What if we trade the guy we pick?

Say for some reason or the other a guy like Quinn is handled like Leinart in the draft and falls in our laps and we go ahead and draft him. Would it be wise if we turned around and said, "Okay who wants Quinn?"

Hope I won't get banned like I almost did for saying that Dom Capers was a poor choice for HC and for saying we should have drafted Clinton Portis instead of Jabar Gaffney...but here goes! If we turn around and draft Notre Dames Brady Quinn after turning up our noses at Vince Young how will it look? Will it be like admitting that we were WRONG on David Carr?

I'm not banning you from this thread but I do ask that you refrain from turning it into a David Carr/Vince Young thread.

I am going to answer your question though because it kind of plays into why you draft Brady Quinn anyhow.

My suggestion is that if Brady Quinn falls in our lap that would mean Joe Thomas and Adrian Peterson are gone. With Brady Quinn, we can become players in this draft.

You turn around and see what you can get for him. If it turns into two picks in the first or two other first day picks and a lineman or something go for it.

If you get nothing for him, you got your QB to groom and who cares if it looks like we were wrong. We already look like we were wrong but at least we are showing we are doing our best to correct what we do.

Share with us! Who in the NFL would need Brady Quinn more than we do? The point being....if we happened to get Brady Quinn we had better keep him and play him! And in that same vain. Why draft the Oklahoma RB after passing on Reggie Bush? Makes the same statement as did my point on the QB's.

I can think of a very good reason to draft Peterson over Reggie Bush. One being that he can be an every down back. Two being that since everyone is down for the hometown guy, Palestine Texas is not far from Houston. Three, he too can catch out of the backfield and take it the distance. Also in the draft order that we will probably be able to get him, he isn't going to demand all of heaven and earht like Bush would've and there isn't any dirty laundry coming with him.

Chicago could possibly be looking for a QB, The Jets, maybe Miami. It doesn't have to be a QB though, it can be whoever is the big name at the time of the draft.

Not a bad idea but I think a team would be more willing to trade for our pick when it's our turn, then after the fact. You might not be able to trade Quinn untill you sign him and a team may be unhappy with the contract, and you might take a big hit.

What happened there with Phillip Rivers and Eli Manning? I know eli was picked #1 by the chargers but when did the trade go through? Is this sort of like what your suggesting we do?

I think if we would be able to turn around and trade him, we probably would do the trade before the pick was ever made (like Denver did last year for Cutler).

The trade went through almost immediately after Manning was picked by the Chargers and yes that is exactly what I am suggesting. Look at what they got out of it. Rivers and Merriman.

I don't see the Texans drafting a qb with their no.1 pick this year. The qb class is no where as good (potentially great) as it was last year. Brady Quinn is the top qb but there are real question about him. He has played behind a shaky o-line most of his career and we don't know how adversly it's affected him. He's a good player but compared to last year's class I don't know how good he is. I see the Texans picking up a qb later in the draft and grooming him for a year or two.

Oakland, Detroit, Chicago, and Miami to name a few...

But let me add this, we need Adrian Peterson more than a gamble that someone would want to trade the farm for Quinn..

Sounds like a perfect fit for the texans! jk

I can agree with that. Adrian Peterson is my first choice. I guess I am just preparing for some crazy thing to go down.

If AP and Thomas are gone we try to trade the pick as imo no one else in top 10 picks are a turn around type player. We need an impact made with this selection even if it is a trade.

I think we would try to trade down and get either LaRon Landry or Marshawn Lynch with a mid round first pick.

I still think the biggest wild card in the draft is going to be Jamarcus Russell. The Sugar Bowl is going to be very interesting because with Notre Dame's weak defense and LSU's strong defense coupled with the game being played in New Orleans, there is a more than reasonable chance that he will out play the consensus number 1 pick just like last year with Vince v. Leinart / Bush.

Does anyone think Lynch or Landry will be an impact player such as Peterson or Thomas would be if available? I'm just saying a 4th pick is very valuable and last draft doesn't make me drool over trade down scenario.

While I agree to a point, Landry could be just as valuable because of how weak our secondary is and I wouldn't sell Lynch short, the guy is very talented and easily could turn out to be better than Peterson.

Because Peterson is an everydown back that can run between the tackles and bring the pain, that was L Whites job at USC not Bush's job. Peterson has both power and speed thats one of the reasons he is listed #1 by many as the highest ranked underclassman. Bush quick and explosive but even with some holes to run through in the NO he has a terrible average as a RB. He needs space, I am a Bush fan but that was the knock on him even before the draft. Ask any VY fan they pointed it out everytime we asked for Bush to be drafted.

If we pick up a cb like Clemmons in F/A and a DT and LB in draft, our secondary will not be weak. I support my position as Kubes didn't draft a safety. He thought Pbuc would work out and Earl and CC Brown would hold down the middle. If the corner had worked and with Ryans, Williams and Weaver he would have been right. Most of us thought that Babin/ Peek would upset the QB more than happened. Carr is not the only one that did not hold up his load and I think we will discover that once he is no longer the target of fan wrath, deserved or not.

I agree, ideally the secondary will be updated via F/A. But I still think that Lynch is not much of a step down (if any) from Peterson.

Or we could do what i do in Madden. Sign all the big free agents and then trade them to teams for their 1st rounder the following year.
One draft I got:
Joe Thomas
Adrian Peterson
Calvin Johnson
Patrick Willis
Daymeion Hughes
LaRon Landry

all with first rounders...

And your cap dollars were....1 or 2 billion?
