Say Goodbye to JT & AP, Hello....

Texian

Hall of Fame
LaRon Landry.....with today's win and a win next week it is over for the JT and AP gang. Just think how much better we are going to be defensively with LaRon roaming in the backfield...whoooo gives me goose bumps.

I'd love for them to improve their O-Line and D-Line, but I don't care who they draft or what position he plays as long as he helps the team get better.

Yes, i agree. With a win next week, Joe Thomas and AP will be but a dream!

But hey, here comes a dream that's just as good! I may be vouching for AP, but Laron Landry is just as good for us, if not better!

If we take a safety, I'd rather take Reggie Nelson.

Win, or lose, we're guaranteed a top 10 pick. I could see us taking Darrelle Revis (CB) or Leon Hall (CB) with the 1st pick. Possibly even, Marshawn Lynch (RB).

If we wont fix the O-line in the FA, we need to trade down and pick an O-lineman up.

If we go Safety I want a cover Safety, not a hitting safety. Glenn Earl and ??? with CC backing up would be nice.

So Merriweather Vs. Landry Vs. Nelson, whoever can read and cover is who I want.

Actually, as VY has shown, you don't have to be able to read to be in the NFL. Literacy isn't too important when the talent is good enough.

:hides:

Neither Sam Baker nor Jake Long are coming out. Both would have been reasonable 6-10 picks. Instead, the OTs fall off a cliff after Joe Thomas, dropping all the way to Levi Brown. Ouch - pretty much kills the idea of taking OT in the 1st without a trade down. Though Arizona won, too - so we could still get above them and maybe snag Thomas.

I really like Joe Staley (Central Michigan). Is there any chance he ends up in the 2nd? Hmm, there is now, but he'll probably work out well.

I said it ages ago and I'll say it again. Reggie Nelson will probably fit our system better. Great cover skills lay's the wood like a lumberjack and is coming on strong. Even though Landry is the more polished player I see more potential in Nelson.

i'll wait to see where we finish and who is coming out but if we do decide to go DT i would rather get glenn dorsey out of LSU. he is just as disruptive in the middle and constantly gets pressure on the QB. but after our last three 1st round picks now play on the d-line i don't think we will go that way again, but hey, the texans always suprise us on draft day.

All three are FS. Landry is the bigger hitter of the three. Merriweather is a wanttabe thug, and his body type has scouts thinking he needs to play CB in the NFL, they think he will not hold up to the pounding that safeties take.

Have not heard the same thing about him but Nelson is on the light side also.

I like Landry because he reminds me of Ronnie Lott in the games I have seen.

Anthony. Maddox. Can you say drastically lower paycheck?

our rotation is weak and i'm not sure if you've noticed but none of our DT's draw doubles which allows doubles on our ends. the kid is said to remind scouts of john henderson. he'd be great freeing up demeco ryans even more.

as much as I'd like Branch to come here too, can the Texans really go D-Line in the first round for the 4th consecutive year? i am gaining the realization that peterson won't be there for us at our supposed 7-9 pick. i'd sure like to go CB before safety with Leon Hall and then safety or BPA O-Line in the 2nd round.

we can take a pass rush DT in brandon mebane in the 4th or so. undersized high moter guy, he's fine against the run and should draw doubles away from mario. justin harrell is a guy that should be pretty good as well and might fall to the 3rd or 4th because of his ruptured bicep. should be healthy by combine time.

He'll be on our team for years, starting or rotating. Some Jags fans I know say that one of their biggest complaints about their GM is letting Maddox go to the Texans. As you've seen today, CB is by far our greatest need. You won't find many good corners in the second day.

Even if we do end up with the 7-9 pick, Peterson could still fall. As of right now, the Lions and Raiders are #1-2. The Lions have Kevin Jones and even though he got hurt at the end of this year, he was having a nice season and he's still pretty young and they have far worse problems to fix than RB, plus Peterson is not an ideal fit for the offensive system they are currently running, assuming Martz sticks around and/or they continue to run that system next year. The Raiders have LaMont Jordan and have a lot of money tied up in him and even though he's not a huge stud he's still sufficient enough and I think they also have much bigger holes to fill, especially with Calvin Johnson available and with the likely departures of Randy Moss and Jerry Porter.

