Where do we go from here?

What's done is done, so I ask where do we go from here? Personally, I don't think Carr is a great fit for this team, but I don't think we should use our 1st round pick on any of the QB's coming out next year. Plus, I don't think the FO would do it simply b/c they would be acknowledging they messed up the last draft. In addition, I don't want to hand the reigns over to another QB while there are still too many gaping holes on our team. If you're trying to follow my logic, I think Vince was a special case, but I'll admit to being bias. Anyways, like I said, whats done is done and fans like me need to move on no matter how fustrating it is. Anyways, I think David and Sage should battle it out for next year. Here's what I like to see happen this off-season.

First off, I think what this team needs most is an identity. I think what best fits the pieces we have in place now is to have a stingy Defense and a bruising run game. What do you guy's think our biggest needs are? (Other than QB...lets give it a rest) I'd rank our needs like this....OL, FS, CB, OLB, RB.

First off, let me preface my view of the draft. In the first two rounds, I think you should draft based on team needs. After that, I think there are some very good players left, but they might not fit your greatest needs. In my opinion you take the best players available after the 2nd round despite your greatest needs. Finally, I think WR is the most over rated position to fill (see Detroit Lions). Here's the two directions I'd wouldn't mind seeing us take.

1) Draft offensive linemen with the first two picks.

2) Continue what we started last year with Mario and Demeco and fix the rest of the Defense. I would love to get a stud FS (I'm thinking Laron Laundry) and a quality cornerback with the number two pick.

3) ***special case**** I don't think we'll have a shot at Adrian Peterson, but if we do, I thinks he is that special, and I hope we don't pass on him if available. Despite what Kubiak says, I don't think the RB position, even in his offense is a simple plug and play type of deal. Otherwise, why would we be going through a merry go round of backs all year long? Certainly even he realizes Terrell Davis and Clinton Portis made big plays possible.

Personally, I'd like to continue building up our defense. Mario, Demeco, and Dunte are all very good and young. I really think our Defense is a stud Free Safety and great cover corner away from being really special. They could be special for a long time if we find a stud FS and another quality CB opposite Dunte.

Next, we've got to start landing some FA aquisitions that adress our greatest needs. What good is Eric Moulds if we can't get him the ball downfield b/c of a bad o-line or poor QB play (depending on how you see it)?

Finally, and I know this will probably not happen, and most will not like the suggestion, but I think we need to shop Andre Johnson. Do I think he's special, a freak, that we're lucky to have him? Yes! However, he's the only guy on the team that I think has any type of trade value that we could afford to let go. He's a great guy and player, but his talents are being wasted until we shore up the O-line and get better QB play. Point is I think we could get better faster if the deal was right. As I mentioned above, I don't believe in building your team around WR's...especially in Kubiaks system.

Go Defense. If we continue to go D with the first two picks like we did this year, just look at the players we were able to get

Dominent D's help their teams get an Identity and win games, look at the Bears, Ravens, Steelers of last year. Hell the Ravens won a SB when they had next to no Offense.

Then the FO has proven they can find players on the offensive side of the ball later in the draft.

Due this Next year and our team with be greatly improved, this doesn't even meantion what we can add thru FA
 
make this a top 8 defense next year and improve the offensive line... u do that even with Carr and the RB's we have we can be 8 and 8.

2 Jamel Cook fumbles = lost in NY and lost to Bills = 6-8 right now
2 close games to Titians

If our defense now was playing aginst washington that would be a win too.

This team is not off by much man... Improve the team entirely.. more talent, more depth = better team.

Remember you lost your starting LT,C,RT,DT,DT,CB this year.6/24 of the starters thats 1/4 of your starters. And if you know football... the better your O-Line the better your D-Line, the better you will be.


My reason that I believe that Carr doesnt have to be a superstar... Look at Rex Grossman. He tries hard to lose a game but the bears defense covers for him. The Jaguars QB has been average at best and they are always playoff contenders. Matt Hasselback isnt consider a huge playmaker, Delhome isnt either. But they all have great defenses (all in top 10) Hell Plummer and Culter sucked this year but the defense made them 7-6 right now.
 
