I keep hearing that after Joe Thomas there is no one left really worth taking.

After 5 years Im tired of watching Carr get abused, and the pocket forming less than desirable. No matter who is the QB the O-line needs fixing.

What is the negatives about this guy?

Well I'm not going to bang on the guy for sure. Last two tackles I banged on...both ended up going to the pro bowl this year. I thought McNiel and Brown were both too slew footed . But obviously that was wrong. Both have worked very well in thier systems. The only question is do we have the will to pull the trigger on one of these guys early. We'd be in the minorty of the board if we said yes. So...I've been looking at the Seth Wand type prospects. The small school guys with the numbers to project into NFL OLTs.
I hate tramping down the Wand highway...but there is no dening that the strenth of the draft is in the d-line this year. If they want the DB, they better get one early.

I don't think this is entirely accurate. I think the usual sentiment is that there is no one else who is ranked as a top 10 selection. Joe Staley would be a quality pick if he would slip to us in the second.

Jake Long would be a very high pick - possibly a top 10 - if he declared (he's a junior). But he's said he intends to return for his senior season. There is still a chance he could change his mind when he realizes how high he will go and how much money he will be passing up; not to mention the possibility of having an injury his senior year.
 
Levi Brown is way over-inflated due to playing for a prominent school.

The guy doesn't move well side-to-side at all. He's also caught off-balance in pass pro frequently. Weighing in at over 325, he should be playing guard or maybe right tackle. He's got no business playing left.

He is a great run blocker, though - I'll give him that. the guy is much better at taking it to the defense than he is holding his ground. Unfortunately, what we really need is a guy who can hold a pocket.

The guy should go in the 3rd, but due to people needing to find an OT to take with Joe Thomas off the board, he's the next "obvious" candidate. NFL Draft Countdown ranks him as a 1st rounder and the mocksters usually follow that site pretty aggressively.

Joe Staley is a much better prospect, but he's from Central Michigan so he doesn't get anywhere near the attention.

By the end of the combine, he will have the attention of everyone. I think his ranking will be a shooting star. Although from a small school, he's had good production against quality opponents such as Penn State, Boston College, Kentucky and Michigan. He also practices against a quality DE - team mate Dan Bazuin. I'm worried that he won't slip to us in the 2nd.

That pretty much sums it up. I wouldn't draft Brown until the 3rd. He is slow out of his stance, plays too upright, and has shown no ability to move to the second level. His lateral movement and "bucket step" are poor as well and rather slow. He's huge, similar stature to McNeil, but nowhere close to the same skills.
 
speaking of other LT prospects I was impressed with Mario Henderson, FSU. great looking in pass protection with wide base, keeps his hands inside, stays balanced with good footwork. not sure about his strength, but does have the frame @ 6-6 307 to add weight. would be an investment for the future, in a draft short of quality lineman he might be a 5th rd pick or even higher.

i see the same play from jake long. thankfully he's staying in college, because he's no LT right now, not even close. and to hear him called a top 10 prospect by some is a joke.

i've already gone on record with my sleeper tackle: Nello Faulk, Florida Atlantic. 6'7, 300, he's real lean and has long arms. reminds me of d'brickashaw ferguson. he shutdown Gaines Adams this year, who's a top 5 pick. he's perfect for a zone-blocking scheme. and i hear the falcons love him.

I've been saying the same thing about Long since the year started and still am now. Good to see I'm not alone. Gaither is a whole different beast, and he is going to be amazing.

I like your sleeper pick, I'll look into him more.
 
doubt the Texans would be interested in Nello Faulk, he didnt miss a game in four years & no serious injury's:sarcasm:
