How would you fix it?

I hear a lot of people talking about all the things wrong with the Texans...I am just curious to how you would fix all the Texan problems?

Hears my :twocents:

Free Agency
In free agency I would love the texans to pickup a veteran defensive tackle to play alongside with Travis Johnson. I think that is a pretty glaring problem with our defense right now, is our interior line. I would love to see us get Terdell Sands, he is a backup on oakland, playing behind two veteran greats, but he has big size (6'7 340) and in college I remember him being a force out of chatanooga. That would apply more pressure on the inside that way teams can't afford doubling mario. If you watch the games Mario is getting doubled 60% of the time, and when he isn't doubled, they run away from him. Opposing NFL offenses treat Mario as an already dominant end, they gameplan for him, already, and that why he doens't seem to be as effective as people hoped.

Also in free agencty I would love to see the texans pickup Asante Samuel out of New England or Michael Lewis out of philadephia to play alongside Glenn Earl. We have a missing piece back there... and I think a quickfix out of free agency is the answer.

Another guy I'd love to see the Texans pursue to provide veteran leadership, and it would be highly likely considering his old head coach is on our staff, is running back Ahman Green. Texans kind of need a Running back by commitee deal because each of our running backs have weaknesses. Davis falls to injuries, Dayne doesn't have great speed, Lundy is young an inexperienced, and Ahman Green cannot carry the load. If we used Dayne in short yardage situations, and then rotated Davis/Green, I think that would really boost our running game, plus Green is a great receiving threat out of the backfield. Lundy in my opinion, still needs some time to grow.

Matt Starks out of Pitt and Leonard Davis out of Arizona, if they become available, do everything in your power to pick them up kubes... but that is a major if...i see both resigning with their respective teams.

Cato June, Lance Briggs, Diggs, Thomas, or Fletcher, to help out our trio along with demeco. Texans... you can land one of them...and any of the 5 would be awesome. Love to see Lance Briggs out of all of them...knows how to play the 4-3 well and he has been part of a very dominant defense.

The Draft
1st Round: Joe Thomas (if he is available). If not Levi Jones Penn State.
2nd Round: Offensive Guard. Do not reach for talent however, only if the talent is there, which usually it is, Guards dont usually go until late 1st round early 2nd. Adding one more player to the fight for a spot at guard would surely help.
3rd Round: Corner. Have someone challenge Faggins for that 2nd corner spot...competition brings the best out of any player. Plus at worse we have a solid nickel back.
4th Round: Tom Zbikowski out of Notre Dame. Could be a real threat at punt returner and could come in if needed to play safety, and boy does he lay the wood in that defensive backfield. Also finds the ball well and he would become a leader and give our defense some attitude.
5th Round: An Outside Linebacker. Add some depth and competition to the outside spot.
6th Round: Punter. lol....I dont think i need to explain...
7th Round: Center, another practice squad player... let him develop and maybe he can fight for a position in the future.

So say all this went down... this is how my 2007 Texans Would look. (DP is Draft Pick)

HB: Davis/Green/Dayne
FB: Cook
WR: Johnson/Moulds/Mathis/Walter
TE: Daniels
Left Tackle: Joe Thomas/FAaquisition
Left Guard: Chester Pitts
Center: Flanagan
Right Guard: McKinney/Weary/DP
Right Tackle: Spencer/Winston (winston starts out...and when spencer feels ready give him a shot, if both are successful I think either of these 2 could battle out in that right guard spot.

DE: Mario Williams
DT: Travis Johnson
DT: Terdell Sands
DE: Anthony Weaver
OLB: Briggs/June/one of the other 5 FAs
MLB: Demeco Ryans
OLB: Wong/Greenwood/DP
FS: Lewis or Samuel/Zbikowski(DP)
SS: Earl/Zbikowski(DP)
CB: D-Rob
CB: Faggins/DP

And last but not least a lot of you are wondering, what about quarterback?

I don't think we need to draft a young quarterback, at least not yet. Carr is an athlete... top 5 athletic quarterback in the nfl. I'd put Vick, Young, then Carr (Mcnabb and Culpepper are hurt). You need an atheletic QB in the west coast offense. Powerful arm... top 5 in the nfl considering arm strength. He is tough. No question. + He has something to prove. If we had this team assemebled their arent any excuses. Your defense can get it done, You have a talented offensive line, you have good receivers, and you have a consistent rushing attack. You have a scheme youve had to learn for a year already. You have good coach.

The only think I might do if I were the Texans at the qb spot, is bring in Jake Plummer for a QB Controversy. We don't need to baby Carr, but I dont think we need to let him go either. This kid can play when he has support. If he is given time he will find the receiver down field, and if not, he will make a play with his legs.

Behind this offensive line the past 5 years, I think John Elway in his prime would of had trouble. You cannot be successful with a crappy running game and a crappy offensive line...thats the quarterbacks two best friends.

good blog, man I would love to have that saftey from ND but I heard he is going to take the boxing route. The man can lay some hits and he is a proven leader. well put

First off, I would draft A.Peterson (OU) if he is there when we pick. That should be are number one priority.
Second, I would draft a DB
Third, I would get an offensive linemen

Then hit the free agent market and pick up some big name players.

I think we need a rb as well but im just concerned about peterson and all his injuries. The only season he acually finished in college was his freshman year. he is a great player but I just think davis will be back next yr and he will have to put up some big numbers or he will be gone.

We need to address the Oline in the 1st round that tackle from wisconsin he is amazing.

Davis is a top 10 back in the nfl when healthy, and i said by adding green thatd help out and plus we have dayne who is doing very well in this scheme... I wouldn't wanna pass up Joe Thomas for a running back

There are just so many things we have to address and change I just hope they have another great draft and a even offseason getting key free agents.

I think we need to accept the fact that Davis might never come back. I hear alot of people say Peterson is injury prone, but I'm not buying it. The guy had an ankle injury and collarbone injury. Ankle injuries are common for running backs at all levels and it's not nearly as bad as a knee injury. The collarbone injury was a freak injury when he dived into the endzone. Look at Mcgahee and Gore, both had knee injuries and both fell in the draft because of this. Now tell me you wouldn't want either as our RB.

Peterson is the ideal between the tackles runner.......and the guy is good. I'd love it if our RBs next year were Peterson, DD, Dayne, and Lundy. But then again, DD may never be back and we have to prepare for this.

yeah good point about davis never coming back...but its not like we have some awesome offensive linemen waiting to come back... weve never had one in the first place. I'd rather take the chance with Davis, and pickup a franchise Left Tackle (who we have never had) then take peterson and still have a crappy to decent offensive line.

We had one franchise left tackle named Boselli, he just never turned out to be who we thought we would be. Damn injuries.

As for our Oline....they're not horrible run blocking, just horrible in pass blocking. Add a good RB that can break one off and a new QB who can actually burn a defense every once in awhile, and the Oline won't be looking so bad.

I'm glad Winston is getting reps this year because he'll be better than last year because of this. We had a freak injury with Spencer, but I'm hoping he'll be back to anchor the line. One quality FA and a draft pick would do wonders to the line.

This is actually the first year that Adrian hasn't finished. He finished last year.

Keep Cook at FB? I'll much rather stick with Vonta Leach, I really like what he's doing right now :)

Solid, under the radar type pickups like these make for good additions.

Also in free agencty I would love to see the texans pickup Asante Samuel out of New England or Michael Lewis out of philadephia to play alongside Glenn Earl. We have a missing piece back there... and I think a quickfix out of free agency is the answer.

I really would like to see Lewis and perhaps a Kenny Macklin come to town. Lewis is from Houston, and being he's had a down year, might come on the cheap (or cheaper than to be expected). I still think he's got a lot of gas left in the tank, just needs a change of scenery.

Another guy I'd love to see the Texans pursue to provide veteran leadership, and it would be highly likely considering his old head coach is on our staff, is running back Ahman Green. Texans kind of need a Running back by commitee deal because each of our running backs have weaknesses. Lundy in my opinion, still needs some time to grow.

Green's best days are behind him. I'd rather stick with what they have now than go with Green. Also, as another poster pointed out, there's a good chance we've seen the last of Domanick Davis.