The Jaguars gave u the blueprint for beating the Colts: run it right up their *****. Apparently, drafting Mario Williams was because of Indy. The only problem is you have to be able to run the ball. That's what I concentrate on: the running game. Give me the top tackle or RB in the first round. then take the other (only if the right player is there. I'm not about taking a 4th round talent in round 2 just becasue u need that position) in round two.

Put a hellacious offer out there for Lance Briggs and that will shore up the defence in a hurry.
 
I bet alot of Junior OT come out this next draft. We can find a good tackle in the second or third round. Hell I would use both picks on tackles.

Draft a safety please........

FS can play right out of college where as CB struggles and gets abused coming out of college. Best solutions is to find CB in free agency and draft FS.
 
I'm just asking some questions.
1) What kind of cap money are we going to have for free agency?
2) What kind of money will Briggs be looking for?
3) What kind of money will Samuels or Clements be looking for?
4) Does anyone know of a TOP FS in FA and how much will thay be looking for?
5) Any RB's in free agency.

Basicly if your reading between my lines, is can we fill our big holes in free agency then fill in the blanks with draft picks? Not a Money Guru so I ask because I have no clue if we could get one,two or all listed above. Then use the draft for one or two inpact players and the rest to develope and/or use as back-ups and have depth.

I'm not sure what kind of cap room we have but given:
a) the track record of our front office and
b) the number of players that have been cut (ie, dead money on our cap next year)

we cant be in that great of a position.

I'm sure the Bears would do anything they can to keep Briggs, even franchise him. The Pats have cap room and have no excuse for losing Samuel. IF either hit the market they would command record salaries and, as we all know, its tough to get a FA to play in Houston now because the team just sucks. Even the current players probably dont want to be there. Losing gets old fast.

Thats why it would have to be an insane offer to get a guy like Briggs. Its probably just a pipe dream until mgmt makes more moves (Im giving credit for this last draft) to show this franchise can compete.
 
I say open up the wallet for Briggs and/or Clements and draft your RB 1st round. Peterson is good and you got to put bootys in the seats.

1) As things currently stand the Texans are about $14 mil under the cap next year but they have about $7 mil still available this year to move some of the dead money forward. Look for about $20 mil of space next year. Some of that will be used in resigning the 25 or so FA's the Texans have but most of those are not expensive guys--Peek may be the most expensive one. You also have to include room for the rookie pool--ours was $5.4 last year.

2) Briggs is likely to look for top dollar so somewhere in the $5 to $7 mil per year area--keep in mind contracts are usually back loaded and the initial cap hit is often significantly less than the average.

3) Samuels and Clements are also going to look for top dollar--$6 to $8 mil area.

4) Top safeties are now going for $4 to $5 mil. Ken Hamlin and Deion Grant are UFA's.

5) Not a whole lot out there--Ahman Green is the biggest name, then Chris Brown, Correll Buckhalter, LaBrandon Toefield.

Spencer was doing a good job at LT, and I hope he is back stronger than ever. How long does Flanagan stay here? Is Winston going to be better next year? Our line depth is, as we can all see, not. I think we need a real RB, and we haven't seen enough of Kevin Walter to know if we really have a legitimate third receiver.

Whatever they do at QB....is whatever they do. It stinks that none of the arguments anti or pro Carr have been answered. There were some good moments early on, but hey, we're 4 - 9.

i say 1st round trade down & see if Landry is still sitting there. If not then go corner b/c theirs a good crop that will possibly come out this year.

I am not sure if we have seen enough of an offense to know anything except AJ can catch the ball
 
We need another leader/great player in our secondary. Dunta plays much better with another good player there in the secondary to help him out so I think that would help us out in more than one way.

If we want to do that we really should take a FS or CB in the first two rounds.

I think Landry would fit our defense pretty well. He plays controlled but with attitude...two things we need.
