Draft or Free Agency?

If Carr is gone, and that is a big if, we should get a vet through free agency. There just isn't anyone this year coming out that is that fantastic. IMO

JaMarcus Russell and Brian Brohm although neither has declared for the draft yet. IMO they are both fantastic.

carr has been given sufficient time.. i dont want to consider him a bust, but well, he hasn;t taken the team to winning records, and this season, the oline has had injuries..... i would like to see someone else at qb.. how bout houston picks up my bucs and soon-to-be FA chris simms?

But could we really get that lucky? I think we need to focus on a veteran myself, and pick up a solid RB in the draft. Just my two cents.

maybe. we dont necessarily need ot get a big name rookie qb, and let kubiak do what he was brought here to do. turn an average qb into a pro bowler. what abt stanton? what round is he projected in?

Second.

He's inconsistent as hell and handles pressure worse than Carr.

When it comes to the topic at hand, projecting who's available on both sides, there's some respectable QBs in the draft, with Brohm and Russell both expected to declare. You add Quinn and Smith to that mix, and you've got four guys who are first round talent.

Looking at who's available in the QB class of free agents/trade possibilities, you've got Leftwich (who can't seem to remain healthy to save his life) and Schaub (Atlanta's asking for a first rounder for him).

I say draft a QB, see what Arizona wants for Kurt Warner (the asking price shouldn't be anything higher than a 6th) and go that route.

Draft. Wanna stay at the bottom of the division, send picks to another club for the QB vet. fix the lines....pick up a prospect for qB, bring in a free free agent QB. That's the frst rung on the ladder to the SB. We havn't done it in five years.
Five years of poor tallent desidsions have finally come home to roost.

warners to old and brittle and will probably get injured with the amount of hits he'll suffer here, we need someone mobile and strong enough to take one from the likes of freeney, mathis and co. maybe someone like simms or huard.

I'm not really all that sold on Huard to be honest. He's never really shown me ability to start for extended periods of time, and is better suited to be a backup.

Agreed. A veteran now would fill the bill. There are too many other positions the team needs to target in the draft.

I would like to point out now, and I have yet to see the suggestion, there is a senior QB coming out of UTEP this year named Jordan Palmer.
6' 5", 235 lbs. Oh yeah, his brother plays a little pro football too.
I know that doesn't mean a thing, but this guy would certainly be worth taking a look at. :twocents:

Carr isn't going anywhere.
I used to think that too. But now I think he really needs to move on. He is a great guy, but he isn't playing smart ball when he does get the so-so protection that our line provides.
The quote that David will be here next year is probably just to qwell having to deal with media inquiries. I doubt it is true, unless the front office are morons. Oh, wait...

I want him out of here as well, but what we all want isn't going to happen. He'll be here next year.

Personally, I think Carr is a middle-of-the-road QB on a bad team. He can easily be as good as Trent Dilfer or Brad Johnson the years they won Super Bowls. Carr already puts up similar stats to those. He just has to be surrounded by a good team.

This isn't a good team. The O-line is atrocious and everything trickles down from that. So what we need is a QB that can come to a bad team, take games on his own shoulders, and win.

So does every other team in the NFL.

Good QBs don't grow on trees and teams are frequently forced to rely on less than optimal QBs. It's my opinion that we need an upgrade at QB, but we're not just going to find one as easily as people seem to think. So we should draft one, let him sit a year to learn Kubiak's offense, and let Carr take his beating next year while the line develops with Spencer, Winston, maybe Hodgdon, and whatever other young, talented O-linemen the team can bring in.

This post is written while ignoring the lack of a drafted QB last year. Forget VY, Cutler, and Leinart .... if they were committed to DC, they should still have tried to draft Croyle, Tarvaris Jackson, or similar in the later rounds. Teams always need QBs and developing one from the later rounds is a lot cheaper than paying top dollar for a 1st-rounder and expecting him to produce right away.

JMO, of course.

I agree with many about needing both a vet QB and a Rookie. I like JaMarcus Russel and Troy Smith both, haven't really watched many of the other too much. I'm not sure what to think of Kolb, I see a lot of people in here suggesting him, but seeing other past UofH talent go nowhere in the NFL, Im leary.

They have a lot of holes to fill, would be nice to get a solid RB early in the draft, pick up a vet QB in FA like Jeff Garcia or maybe even Plummer, or keep Sage here, and then pick up a rook QB in the 3rd or 4th round. Fill in the holes between. Although I know the 1st round of the draft is leaning heavily to the defensive side of the ball.

I just for one hope that Kubes has learned from one mistake this year and decides to keep 3 QB's on the roster next year. Could have been beneficial.

we can pick up a QB in any round other than first and hopefully kubiak can groom him. wanst brady drafted in the 6th, now look where he is.

Keep Sage

Sign another vet to compete with Sage for the starters job, the loser will be second string (I would like John Kitna myself is available, get him out of the gimmic Detroit system).

