Let's Not Get Down On Mario

I like many of you was upset by VY's td last week. We can play woulda, coulda, shoulda, but the fact of the matter is we didn't draft VY or Reggie Bush.

We should give props to those who said that those two would have an impact (which they have). But I am sick and tired of people comparing Mario Williams to Sam Bowie. MW wasn't like a no-name kid who came out of nowhere. He was largely regarded as the best defensive player in the draft.

This past week, I was thinking if he was drafted number 3 overall instead of 1, would he have faced as much criticism. I doubt it. I think it's all a matter of perspective. I was on the fire kubiak team earlier this week because I was angry. I now realize that he needs some time to prove himself. While a part of me remains skeptical, he has done a pretty good overall with this draft.

We may even take a cue from our neighbors to north. Jerry Jones fired a Texas legend in Tom Landry and hired a college coach. That first year they stumbled to a 1-15 record, but they laid the foundation for championship teams in the future.

Mario has done nothing to endure our hate except not be VY or Reggie Bush. He seems to be a man of high character (he was about to quit football in college to support his sister, whose husband was killed in Iraq). He's played through pain. And at times this year he has appeared dominant. He also is one of the youngest rookies (he may be the youngest?) in his class, so he may still be growing into his body.

Almost all rookies hit rough patches in their first year. VY and Reggie Bush both started off really slow, before coming on as of late. Colston was setting the world on fire until he got injured. I think it's a part of the process of going from playing 12 or 13 games in college, most of which you can coast through because you are more talented than everyone else to 16 games against top flight competition every week.

Let's put this past week behind us and support Mario. I'll leave the discussion about Carr for another thread.

I think Bush stinks, he has not even come close to living up to the hype, heck Id take Addai, Williams, Maroney over Bush any day of the week. I even think Lundy has more rushing TDs than Bush and more rushing yards.

Since we cannot put our efforts to fix the O-line VY would have been nice since he can run better than Carr.

Im not worried about passing up Colston, heck every team passed him up until round 7, and who would have thought AJ would be butterfingers a time or two this season.

Mario has not lived up to expectations, and I am willing to give him next year to show us what he can truly give us. Im not down on him but I want to see him take over a game the way Peppers can.

Ok, and using that same logic – we should not get down on David Carr, because we drafted him too.

And why did we get rid of Buchanan? He was a Texan! We should have stood behind him and let him play every down. Once a Texan, always a Texan.

As a matter of fact, we will never trade or bench any Texans player ever again – nor be critical of the way they play or where we drafted them \ how we acquired them.

Whet done is done – you are correct. So lets not make the same mistake of identifying poor performance and let Carr and our current offensive line start until they are in the mid 50’s or until they just get tired of playing.

Great idea Toro. BTW, how long have you been with the Texans Sales office?

So we lose all ball games instead and pay these worthless players?

Hey man, I have no intention of going down on Mario. I'll leave that to our local ballerina, Dee Carr.

I enjoyed watching Fox NFL Sunday when they claimed that the Texans had made the WORST number one draft pick by not taking VY and how obvious it was and he was a hometown kid and the Texans were just stupid, stupid, stupid. I laughed cause this seemed a big change over how the Texans had made the WORST number one draft pick by not taking Reggie Bush and how obvious it was and he was a Heisman winner and the Texans were just stupid, stupid, stupid.

I did not like drafting Mario, but I have come around to it. Then again, it could be that he just needs a few years, and I am accustomed to players and teams that just need a few years because I am a Texans fan. Either way, I think in a few years they are going to talk about how important drafting MW was and that he it was such a good, hard choice to make.

I had made that point after the Titans game. Its easy for the media and idiots on ESPN to act like they knew VY was great all along even though they hyped Bush at the point of his birth.

I'm with you there. The way I recall, VY propaganda died down pretty quick, especially once DC was signed. It was really Reggie Bush that looked like the one that got away.

Remember when HOU was 3-6, and Bush was getting thrashed for little productivity, and VY wasn't getting any airtime? Funny how 3 weeks later we're the idiots...

(here come the "ifs" from me...)

If we stop Losman, Cook doesnt fumble @ NYG, and a play or two goes different for the Texans vs. VY and the Titans...then who knows? But you can't go by that...I'm willing to give the M-Dizzle a chance...I think he's gonna be the man in a year or two...no doubt.

I like how some people blame us for not drafting Colston.... Seriously, no team did lol.

Oh well, no one drafted Demeco

If you can't tell the difference between a 21 year old rookie versus a QB who's been starting in the league for 5 years, I can't help you. You are comparing apples and oranges and are totally off-topic.