Matt Starks out of Pitt and Leonard Davis out of Arizona, if they become available, do everything in your power to pick them up kubes... but that is a major if...i see both resigning with their respective teams.

Starks will re-sign with Pittsburgh, but Davis is a goner in Arizona. The team made that fact crystal clear when they re-signed Gerald Hayes, but never once extended a contract extension offer to Davis.

As for him, his problem is 50 percent mental, 50 percent position. I think he's much better suited for the guard position for starters, and secondly he desperately needs to cut down on some of the foolish false start penalties. Otherwise, he's a worthwhile pickup.

Preferrably Briggs or June. Fletcher's good, but he's getting up there in the years.

At this point i dont even care how to fix it, this season is another f---ed up season anyway. I love the Texans so much, and I have become so broken hearted, I feel like I do when I get dissapointed in one of my kids.

Davis is a top 10 back in the nfl when healthy, and i said by adding green thatd help out and plus we have dayne who is doing very well in this scheme... I wouldn't wanna pass up Joe Thomas for a running back

You will never see Davis on the field in a regular season game for the Texans again! Read between the lines, doctors told him his knee would always hurt if he plays, and he says he wont play if it hurts!

Thanks for the memories DD!

I am more entertained by the title of the thread...

HOW WOULD YOU FIX IT?

Wasn't it a few short months ago that a lot of people (we'll call it a majority - 51%) thought that this was a compete rebuilding process? ...That turning the organization around was a multi-year process, especially since our new GM hasn't had his own off season yet?

Shouldn't this be something that we continue to look at as HOW DO WE CONTINUE TO DEVELOP THIS TEAM?

I know it is somewhat nit-picky of a subject to approach, but it is as if the fan base is looking at this as a catastrophe. This team is pretty much decimated by injuries... more so than other teams, and with our depth, we can't afford that.

Let's keep our eye on the prize and continue to build, not fix.

Keep Cook at FB? I'll much rather stick with Vonta Leach, I really like what he's doing right now :)

Leach was playing better than Cook in preseason. Leach was rumbling. I feel like the coaches are looking over their shoulders wondering if pinch penny micro manager head cook and bottle washer will fire them for making a bad decision. Based on his do or die attitude about Carr one could see where this concern would come from. You make a decision at Texans land, you live with it. Forever.

yeah thread title wasn't good... It is more of building onto what we have... I think our core of young players is good. I think we need to add some key veterans however, outside of flanagan and moulds...we have 0 veteran leadership. Thats why I think this offseason in free agency is just as important as the draft. We need to use the draft to help out our o line. Free agency to fill various holes with VETERANS. We have enough projects... young players etc... veterans will help out this team. Especially on the defensive side of the ball.

If I were in charge I would fire everybody, trade all my draft picks for 7th rounders and draft a full team of all-pros. Then bring in the best free agents for next to nothing.

But your plan isn't too bad.

Kinda sad that no one really ever mentions Dunta Robinson as a leader. That guy talent wise has been around a while and should be as responsible for stepping up on defense as any other guy like Carr. plus he has been getting burned more this year, a disappointment on the year for sure.... although I do understand the lack of pressure by the DL will make the job harder on the secondary in coverage. Just wish that he was someone that seemed to be a step up leader.

Step #1....get as many of these FA's as possible and in this order IMO:

Focus FA help on the defense and go offense early in the draft by...

Upgrade starting CB position for years to come with Samuel from NE. He is 25 yrs old, no injuries, and would challenge Drob frankly to raise his game (which I think he can do) or he will be the guy QB's go at. Move Faggins to nickel and give him a shot at the FS spot in camp.

Compliment and exploit DeMeco by adding OLB Briggs from Chicago who is only 25 and if combined with Ryans would give us two of the best LB's in the business. Thomas from the Ravens would be a good second choice move IMO.

Get your feature back here instead of the draft by picking up Turner from San Diego. 24 yrs old, fast, runs heavy at 237lbs and even can return kicks for us if we want...and schooled by LT himself for crying out loud! And, the best part of this move may be is that it let's you go OL early on day one instead of taking Peterson.

And, the final FA...Safety Hamlin from Seattle.