Next on the current list is Tampa Bay and Cleveland. Tampa won't take him as they took Cadillac at #5 overall two years ago. Cleveland has Reuben Droughns who has been pretty productive for them and if I'm not mistaken they have a decent amount of money invested in him too and he's pretty young. While Peterson is arguably the BPA here and he would be a decent upgrade over Droughns, their defense (especially secondary) is a much bigger issue right now so they could look for a Leon Hall here.

After that, it is us, Washington, and Arizona in no particular order. Even if we draft after these two teams, Washington has Clinton Portis and Ledell Betts producing well and getting paid a whole lot and Arizona just paid a $30 million to Edgerrin James last year, so neither of them would take him.

The other 6-win teams in the league (in case we win next week vs. Cleveland which I expect us to do) are San Francisco, Minnesota, and Miami. Frank Gore just had a breakout year for the 49ers, the Vikings just paid Chester Taylor a lot of money and he's been pretty productive, and the Dolphins have Ronnie Brown.

All I'm saying is even if we end up drafting #10 after all these teams there is a pretty decent shot that Peterson could fall to us, especially if his workouts are less than what is expected of him. The main worry would be the Browns taking him or another team trading up to grab him, but at #10 we still have a good shot at Peterson, and if he's gone we can look for players like Leon Hall, LaRon Landry, or the best CB/LB/FS available.

This is just my opinion but I believe that in the off-season this organization will go out and get what they need be it in free agency or the draft. I have no doubt that if they believe they need Adrian Peterson or Joe Thomas then they'll make the moves necessary to go get them.

Granted one or both of them may not fall to where we are but if Kubiak and Smith think they have to have one of them they'll move up to do it.

Vinny, what happened to you...I remember when I first started to read the boards you and Huge were my favorite posters. Now I am having second thoughts...let me ask you a black and white question...meaning...no wavering or explaination of why, just yes or no...

do you think Carr is the answer for the Texans?

By the way I am not one that cries over Vince not being here but I am a Longhorn fan and I played in the same high school division as Vince, so I have followed him for awhile and wish him well.

We will address the safety position...in free agency or in the draft. There is no way we start next season with the safeties we have now.

second thoughts about what? I don't come here to tell you what you want to hear. If you don't like what I have to say, I don't mind (or care if you want the truth).

I don't know what to think about Carr long term but I've been an obvious critic since around 2003 if you have followed my history.....but despite being critical of his play I don't take cheap personal shots at him as Mexican Texan did to vy in the post above.

second thoughts about respecting yor views...and I don't have to agree with what your opinions are, they are just respected...but since you have cleared that up...you still my nicca

For me we can't go wrong with either Leon Hall CB, La Ron Landry S, or Paul Pusluszny OLB. Anyone of these 3 would be nice.

Good post. Mebane is one of the best sleeper DT's in the draft and is my second favorite DT period. I only like the DT from Louisville more, but he may be more of a 3-4 NT than a 4-3 DT. Mebane can get after the QB and plays with intensity.

I will be very happy if the Texans are able to draft LaRon Landry when their pick comes up at the 6, 7 or 8 spot, but, what would it take to wheel and deal for Joe Thomas?

I doubt he (Mebane) is a sleeper pick by draft time, should be a 1st day pick.

also will be interesting if Amobi Okoye is available when the Texans pick in the 2nd if they address this need over say CB, OLB or OL?

I also doubt Mebane will be a sleeper by April, but he will not be a 1st rounder, but should go first day. I like him in the 3rd. I don't know how to grade Okoye honestly. I really see him more as a NT than a DT. He is so strong and has such a low CoG that he would be a perfect NT. I haven't seen much of him breaking through the line and causing havoc in the backfield as opposed to creating holes for the LB's. I'd take Mebane over him probally at this point.

your right about Mebane you basicly know what your getting solidification of the interior line, has good pocket push, some double teams as he breaks on QB & solid tackler. however, both are suited for the 3-4 NT position, squat & powerful actually Brandon is more compact @ 6-0 300 lbs as oppossed to 6-2 317lb Amobi, who will only be 19 by time of the draft (his upside is unlimited).