I believe we should get rid of Carr.

Read my post again and look at the underlying logic instead of attacking blindly.

Has Mario really done anything at all this year? From what I remember, 2 of his 4.5 sacks have come from him landing on the QB after he slipped. I can honestly only think of ONE PLAY all season from Mario where he showed signs of being a good DE, and that was vs. the Giants.

Otherwise, I have been severely disappointed in his performance and I know that he has a bad foot. But I would rather see him on IR just to save face.

I read your post... look my point is this, many of us who pay too much money to go to these games. We wanted something to root for out of last year's draft. The Texans passed on that opportunity to give the fans a reason to go to the games. I have to buy tickets next year (PSL), so sorry, I will not just 'put the past behind'. Thats absurd.

I'm all for Kubes - but the Mario pick was dumb. I don't even put that on Kubiak, as I think there were other forces at play.

But don't come on here telling fans how to think and leaving negative messages for people b/c they disagree with you. Your sir, are a jerk

Bottom line is the franchise had a chance to bring excitiment and hope to a team that has had basically nothing to cheer for since the dallas game in 2002..
I was at the dome during the " Luv Ya Blue" days and would love that atmosphere to return..
But sadly now football hope in Houston is at an all time low,.. Who knows how long it will take the franchise to recover..
nice job Bob

I think :mario: will be alright and prove all the naysayers wrong. One thing that I think he should do is use his speed to get arond the corners, and set up his bull rush. I dunno, would be nice to see another sack. What the media doesn't see is the double teams and run defence that he provides doesn't show up in the stat line.

You guys are way to early on judging Mario. He's the youngest defensive starter in the league, playing through foot problems and having to deal with less than great talent around him.

Bush has been well below average, not close to the level of expectations ESPN made for him. Vince has been alright but your crazy to truly believe he has proven himself already. He played rather average today and would have easily lost if he was didn't have his D making huge plays for him.

If I had to do it over again, I'd still take Mario. He's still only 21 years old and we all new how raw he was to begin with. Heck, he's a year younger than Gaines Adams and Quinton Moses who are still in college. He's a physical freak who is currently very limited athletically due to an injury - so I'm not sure what you guys should expect.

If for some reason I couldn't take Mario, I'd take D'Brick.

doesnt jason babin have more sacks than MW and he doesnt play nearly as much...i see babin and williams turning out to be some pretty good ends for the texans for a long time to come...

babin-weaver-johnson-williams... pretty decent

And you sir are an *****. You compare Buchanon and Carr to Mario. Learn to read. You were the one to first send potshots in my direction, don't be suprised when you get some back.

"Ok, and using that same logic – we should not get down on David Carr, because we drafted him too."

Obviously you don't understand logic. If you did, you would know that I meant that criticizing Mario is bit unfair for 1) because he is STILL a rookie 2) he's been playing injured 3) He has shown flashes at times this year. It is easier to mark done Buchanon and Carr as busts because they have been in the league for 5 years.

Criticize Kubiak, Capers, Casserly, heck Osama Bin Laden for all I care for the Texans problem. But if you are going to criticize someone's post learn to read first.

I think we should see more out of a 1st overall pick - but at the end of the day, only tie will tell whether current performance is indicative of future results.

I will agree with you on one thing though - the Texans definitely need more cow bell.

If we had picked up Drew Brees in the offseason, and DD was healthy, no one would have any reason to complain about Mario Williams.

Ok... but if you don't pick up Drew... and DD is banged up... (which was the reality of the situation), then...

Well its a moot point, isn't it?

No the point is the same. Mario Williams is a viable #1 overall pick. The only reason it seems botched, is because David Carr has played so badly all year long.

Looking at Mario, watching him play, he has done everything we expected of him. On his own Merit, he has played like a #1 overall.

Should we have picked Vince??

I believe so. I would have..... But that doesn't mean Mario is a wasted pick.

if we have to draft a DE in the next five years, or if we need a top DE FA(which doesn't exist very often) because Mario isn't getting the job done, or because we haven't got enough info to be able to judge whether Mario can play in the NFL, then he is a bust.

Can't say he has played like a overall #1 pick and I don't see how you can put Mario's play on Carr's head... but thats just MO.

Mario has to produce big time to warrant overall #1 pick money - thats how he has do be guaged - due to his hit on the salary cap. Thats going to be tough for him, from what I've seen thus far. We'll see... hope he is awesome

Umm...5 seasons compared to 14 games..good analogy!