Step #2 I would love something like this as a draft class to go our from '06

1st round... Pick Thomas because can play either RT or LT position... perfect given the question about Spencer. Winston backs them up another year or takes RT if Spencer can't go. If he is not there when we pick, we should take Peterson if we missed on Michael Turner. If Thomas is not there but we did get Turner then I would be happy with either FS LaRon Landry or DT Branch.

2nd round... Pick Jake Long OT if we missed on Thomas. If we got Thomas but missed FA Samuel, then we need the best available CB with this pick...Cason from Arizona perhaps. If we get lucky and got both Thomas with the first pick and Samuel in FA then go DT Okoye with this pick.

3rd round... Take Satele who should be able to play either G or C at a high NFL level. Take C Mozes if Satele is gone by our third pick.

Day two look for ....

OLB Black from New Mexico or Bradley from Nebraska
S Stone from Maine
DE/LB Obomese from Utep
And for the sake of all that is holy...how about a new punter? I suggest we look for Sepulveda from Baylor on Day 2.

Go Texans! :marionaner:

absolutely no Oline in the first.

If we get NateClements or an equivalent. in FA, then we go after AD........

PRO BOWL ROSTER REPORT
Anyone wondering what all the fuss about the NFL draft is only has to take a look at players named to this year's Pro Bowl teams. Granted, the Pro Bowl voting isn't 100% science with players reputations sometimes counting as much, if not more, that actual on-field production. Still, the Pro Bowl is a reasonably accurate barometer of who the best players in the league are at this time. And what that barometer tells us is that just about all the top players in the league were indeed drafted and that most came to their teams as premium picks.

In fact, a full 92% of all positional players selected to this year's Pro Bowl teams, were drafted. Overall, 70 of the 76 players named to the Pro Bowl this year at regular positions were drafted. In fact, over half of this year's AFC and NFC Pro Bowl positional players - 40 of 76 or 53% - were first round picks and 83% of all positional players named to this year's Pro Bowl, were first day picks selected in the first three rounds.

And this year's Pro Bowl roster was remarkably similar to last year's when the same number of former undrafted free agents were named to either the AFC or NFC Pro Bowl teams. Indeed, the number of undrafted free agents going to this year's Pro Bowl is around totals earlier in the decade. In 2001, for example, 7 undrafted position players made the Pro Bowl that year. Also note, for the second straight year, that all of this year's undrafted Pro Bowlers play offense, while every defensive player selected was drafted coming out of college. In fact, 31 of this year's 34 Pro Bowl defensive players (91%) were selected on the first day of the draft with more than half (19) being taken on the first round.

And if recent Pro Bowl teams are any indication, teams looking for a quality OT in the near future shouldn't wait much past the first round to grab one. This year, for example, all 6 Pro Bowl OTs were first round selections, a trend that has persisted in recent years. On the other hand, OG and C look more like the lunch-bucket type positions they are with just 3 Pro Bowlers coming to the league as first-round picks.

Three other positions including DT, CB and OLB each had 4 of 6 Pro Bowl position players who were former opening round selections. In contrast, only two of 6 Pro Bowlers at DE were first-round selections, while half of the QBs, RBs, WRs and safeties going to the Pro Bowl this year are former first-round picks.

As has often been the case in recent years, the QB lineup headed to the Pro Bowl is something of a mixed bag. Three of this year's 6 Pro Bowl QBs, for example, are former 1st round picks (Peyton Manning of Indianapolis, Carson Palmer of Cincinnati and Philip Rivers of San Diego), while a 4th (Drew Brees of New Orleans) is a second rounder. The other two Pro Bowl QBs this year, though, include a 6th rounders - Marc Bulger of St. Louis - and former undrafted free agent Dallas QB Tony Romo. Ironically, all three first round QBs represent the AFC.

Some pretty good ideas, but the cap hit for the FAs and then the draft picks to get Turner (he's an RFA and would most like be at the 1st & 3rd pick level), make it real hard to accomplish.

I hope Dunta doesn't start asking for a trade, because he seems the most frustrated...I guess we can't blame him...The guys soo talented i hope next year we start having a winning season so the rest of the world can see what we do....

