Tony Dungy quote

I was just on Indy's Web site. I just love this quote by Dungy:

“Just as invigorating as Monday night was, this is disappointing for us.
It’s one of the bigger disappointments we’ve had since I’ve been here. You find out about people. You find out how you bounce back from disappointment. So, we’ve got to come back, play well and win this coming Sunday, then come back and get ready for the playoffs. There’s nothing we can do about this game right now.
I take the blame for it, for not having us ready to go and ready to play. They outplayed us

Love it, love it, love it, love it!
:texan:

When you control the clock like that and your runningback gets 153 yards, you have outplayed them. The Colts D just got man-handled. The Colts are a smart, flashy, highly-skilled team, but they got punched in the mouth and they lost. Blame it on Ron Dayne and the Colt's offense's skill players' salaries. This is the salary cap era.

He knows his team just got out-muscled and he also knows that to not give us credit would be cruel at this point. Besides, he's a class act.

Good point about the salaries, HJam. I think the Colts are going to need to put Manning on a timeshare plan. :secret:

lol, I had a strange feeling the Texans were going to win on Sunday, anyone with a decent running game can beat the colts....go Texans!!!!

did you hear Manning's quote? He basically threw his defense under the bus. He said things to the effect of 'I can only control one side of the ball. I have no control over the defense. Our offense played well but didn't score enough points because our defense didn't show up and couldn't get us the ball back.'

obviously not an exact quote, I am paraphrasing but it actually sounded worse than that when I heard that come out of his mouth in an interview yesterday.

Yep. I have been spreading to much rep HJam will have to hit you at another time.

What is more amazing that anything is that we have reached a point this season where we are happy to call our running game decent and it is all because of Ron Dayne.. who would of thought it possible.

They've only lost 4 games this season. I'm sure there are many other teams with better running games than the Texans that have lost to the Colts.

Our Texans beat a good team, and they deserve props for it. Period. :texflag:

no doubt about it. good win against a team that had something to play for while we had little to nothing to play for.

Yeah I wasn't trying to take anything away from the Texans, because the bottom line is "they beat them", but on any given sunday the colts can lose, because of their lack of run defense.

Notice how Indy struggled primarily against their division rivals, and even the Bills? It's amazing!

I understand where you're coming from, Dream, and not trying to single you out. I've just seen the 'reason for winning' mentioned by several folks, but when you look at the teams Indy has beaten this year, they've got some great running games:

9/10 @ New York Giants 26 - 21 W - NFL rush rank: 10th
9/17 HOUSTON TEXANS 43 - 24 W -
9/24 JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS 21 - 14 W - NFL rush rank: 2nd
10/1 @ New York Jets 31 - 28 W
10/8 TENNESSEE TITANS 14 - 13 W - NFL rush rank: 5th
10/22 WASHINGTON REDSKINS 36 - 22 W - NFL rush rank: 4th
10/29 @ Denver Broncos 34 - 31 W - NFL rush rank: 6th
11/5 @ New England Patriots 27 - 20 W - NFL rush rank: 12th
11/12 BUFFALO BILLS 17 - 16 W
11/26 PHILADELPHIA EAGLES 45 - 21 W - NFL rush rank: 9th
15 12/18 CINCINNATI BENGALS 34 - 16 W

The teams I didn't rank have running games ranked near the Texans. But you can clearly see that the Colts have beat teams this year that have vastly superior running games than the Texans.

I just think the Jaguars game really opened the eyes of the league and helped teams prepare to face the Colts defense (or lack thereof)

Though we were playing for less, we were able to do what Cincinnati couldn't. I'm convinced that says a lot about our coaching staff. If you watched the Cincy vs. Indy game last week, it was obvious that Cincy wanted to run the ball on Indy. However, they didn't seem comfortable with the gameplan and were unable to execute it. Certainly, they had OLine injuries as well. But, not more than we do. I'm telling you, a good offseason and and a reasonably healthy season next year in key spots and we're challenging for the playoffs. Seriously!

yeah, the key is keeping Manning off the field, which oddly enough, requires a running game. Strange that the big weakness of the Colts defense is the one thing that prevents the team from doing what works: getting the ball in Manning's very capable hands.

