Stupid Play Calling

What in the world is going on? I want to know why Palmer is calling run plays in the 4th quarter when the score is tied and Davis is hardly getting anywhere on the ground. You have very talented receivers in Johnson, Gaffney, and Amstrong.

Im sorry, but the offensive play calling in close games for the Texans is ridiculous.

Hats off to the Texans Defense for giving the offense more than enough chances to put this game away. Hats off to the Texans offense for getting that early lead. But shame on the Texans offensive playcallers for choosing lousy plays in a crucial situation.

I think its time for an offensive play caller change. Time for Palmer to move.

hmmm i think its time palmer and capers move off and wait for another expasion team to come around, why do you think he was without a job until the texans hired him ??? We have to much talent to just sit back and watch us play this conservative every week ! I'm tired of it !

I also think its time to look around the league for another running back. I think Davis' first season was great. But now, hes just not getting the job done.

It is Davis. I knew from the first 2 games that he cost the Texans with his 2 fumbles in each game. Now that he is too afraid to fumble, he cant run with the same purpose and dominance. In year one he was running for the position with his main sights on getting yards or td's. Now hes running with his main sights on not fumbling.

Davis out.
Palmer out.
Capers...im thinking about it.

And audibles? It is not Carr choosing those audibles. You will not find one QB in the league who would rather hand off than throw.

yah.. im aware of that.

the point is, lets see if we change our audibles now.

and also.. if we can only audible to a run, and you know its a bad idea.. then why the heck are you audibling to a run? if its the fourth quarter and we have to pass.. seems it would be smarter to take your chances with the pass play you already called in the huddle, than to audible into a run. its not ALL on Palmer's shoulders.

As long as Capers and Palmer are here and Davis is back #1, the Texans willl always come up short. Looks like they are gonna suck in Madden '06....will I ever get to use them confidently??

ok.. lets see.

how many times did Davis get hit in the backfield? is that his fault or the lines? could it be that the zone blocking is not yet flawless yet?

im not saying davis is great, but i dont think we need to give up on him yet.

hmmm yeah our coaches really sem good at adjusting,,,but hey maybe capers is right we all know why he'll say we lost (execution) i'm tired of his excuses,,,,the audibles/playcalling/playing not to lose wont change our coaches cant adjust like most !

well as i said in another post.. our coaching has improved as our players have. So you have to ask, is it the coaches fault that we seem one dimensional? or is it the young players making us one dimensional?

i cant say for sure.. and neither can you.. so maybe we need to see more before we decide.

The only thing I know for sure is that we HAVE TO FIX OUR AUDIBLES. everyone knew what was going to happen when carr audibled.

Its the coaches fault for having him in the game and for calling run plays when everyone knows we cant run it. You know they are more ways to move the ball and drain the clock then by runnng it. A pass first O is what we have talent for and our coaches wont do it so they should all be canned.

If you cant run the ball dont!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG how hard is that to understand

if you cant fly dont jump off a building.

Hell a child understands this so our coaches should be fired keeping them to me means our owner is blind and is ok watching people jumping off a building to there death.

The #1 problem is that the team plays "not-to-lose" instead of playing to "win the game" as Jets coach Edwards would say.

Playing not to lose gives the same results as the prevent defense--a loss.

Oh yeah, and what's with all the reverse plays?

well see just like the running plays,,,the coaches say hey if it didnt work the first million times,,,maybe it'll work this time, darn it didnt so lets run it up the gut ok nother reverse,,,oh and lets give greenbay the ball back hoping brett favre chokes it up,,,its not like hes an hall of famer !!!

well,to me the key of the game was a 3rd and 15 and they got it.. It led to there only TD of the night. Our 3rd down defense is pitiful.

what I have noticed is that EVERYTIME Carr audibles.. it is run up the middle....or at least that is my perception

holding brett farve to only 16 points is pretty good day for any defense and picking him of 2 times is not to bad,,,the defense gave the offense/offensive cordinators plenty of opportunites to win this game ! The D did fine (its brett farve for crying out loud, what do you expect)

Can you imagine what the outcome of this game wouldve been if the same plays were called as in the first half? If your gonna handoff the ball in the 4th quarter in a tie ball game against the freakin PACKERS, why not put in Tony Banks? Obviously you dont trust the 1st draft pick with a hell of an arm and who your paying millions to get the ball into a receiver to keep the drive alive.

It seems to me that Palmers idea is to get into 3rd and less than 6 situations, then dump off the ball on a pass. IT's NOT WORKING PALMER.

My answer to that is FIRE PALMER NOW! I am no longer willing to swallow any excuses for this OC. We might win a few games and people might start liking Palmer etc..., but deep down I knew this guy was a morron in 2002 and he is still a morron in 2004! He is a offensive dunderhead! He knows nothing and is severely defiecient.
Why are you jumping on Palmer's case when it was Carr checking down to a running play? You'd make a lot more sense if you came out and said FIRE CARR NOW, but you're not. Why are you not even mentioning Carr? He's the one who is really calling the plays.

You need to look at the film....over the last 3 games I have watched the film 4 times for each game and I have never seen a O-Line get beat so bad. Sure, DD, could have made some other moves...but when you have 3 300lb guys on your ***, plus 2 LBs...you ain't gonna get JACK...

Now with that said, sure there may be some better backs around and to consider for the draft...but until you get somebodddddddies to block someone, it is not going to matter if you have Earl Campbell or DD...

Watch the tape...you will see, it is not DD, it's the line!!!

This next draft better start in the first round with Line help and it best be on both sides the ball....or we will have 5 years of this ****!

I agree with you on this,,,o-line is not helping D.D out very much,,,or line doesnt open up and running room for him and doesnt even get push up front, they are dominated ! A good o-line can even make a bad running back look good ! Ours is making a good running back look bad !

BUENO!
I tend to agree with a statement Vinny made in another thread stating that essentially it's both Davis AND the line. Davis isn't the answer and the line isn't doing it's job.

It's only my opinion and it certianly may be proven wrong over time but I believe that the zone blocking decision was a bad one. I don't know why this isn't happening but it isn't happening. The players may not be able to do it physically, they may not understand it properly, it could be that the job the coaching staff is doing in teaching it is not working. I don't know why they can't do it but it's easy enough to see that they can't. When the teams we play run the ball lanes open and are created. When we run the ball the offensive line collapses into a disjointed pile at the point of the run. There are no lanes to cut back into and there's no discernable hole at the point the runningback is charging towards. It's a complete mess.

Davis isn't a franchise back. I've kind of come to accept that over the course of this season and that's not necessarily a bad thing. He wasn't drafted with franchise back in mind so it's not like we went and grabbed a guy in a high round and are getting 3 yards a carry from someone who won a Heisman Trophy. We don't have a franchise back on our roster. Wells is 3rd string material who makes the team because he plays good special teams. Hollings is a bigtime project taken errantly and can't stay healthy. The man is always inactive for one reason or another.

We simply have no running game. We have a line that can't block and backs that can't run. That's a formula for a sub .500 team and that's what we are and what we will remain until this is addressed. Since running backs have such relatively short NFL lifespans maybe this is not such a problem. A franchise running back is probably the last piece of the puzzle instead of the first and hopefully the Texans will address this in the 2005 draft if ones available. We will certainly be drafting high enough to reach one if we want him at the rate we're going.

ok i understand what you are saying,,,but do you think even the best RB in the world could run behind this line ???? Gotta have a descent line before we even consider getting a new back,,,they suck at pass protection and run blocking, as we saw last year Davis can get the job done UNTIL we have all the pieces in place to get a franchise back,,,but we neeed to start with the O-line

Chris Palmer Was Off. Cord. For Oilers---did Have Some Success --i Do Not Know If There Is Availability Of A Good O/c Or If He Is Just Filling The Position Until Better Can Be Obtained--his Play Calling Is Suspect--either The Players Cannot Execute His Calls Or He Calls Plays That Do Not Fit The Teams Abilities At This Time--in Either Case, Changes Do Need To Be Made---tom

Put me in the it's both Davis and the olines camp, like Herv. It's becoming more apparent by the week that the zone blocking scheme isn't working. If they haven't gotten it by now, they won't get it. They never cut off the LB's in pursuit from the weakside, and there are rarely any cutback lanes to cut back into. That was supposed to be DD's stregth. Make one cut, and go, almost like Emmitt Smith. Clearly, it's not working. Many other teams use it to great success. Apparently our mensa's simply cannot grasp the nuances of zone blocking. The first order of business in the offseason is to scrap the zone blocking scheme, and bring back a man to man scheme. Let's do more guard pulling, traps, and the like. Next, we need to decide if DD is THE man, but in the wrong system this year, or if he is simply the third down back the team thought he would be when drafted? Next, is Hollings ever going to bee the back they projected, or will he just be a perputual project? Wells is not in the running to be the future. He is stopgap. If it is decided DD or Hollings is not the answer, the next question is do we pursue a RB in FA, or via the draft? At this point, it seems there are more questions than answers.