I think we need to get better on one side of the ball and I think the defense can get better the quickest. (Ravens SuperBowl Defense A++++, Offense C- at best) With a good defense our offense will be on the field more and maybe with more reps they will get better(I know fairy tales can come true even for the Texans)

Good point. I would rather us have a dominant D than have a good offense and just go and have shootouts week in and week out. I think the start of a good defense is the defensive line... Weaver and Williams are perfect on the ends... we need another big interior linemen to create piles and cause make some noise from the inside. In the next level we need two outside linebackers to play alongside Demeco. One of those linebackers I think is already in the organization, we just have to find out who wants it. In the secondary we NEED a safety. After that we need another corner to complement D-Rob.

We are 4 players away from a dominant defense in my opinion.

Winner!!!! Pay the man Ma!

Then hit the free agent market and pick up some big name players.

I agree, fix the offense first, then play around with the D some more. Tired of all of the 1st round picks going for D players and nothing to show for it...

Said it at the very beginning and will say it again, Offense sells tickets and we need it badly...

So when do you want to address the o line? I think next year being our 6th year it should be about time.

In 2002, we drafted Chester Pitts, and Fred Weary......

In 2003, we drafted we drafte Seth Wand....

In 2005, we drafted Drew Hogdon........

In 2006, we drafted Charles Spencer, & Eric Winston.....

4 out of 5 years, we drafted an offensive lineman or two. During that time, we've also brought several FA OL.........

Dan Reeves looked at this talent.. he said the talent on this team(including the Offensive Linemen) is good enough to win.

Gary Kubiak looked at the the talent on this team......... and said the same thing. he had no problem making moves on the Offensive line... cutting players, signing fAs..... but he kept Hogdon, Weary, Pitts, Weigart........

Maybe the moves weren't as solid as they should've been..... but our offensive linemen have been drafted in about the same areas as the San Diego Chargers have been drafting linemen.

the only different between their drafts & ours, is that they've drafted 3 QBs in the last 7 years....

I am leaning towards AP if is there when we pick. But I am holding out to see what how he looks in the bowl game.

here is how i would fix it:

offseason key signings:
-RB Micheal Turner...he is gonna expect big money to stay in san diego behind LT and we need a back who can help carry the load.
-DB Asante Samuel...New England philosophy is sign them cheap and replace them even cheaper

There are two ways teams rebuild...free agaency with old farts who become cap burdens or through the draft. Free agency has landed us robaire smith, todd wade, mark bruener, and other dead money weight. Lets try the draft for once....maybe?

Draft: since we are going to end up with five wins and be around the 6-7th pick overall we have a choice in front of us. Last years draft was so full of talent ready players that alot of third and fourth rounders being key peices. here the break down...
1st rnd: trade down to about the mid teens with that trade we will end up with eithier extra 3rd and 4th rounders so with the 15th pick or so...DT Quinton Pitcock Ohio State
2nd rnd:LT Arron Sears Tennessee
3rd rnd:C Kyle Young Fresno State
3rd rnd:OLB Ed Miles Iowa
4th rnd:DB Dony Baker San Diego State
4th rnd:S Roderick Rogers Wisconsin
5th rnd:K Andrew Wellock Eastern Michigan
6th rnd:G Donald Madlock Tulane
7th rnd:DT Steven Harris Florida

that would put our depth chart at...

offense:
QB Carr, Rosenfels
RB Turner, Davis, Lundy
FB Gado, Cook
WR Johnson, Moulds, Armstrong, Mathis, Walter
TE Daniels, Putzier
LT Sears, Spencer
LG Pitts, Madlock

i am saying this would completely solve our problems, it would help us into the right direction.

To much focus on Carr and disenchantment by the fans for Carr to continue in Houston. I think you are right, but Kubiak has created a big problem and there is no way they can keep Carr. Futhermore, in the presser after last week's game Carr looked like I have never seen him. The coach has lost his star pupil. I see no possible way of Carr remaining a Texan. They set him up for failure this year and they accomplished their goal. Don't think it was what they really planned for, but they did a good job of it.

I don't think that's necessarily true.... he's had plenty of opportunity to make plays, more often than not, he's come up a hair short.