I suspect that this hole will be a top priority for the Colts next off-season.

This is exactly why I thought we'd win on Sunday.....beating Indy is fools gold....this team still has a ways to go before we can actually be considered "good"

I heard this too and was stunned at first...it's like he's gone into a deep depression because he not only didn't have the chance to pad his stats (like he always does)...but he lost.

In retrospect...I don't think he was throwing his team under the bus as he just expected to beat us and that it wouldn't even be close once again. I think that he fell into the habit of expecting us to not show up like they did.

No, IMO he was throwing his D under the bus. This a pattern with Peyton (cry baby) Manning that a lot of the public has not seen. Remember last year in the playoff loss interview, he went off on his O-line even though they are one of the best in the business.

I would much prefer to see Brady or LT on the air instead of "6'5, laser arm cry baby" being the face of the NFL and hawking products.

Look, I came over here and wished you all luck and then came back to give you all props as well... so I think I have probably earned the right to put my comments in on this one.

Peyton was NOT under any circumstances throwing the Defense under the bus. You either only read part of the article or seen part of the interview. Not once in his entire statement did he say or even imply that the Defense 'couldn't get the ball back' for him, as suggested above in this thread. In addition... he went on to say that this is no time for division. He can't control any other position, other than his own. And he has to make sure he does that to the best of his ability, going on further to imply that had we scored a TD on that last drive, we might have won that game... essentially putting some of the blame on himself.

Don't go looking to pick his statements apart and if your gonna dog him out, atleast dog him out for something that is factual, instead of reaching for things that aren't.

That's pretty much the same thing we said, Kubiak said, and David Carr said when our defense couldn't force any punts (or three & outs) against Philly, Indy(the first time), and Washington....

It's not throwing anyone under the bus, it's what it is.... the Indy offense scored on most of their possesions.... our defense wasn't all that. It was good enough, since RonDayne and our OL stayed on the field.

I don't know about all that....... don't want to toot my own horn, but I said the same thing when we lost to them earlier in the year. We gave up on our running game too early, and left our defense on the field too long.

no doubt about it, they are a high powered offense, but if you can keep the ball away from them, and force one stop.... you've got a chance. Their defense has been week all year long.

Why not? It's done all the time around here about everything else.

You are right Colts Addict. No one should take his statements out of context. I think there are a lot of fans here looking for something. That said, I have to say that peyton doesn't handle adversity well and places blame in other areas, or so it seems. He has an "attitude" and he deserves one. He is the best there has ever been.

But he got beat fair and square by what I'm sure he considers one of the worst teams in the league. ( Which is a way overrated assessment) As he found out on Sunday!!!

So hey,, we beat Peyton and his Colts. And I am proud of our guys. We will revel in that win for a LONG time.

Go Texans!!!!

Peyton should blame himself for the loss. If your defense is struggling....control time of possession instead of scoring so soon. Peyton pretty much had his way with our defense.....why give our offense 2:41 to win the game?

I have to second Coltsaddict and say Peyton Manning is one of the classest players this league has ever seen. He personifies his position and IMO what every QB coming out of college should aspire to be like. He addresses the media when he wins and when he loses.
Let's think back to the two seasons back to back that the Colts lost to New England in the playoffs. In post game interviews he stood in the press room and took responsibilty for his teams failure to progress in the playoffs. BOTH TIMES.
Anyone who thinks Tom Brady is half the class act his is PLAIN WRONG.
After a Regular season loss to the Colts last year Tom made a lame duck statement and WOULD NOT field any questions, he just stood up and walked out of the press room.
I am extremely happy we finally beat the Colts, But I'll never question a thing Manning says or does. He has earned every ounce of respect he gets. And he's earned it from everyone.
If he did throw his defense under the bus, then by all means run them over.
He's done nothing but play hard to help them win. When his Defense steps up, trust me he'll be the first person to praise them.
Colts addict... Good luck to your team in the playoffs!