Draft a rookie in the second, of those 5 mentioned (Quinn, Russell, Stanton, Brohm, Smith) take the best of which ever one is there. I bet Quinn, Brohn and Russell are gone, I would take Troy Smith. he drops because of a lot of questions about how his abilities with trancende (sp) to the NFL. To me he is a winner, a VY (not a VY supporter) type that just has that winning attitude. And Kubes likes a mobile QB.

Drafting a QB and signing a vet is expensive, and a major overhaul. And it has risk (Titans fans think that if VY had played the entire season, their team would be in the front of the wildcard race.) I suspect the front office/coaches feel that with a team without injuries, they could do add some W's next year. Overhauling the QB will not be a priority. "This is like his rookie year all over again," they will say. "Next year, with a better line and a team that has been through hell together - then we'll know if he's a keeper..."

I see Carr being here next year as well because of the cap implications alone. Maybe he's starting maybe he's not. Someone mentioned garcia would be a fa...would philly not sign him back? He's doing pretty well stepping him so hopefully he could do well here, i dont know. Jake plummer another possibility a lot of people like. I am just very skeptical that he got benched for a rookie (cutler is very good) in the middle of a playoff hunt.

I really want kubiak to pick up a qb and groom him for however long into something great. People are saying jamarcus russell is very smart..but inconsistent. I could see kubiak doing this but i dont know that i would spend a 1st rounder on him. (instead of Joe Thomas, AP, or a number of great defensive players.)

Troy smith is becoming popular..maybe if he's there in the 2nd round but i'm sure oak, clev. would pick him up if he's there.

I don't see carr or bringing in a FA as our long term answer..just a guy to "lead" untill kubiak's qb comes up.

On another note. Take patrick willis instead of Poszlusny (if we trade down). He's played olb a lot but this year is at mlb. he's incredible and good enough to play either position, kind of like demeco. better than poz imo.

skip QB for 07 as no draft QB right for team. No F/A worth picks or much better prospect than Carr. Even if DC traded, we still pay up bonus money. I think he is here 07 but J McCLain has said he will be traded. I get either Thomas or if gone Peterson and work a trade with Oakland for their 2008 first round and go for Colt McCoy. Most think Smith and Jamarcus do not better our team as too much potential not enough ready to go skills.

Do you seriously think Colt Mcoy is Better than Troy Smith :pigfly:
i feel that if troy smith falls into our hands we should get him

I think Colt McCoy Will go the way of Major Applewhite...but not the field general that Applewhite was. He'll step in havea great Freshman year breaksome records but hopefully won't give way to a perenial big game no show like...Chris Simms.

I heard Brantly(sp) has verbally comitted to UT. Isn't there also another pretty talented kid that was redshirted this year Behind Colt?

Unless Troy Smith hasa VY-esqe championship game i see his height beinga big reason for him falling to the second round. I think that's something you can work with Brees has no problem. It's a matter of lines creating proper throwing lanes and the QB understanding them....I think Troy has everything it takes to succeed and if he's there in the second when we're up......

Also thought on getting Chris Leak? I heard Kolb but... like other am Wary of UH talent making it. but having a Houston product.....

From what I read and hear, many are not convinced Smith will ever make it in NFL, so why draft him in any round? By waiting another year for McCoy, we can evaluate him better for 2008. How can anyone rule out McCOy after one year that was by all standards - great? Quinn should be gone by our pick. Others say he is a ? We need biggest bang for our buck with 1st selection. We can disagree with who, but as others have said, I would not use either of first two rounds on QB. I might go for Kolb in 3rd but prefer 4th if avail. Like it or not, there will remain a cloud over our QB starter next year.

I'd go with free agency, we need some Veterens on this team...Not the washed up ones...But then again, who wants to come to a losing team...Its a catch 22....

We could always pick up Chris Leak in the 2nd to third round

There is a fifth dimension, beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition.”:tease:

McCoy isn't coming out next year.....he can't. He'll only be a true sophomore and you have to have 3 years in college to be draft eligible.

He was red shirted first year and as said just above me will be 3 years out of high school. He is eligible for 2008 draft if he chooses. A year like this season and why would he not come out?

The only thing I would like to see the texans do is sign jake plummer and have a qb battle during preseason between him and carr. Other than that I think we need to focus on that offensive line. Every year we put it off... THIS YEAR WE MUST MAKE IT TOP PRIORITY. Winston and Spencer was a huge step, don't get me wrong...but I think they go into next season battling out at right tackle...the loser battles it out for that right guard spot. That left tackle spot should be for a big time FA or Joe Thomas/Levi Jones. That will fix our line and that way we can actually evaluate Carr. Or we can see what plummer can do with our offense etc.

I would think that'd be a little too expensive. They would both be paid starter money, so by the time the season started our backup would be receiving a starters pay. I'll pass. Spend that money elsewhere. There's definetly positions to use it on.:)

we need a QB that knows how to win. I don't care how much talent they have(well they need to have some). I know a couple of QBs that know how to win, Jamarcus Russell and Troy Smith. They night not be pro bowl qbs, but they have faced plenty of pressure situations in the national spotlight and have won time and time again. But to me, I think Smith is better at that than Russell.