Understand, nobody expected him to play lights out this year.... for all we know, he's just supposed to show that he is competent.... for the most part, I think he has. he's not very good, he's got things to work on..... but he's competent.

What has hurt him, is that since the NYG, teams have been playing the short ball, and ignoring(practically) any deep threat whatsoever..... most notably, the NYJ(doubling the TE on 3rd down)..

Since the first Tennessee game, He appears to be more decisive........ but in doing so, he's started staring his first reads down, then dumping it. It is very difficult for a QB to be successful in the NFL by staring down your reciever, then dumping it, and it's been getting easier & easier to defend it..... & the teams have been getting better & better....... Tenn, NYG, Jax, Buff, NYJ, Oak(defense), Pats, Indy..

He played much better in 2002, there is no doubt in my mind, that his regression has been because of the beating he's taken. While many believe David will not be with this team in the future, I can't believe we'd cut him, or trade him without first demonstrating that we have a solid OL. I believe we can only do that, with him on the sideline. We'll be the only team paying our backup $8 million, but c'est la vis.... that's the bed we've made for ourselves.

Here's a thought: SI's Jeffri Chahidha, in an article that also contains a glowing review of Demeco Ryans talked about the success of Marcus McNeill in San Diego and, hence, the possible exit of Roman Oben. At 305, this guy could be light enough to be a good fit here. He has had injuries, but since when has that stopped the Texans from signing a lineman? The biggest question would seem to be whether or not he can play in the Denver system.

Along these lines, I expect a veteran starting tackle to play in Houston next year and compete with Spencer for the starting spot.

Round 1: The Texans keep their spot and take the best safety available.
Round 2: OLB
Round 3: Center

I don't think the Texans are going to nix their backs. Dayne and Lundy have shown improvement, and like David Carr, I can't stop thinking that their woes (and lack of production) is squarely at the fault of the o-line.

The Texans could, however, also be looking at the Jets, whose major acquisitions this year were a Tackle and a Center in the first round. These are exactly the positions that the Texans need upgrading the most. Would it be impossible for the Texans to trade away somehow into a second first-round spot? Then take Joe Thomas and the best center available? Just food for thought...

All in all, I expect 5-10 new faces in the Texans starting lineup next year.

Good point... however we have never used that first round pick on a franchise tackle. Every team has one, and almost all of them come in the first round...it's time for us to pick up ours.

You look at every superbowl team, there are two constants, a big time offensive line let by a good franchise tackle, and a good defensive end/pass rusher. We got one already... we need the other.

Offensive line bleeds through the rest of the team, if you have a good offensive line you have time to throw to move the ball down the field and you can run the ball to eat up the clock. If your offense can move the ball well then your defense stays off the field.

Everything starts with your offensive line... we need to make it a priority. And I still think we owe carr a fair chance behind an offensive line...because when he's been given time, he has done very well. Look at the begining of the season if you don't believe me while Spencer was starting. He was leading the nfl in QB rating.

I don't think Spencer was much better than Salaam. Carr at the time was sending the ball out that half-step faster. Unfortunately, that half-step got faster over the season as teams realized how horrible the tackle play was, and so Carr started getting pressured a lot more.

Also, a big problem the Texans have had since their inception is playing to the team's current record. My for instances are the Bills in 2005 and the Redskins in 2006. In both cases, the Texans played very weak against these teams, which were considered play-off material at the time, but the teams were never really that good. Both teams ended up being bottom-dwellers in their division. The Texans just played these teams as if they were the better team, not the Texans. This is something I look to Coach K to fix. It is an attitude adjustmen, but one that needs to be fixed.

Some pretty good ideas, but the cap hit for the FAs and then the draft picks to get Turner (he's an RFA and would most like be at the 1st & 3rd pick level), make it real hard to accomplish.

You are absolutely correct...somehow I missed that Turner was not a UFA. Thanks for the info, I will stop hoping to see #33 in battle red.

If we have enough cap space to get Samuel (top priority IMO) and Briggs, the defense will take another big step forward...and then with another smart draft we could be a whole lot better next year (sort of like the saints did this year).

Go Texans! :aikido:
