that could be in next years draft.

Adrian Peterson - Probably entering 07 draft
Marshawn Lynch - Probably entering 07 draft
Mike Hart
Albert Young
Darren McFadden - Junior next year
Steve Slaton - Junior next year
Jamaal Charles - Junior next year
Ray Rice - Junior next year

Im willing to wait another year to get our franchise RB

That is why next year is potentially the best RB class in history.

Unless AP falls to us at #8...2007 RB class is not deep. We need to fix our OL.

I saw Carl Lewis run the 100 in UT Memorial stadium. I was sitting on the 40 yd line watching Deon "Prime Time" return a punt for TD.

Deon is the fastest man I have ever seen.

I have stood next to Earl Campbell and Herschel Walker. I saw Jim Brown in the LA airport. At 60 years old Jim Brown is the most imposing figure of a RB that I have ever seen.

Intersting idea, but you don't go into a draft determined to focus on a certain area of your team anticipating that the next year's draft will be weak in that area, sounds like a recipe for disaster. Draft the best players that are available now that fit your system and will create the best impact on your team, you never know how next year's guys will play, get injured, etc. and grade out. Keep your mind on the here and now.

It is always good to be prepared with what the expectations are for the following draft. Simply from a standpoint of being involved with a trade that includes another team's #1 pick for the following year. It may not happen, but if it does you will have a general idea of what you may be looking at.

Yes you should be aware of the level of talent coming out, but you should not plan your current draft choices around anticipating what may be available a full year down the road and avoid taking players at certain positions because of this.

the point i was trying to make was that everybody is screaming for an OL or QB in the 1st round THIS year, when there is clearly a dropoff of talent after Thomas at OL and Quinn isnt even that good.

I think that the BPA at our choice may be tied with 2 or 3 players. not necessarily a standout best player.

It is always good to be prepared and "plan" for next years draft. ie. RB, Qb etc like mentioned above. However you definitly get in trouble when you base it on 1 player you want next year.

After seeing next year's RB situation in draft, I pray we wait. I agree that we should go Defense this year hard.

There is potentially a really good RB year next year if all those guys come out early, and our offense will suck hard next year if we don't upgrade at RB and then concentrate on defense again this year. I would love to fix the defense up all the way but we have to spend some picks on offense too, all of this depending on what we can do in free agency as well. We have to take the best guys that are available at each pick that fill a position of some kind of need, we can't predetermine to only get certain positions, especially 4 months before the draft arrives.

Well, Hollywood John McClain's secret scoure agrees with you. On the one hand you've got Richard Smith talking about trade downs and getting more picks. On the other hand HJM's secret pal gaurenteeing that the first pick will be offense. I look at the board and I see a ton of tallent on the defensive side of the ball. I see a lot of reaches on offensive guys. Thery're five deep at RB. Three deep at TE. Four deep at WR. One deep at fullback. So which Offensive palyers are you talking about ? They may reach for a day one QB prospect. I don't think that's prudent, but what do I know. What I do know is there are certainly a lot of grey beards, reaches , street free agents and misses on the deffensive line. And there are plethera of prospects on the board at those positions. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if they went DE and DT at this point with the quotes from Kubiak on the front page. Like you say it's early. Just reading our roster and what is out there in the draft and FA.
