Fake Punt in 1st Qt

At least the Texans tried to make something happen. I would rather see them attempt to make something happen and fail then not see them try at all. Good call Kubes.

should have pounded the ball with Dayne following Leech over Winstons block though. He can always pull several yards with that route. oh well. The coach did try, to bad the team didn't.

BUENO!
I thought the fake punt was the epitome of weakness when they did it. It was the first quarter and the Texans were already conceeding that they couldnt' gain one foot. It's one foot. The QB can usually manage a one foot gain with minimal trouble and if the Texans can't power forward for one foot then the game might as well have ended right there anyway.

You have Ron Dayne in your backfield. He's been running well for weeks now. Your head coach is Gary Kubiak of Denver Broncos offense fame. If you don't believe you can get a foot on the ground then why did you bother to show up at all.

The Texans have had success with fake punts in the past.

They've had them called earlier this season but didn't follow through with them because they didn't like the positioning of the opposing team.

I liked the strategy, what's to lose ? Surprised we haven't had more of these
kind of plays in recent weeks. But the execution sucked.

IMO, that was the start of the "Here it comes" losing attitude for the day. Didn't like the call at that point on the field or in the game.

Do you by chance remember when Jerry Glanville ran "StaggerLee" with the Oilers?
The play yesterday reminded me of that.

The Stagger Lee lateral to Rozier was run from the Oilers own 1 yard line in the AFC wildcard playoffs.

The fake punt/run up the middle yesterday was run from the Texans 40 or something by one of the worst teams in the league desperately searching for a spark.

I don't see the similarity, other than both plays failed, and both were on the road.

Yeah, I know they weren't similar plays....other than they were gag-plays. The desperation just reminded me of the Stagger Lee attempt, that's all.

Of course people don't like the call when it fails.

That's not it at all, at least in my case. I don't like the call because of when it was made and where on the field it was attempted. I think it was a stupid call when you have Ron Dayne to get the necessary 12 inches of turf. Give it to your running back or punt the ball.

Sure if it worked then it worked and nobody is going to complain about a play that worked. I still would have felt that it wasn't necessary at that point in the game.

I agree. IMO, Dayne would be the one to call on in that situation.

The Chargers ran a similar play last night with success. Oh how I wish we were as good as the Chargers.

Bad move
Why give them a short field in the beginning of the game. That just allows New England to score and it also allows their defensive to tee off on are terrible offensive.Gary you are becoming another Dom Capers.Must be you didn't want to coach Sunday. McNair should have had you walk back to Houston.

I really thought this was a horrible call.....on your own 40, on the road, I think they were only down by 7 at that time. After that play.....NE had great field position most of the day. I think the wind was against our backs at that time too.

Was the right call IMO, but the offense should have been out there to get it, not the special teams unit. NE is just too good to try that. If it worked, would have been a good, but I think the wrong unit was out there regardless. There is nothing to lose, so I like his decision to go for it, even though the impression was he was not....

They should have punted.

Ron Dayne had already been stuffed on the two plays New England was expecting a run. On first and 10 he was stuffed for no gain. On second and 10 he was able to run for nine yards, but New England was probably thinking pass. On third and 1, with the Patriots expecting a run, Dayne was stuffed for no gain.

I thought at the time that the Texans should have punted to pin the Patriots back deep on their side of the field. Going for it on 4th down or trying a fake punt were just too risky because New England had already shown they could stuff the run and if unsuccessful the Patriots would have the ball in excellent field position and would have a huge shift in momentum.

Jason Simmons thinking he could run over Larry Izzo is just plain craziness.