No disrespect but if they dont' do something to clog those holes there season may end abruptly yet again.

IMO, I am being factual. Sometimes witnesses to the same crime see different things...so, I respect your opinion of Peyton if your differs but please don't say that I am not being "factual". I am just commenting on what I have seen. How Peyton handles disappointed/frustration is not his strong suit IMO. Two observations, he was yelling at his D Sunday to get him the "xxxxing" ball back" on the sidelines, and at the play off loss post game interview last year hid did throw his OL under the bus and I was not the only one that was surprised to hear him do that.

Look, he is a great QB and you guys are lucky to have him overall, but there are some things that just rub me the wrong way and finger pointing from QB's is one of them.

We just see Peyton off the field differently I guess.

Best of luck in the playoffs.

Go Texans...beat the Browns into the ground! :marionaner:

Oh, no doubt about it. You all had a great game plan that you stuck to and literally ran the ball down our throats. Kudo's for that. You should be very proud... too many teams this year would start out running on us and we would get a couple of tackles in the backfield for a loss, then they would abandon it. You all didn't do that... and you should revel in the win.

My only comment was, if people dislike Peyton, they can surely come up with valid reasons to dog him out, instead of misrepresenting things he says to try and make a point for not liking him. There are tons of reasons floating around out there to hate on him... but saying he threw his Defense under the bus, is just simply false. Especially when he went on to say that "now is not the time for division, and I, as a QB am responsible for my position and doing it the best I possibly can. I have to score TD's and make the most of opportunities when I have them and I obviously didn't do that, because they scored more than us and we lost the game." That quote right there makes the whole argument about throwing his D under the bus, a bit ridiculous.

Anyway... Congratulations again and good luck in your upcoming game, as well as on draft day. I sincerely hope for a future rivalry with you all, as I enjoy your fanbase much better than the Titans and Jags fanbase. Who knows... maybe the Texans and the Colts will be the teams to beat in the division in the very near future.

Take care,
Deanna

Of course it's Peyton's fault. If it wasn't for his paycheck, the team could afford to keep guys on defense and maybe sign a servicable DT.

Yup, hence the term Pay-me-a-ton. Couple that with Marvin's and Reggie's pay checks and that doesn't leave much slack for the defense.

Here we go again... Peyton and Marvin both offered to restructure their contracts, but let me ask you something. Why is it Peyton's fault and not our GM managers fault?

LOL - That would be Bill Polian! :shades:

Damn. I knew that. :tease:

Good luck in the playoffs but you guys are going to run up against some teams that have better defenses than ours AND have better running games. If the Chargers or the Ravens study the tape on our game, you guys are going to get creamed.

Good luck anyway. Do the division proud. :)

Thanks for the luck... we are gonna need it in a bad way. To be honest with you, I am not concerned at all about our Offense. Our ST and Defense on the other hand...

Really at this point, as a realistic Colts fan here, all I can do is go on some blind faith a bit. Our Defense hasn't given us much hope for going far and history shows that noone has ever won a SB with the worst run Defense in the league and nearly the worst ST tackling in the league. So... with that said, I can only hope we maybe have some sort of a freak thing, like PB last year (since they made history in being the only 6 seed to ever make it) and get it done. Or... hope that our Defense has been bagging it all year long and decides to show up in the playoffs to surprise everyone. LOL (really I am not delusional, just reaching a bit here)

Thanks again for the well wishes... we will certainly try to make the South proud.

See ya next year!

Hey Deanna, thanks for the props. I'll say it again, and I say it every time I bad mouth him, Peyton is the best there is. Hands down. But he doesn't deal well with less than perfect. Or so it seems. He appears to me to be a total perfectionist. I would hate to be his wife. You would never be perfect enough. BUT, he is the best quarterback.

Funny though, so many of our Carr haters here think David should win the games all by himself. Peyton just showed that that is impossible. It is a team effort. One side of the ball craters andyou are finished. Enough said.

Hope ya'll finish strong. Next year, we will be a team to wreckon further with. Since we own the Jags already, we will work on owning the Titans next, while slowly sucking ya'll in. LOL Without "hope" there is nothing.

I believe!!!! :ok:

Here we go again... Peyton and Marvin both offered to restructure their contracts, but let me ask you something. Why is it Peyton's fault and not our GM managers fault?
Definitely the FO's fault for spending that much money on that side of the ball. Still, Peyton's getting the paychecks. As far as Marvin goes, I think his deal is a bit newer than Peyton's.

So... let me ask you something then. If your boss offers you a gigantic raise, are you going to turn it down? Is it YOUR responsibility to manage the money for the company or the company's responsibility to only pay what it can afford to pay without damaging the company's financial situation? So, yeah... he is getting the paychecks... wouldn't you?

Again... Peyton and Marvin both offered to restructure their contracts to give our Organization more money to spend on people like Edge and people on our Defense. Polian said no. (not sure how they would do that anyway, with the players union... I would imagine they would do whatever they could to stop a restructure)

There are some people here (and probably on most boards) who are ticked at some players because they're making a lot of money. Personally, I kinda wish the fans didn't know how much these guys were making because it doesn't really matter. My wife is fond of saying,"You don't get paid what you're worth, you get paid what you negotiate."

I won't ever put anyone down for getting paid a lot of money. I don't care if it's an actor in a really bad movie or a singer who makes really bad music. I definitely won't bag on an athlete getting paid. Be it Carr or Peyton or Domanick. They convinced someone that they should be paid that much and they're getting paid. Great. Doesn't matter whether or not their performance matches the size of the paycheck or whether getting that paycheck means that the team can't afford any other players. That's not their job to worry about. Hate the front office, not the player.

There are a ton of people involved in contracts, especially huge contracts like Manning's. They knew what they were getting themselves into when they offered this.

Who knew what? I am not sure I am understanding what your saying here. This whole pay discussion started, because you said to blame Manning for getting paid so much money, where the blame (if there must be some) would actually go to the FO, not Peyton. And you didn't answer my question...

Oh, Pay-me-a-ton's contract isn't in any way his fault nor what effect it has on the club. That fault lays with the duffases that put it in place. Now, he could re-do it to help the club get some dollars free to help the defense, but that he has a big contract, well...........more power to him, but a real loud BOOOOO to those that were willing to give it to him. I know, I know "But he would have walked".......OK. Let someone else put their club behind the cap eight ball. The Pats are the ones you want to watch about stars and big dollars.

You're seriously asking a 16 year old that question?

...but yeah, it was ultimately Manning who demanded the contract and negotiated, or at least Manning's people. IIRC, he makes way more money off endorsements than his contract, which would mean that taking less money from the team would make sense...but when you see him in all those dumb commercials, you gotta wonder how greedy he is.

"Cut that meat".... "Cut that meat"....... 'Nuff said.

Well, I wasn't aware you were only 16 years old, but asking you what you meant by something, isn't exactly asking a question that is over your head.

First of all, lets get the commercial thing out of the way here. Do you know what he does with all the money he makes from those commercials? Have you researched it or are you just simply going on assumption? I am guessing its the latter of the two. Every penny he makes from endorsements goes directly into the Peyback Foundation. The Peyback Foundation is set up to help less fortunate children in New Orleans, Tennessee, and Indiana. A program that has really helped the children of our community here in Indiana. (which I can attest to, living here)

As far as it being Peyton's fault that he makes so much money... I will ask you again. Is it HIS responsibility to figure the financial situation into play when negotiating his contract? Or is that the job and responsibility of the General Manager? Last I checked, no where in the job description of a QB, does it say that its his responsibility to figure how our cap money should be spent.

As far as the NE reference up above here... yeah, ask Tom Brady what taking a hometown discount got him. I believe he did it, to keep Branch, his number 1 receiver... oops!
