ANDERSON ON TEXANS: Domanick Davis is not the answer

By JOEL ANDERSON
AP Sports Writer

HOUSTON (AP) -- The Houston Texans ought to start fitting Cedric Benson for a jersey. Or maybe Carnell Williams. His backfield mate at Auburn, Ronnie Brown, would be nice too.

If the Texans don't like this year's upcoming draft crop, general manager Charley Casserly should call Green Bay and inquire about the price for backup running back Najeh Davenport. Should that fail, the Denver Broncos always seem to have a surplus of backs - maybe they could send Houston a good one for a fair amount.

Anyone, in short, might be a better fit at tailback for the Texans than incumbent Domanick Davis.

After another night of running to darkness instead of daylight in an excruciating loss to the Packers on Sunday, Davis provided even more proof of why the Texans should start looking elsewhere for a workhouse.

That's been my thought for the last month. We have everything else, we just need a running game. Our defense is improving, we have an awesome passing game, last Sunday even our special teams stepped it up on coverage and kickoff returns. I think part of our problem now is that teams now know we run the ball just enough to try and open up the pass game, and it worked for a game or two, but now everyone knows we have no running game. I am not saying go out and get Edge James (although I wouldn't mind it), but for the love of God we need a RB who can average more than 3 yards a carry. I said it several times and I will say it again, start Jonathan Wells!

Mike Ditka said that we are simply plugging holes in our lineup and are a terrible team at the beggining of the season. And i didnt beleive him.

I certainly am not going to beleive the ramblings of some dude named Joel Anderson.

Who is Joel? is he even a Texans fan? does he know our situation? does he know about the zone blocking? or is he like all these other talking heads that havent even quite wrapped their pea sized brains around the fact that we are the TEXANS not the Titans.

Davis is fine.. we have other needs. If our line continues to improve we will be able to better judge him next season.. if not.. well we may have to drop the zone blocking for the sake of a winning season.. but i doubt we would do that either. And we havent even given Hollings a real look yet. if he gets rid of the Injury bug we may see alot of him next year.

No.. we need defense.. not another RB. None of the RBs coming out this year are sure things... and the ONLY RB that I see us considering is Ronnie Brown.. because he probably wouldnt require a trade up.. and he is the size that you need for a workhorse type of back.

Grid, he actual is a pretty well known AP sports writer and he actually has covered the Texans a great deal over the past few years. I believe he actually has covered all of our games this season for the AP. I could be wrong, but I know he at least wrote about our game with the Jags, Packers, Colts, and Cheifs, as well as some summaries of our season so far. He has written an article about our 3-year progression called "ANDERSON ON FOOTBALL: Capers, Texans getting it right". This was on ESPN.com a few weeks ago. He's also had numerous recaps and other articles on CBSSportsline.com. I mean He even covered Dunta Robinson signing with us.

He has also written other articles about Davis' sophomore slump this season and it seems that by his writing he is slowly losing faith in Davis as a feature back, like a lot of people who have watched the games this season.

So I guess to answer your questions, No he isn't a Texans fan, he is a writer for the AP assigned our team, So he is required to know a pretty good amount about our situation.

I don't know if you thought Joel Anderson was just some random guy with his own website or something, but he is a fairly knowlegdable sports writer and I would rather read his writing than some of the **** I see on this message board.

I like DD. He runs hard and can catch the ball out of the backfield.. The problem I see (and someone can correct me if I am wrong) is that I haven't seen him make anybody miss in the open field. I will give the defensive player props for making the tackle, but you would figure ONE guy DD could make miss. All great runningbacks have a knack for making guys miss.

I wonder if this is the Billy Miller syndrome (and i like BM too). We see a guy do something that seems great (given the lack of talent on the team) but in comparing to the rest of the league, they are average. To the Texans (being we are only a little over 2 1/2 years old) fans it is the best we have seen on this team. (being Wells set the benchmark)
