I wouldn't put much stock into any rumors at this point. I doubt that the Texans front office even knows what it will do yet, let alone some reporters.

There have also been rumors about Manny getting traded out of Boston every year since he's been there, and that always ends up being a bunch of hot air. I'm not putting a lot of stock in rumors yet.

A rumor around Jake seems natural, because he and Kubes are tight.

Just saw it. They had a reporter on who said we could part ways with Carr this offseason and bring in Jake Plummer.
JP is old. We are a young team, we need young and fresh players. Unless of course JP is willing to come in knowing he's just a temporary fix til' Coach gets his hand picked man behind center(Kolb??)

What JP gives us is the opportunity to draft something other than QB with our first pick next year without the fans revolting. Personally, I'd love for us to add Joe Thomas or Adrian Peterson.

The four most important positions on the offense are QB, RB, LT, and WR. To date, we have satisfactorily found one of these four. If we don't use our 1st to fill one of these three remaining needs, I might stop watching NFL games.

Carr could only dream of putting up #'s like Plummer. If Carr was in Denver, they would have ran him outta town by now.
Plummer, on this team, will not put up stats like he has on his best years. If anything, "The Mistake" part of his nickname would only become more commonplace. I don't care if we lose Carr, but I want no part of Plummer.

At the very least, I think the Texans should bring in Jake Plummer to give some real competition to David Carr. Kubiak should open up spring drills or training camp and say "The QB race is wide open". It will be the first time Carr wasn't handed the QB position and I'd be interested to see how he does.

I'm not a fan of Plummer either....He's being ran out of Denver using the same system we are using here. . . What is going to be different here that wasn't in Denver?

Cutler 0-2 as starter. Plummer 7-4 as starter. I wouldnt be so sure about Plummer just yet. He has gone 12-4 and 13-3 the last two years if memory serves me. My problem with him is he is just too old. There are younger alternatives and frankly Sage could be one of them. We could then look for a true prospect in the 3rd or 4th round at QB. I think Kolb is an easy guess because of the local ties but the true QB prospects always come out the next month or so. The Senior Bowl, Hula, and the combines are where you can find diamonds in the rough sometimes....or workout warrior high draft pick busts ala Carr

Going with Jake Plummer would be the same difference. Especially if you still have no line or running game.

The only way I go with Jake is if you get him to come down here cheap, draft Adrian Peterson or sign Michael Turner, get another standout OT and tell Plummer he is competing for the QB starting position.

All pretty unlikely to happen.

However Plummer did say on HBO that he never had problems like now while Kubiak was there in Denver.

What's different? Denver has a much better O-line and better RB's. Jake might get "ran out" of Houston even faster! I'm no fan of Plummer either. To me he's just an older slower version of Carr which would equal disaster here! JMHO!

If you play .500 ball you have a shot at the playoffs.

Yeah, and? This team has never played .500 ball. I'm just pointing out that suggesting Plummer has been to the playoffs is somewhat of a joke, IMO. The Denver Broncos went to the playoffs and Plummer happened to be the QB for that team.

This isn't a commentary on Carr at all. I just don't see Plummer as an upgrade. They are both bad options.

I think he should open it up this week not in training camp. The Texans are not going any place this year see what the other guys can do.This has always been the problem never trying someone else at QB. Theres not alot of difference in 4 & 12 record or a 5 & 11.

Cutler "happens" to be their QB now and their chances for the playoffs don't seem so good anymore.

I think Plummer would be good enough to hold things down in Houston while we groom a replacement. We don't need Joe Montana as our stop-gap QB. All we need is a guy that is capable of starting.

Since Plummer's had success with Kubiak, it would make sense to bring him in.

The Denver offense is about the same now with Cutler as it was with Plummer. The difference is the defense is giving up tons more points than they were the first half of the year. If Shanahan thought Plummer could bridge that gap, he'd be in there. That Shanahan went to a rookie QB in the middle of a potential playoff run says more to me about Plummer than Cutler. JMO, of course. There are some available QBs I'd like to see come here, but Plummer's not on my list. We can agree to disagree on that point.

:thumbup

I tend to think of Chris Chandler when it comes to a rebuilding QB. A solid guy that will take snaps and maybe win a few games. He held things down for the Oilers and Falcons while they were grooming rookie QB's.

I can't help but think Plummer's better than Chandler was. JMO as well.

Vinny, honestly what do you think the team should do?
I've given my opinion for wanting to part with Carr last year and not pick up his option and "starting over" with Vince Young...I was told by many here that we wanted to win "right now" so it wasn't a good idea.....most of you guys know where I stand on this....you guys have certainly let me know what you have thought about my opinion. :snobord:

What should the team do? Play this out and get everyone on film in various down and distance situations for your evaluations. I'd try to sign a veteran CB, use the first pick on a projected starting CB, move Dunta to FS, and that fixes the secondary as CC Brown backs up both Earl and Robinson. This won't happen...but it sounds good on paper. We need a sam linebacker with more speed somewhere. Travis Johnson? the sad but true story of the wrong Johnson....we need another DT somewhere. We still need an elite edge rusher. No, Mario Williams is not a speed/edge rusher, but will make an excellent SDE long term. I think we need a Center and a Tackle. We need a feature back, and yeah, we are like two drafts away from being a credible consistent playoff type team - minimum...could be a lot longer than that if they don't draft as well in the weaker drafts coming up. Last year was a very strong draft year for the entire NFL. This year isn't nearly as strong a class, so you are less likely to strike draft gold.

But what about QB? As much as I would like to be Marty Mcfly and call Doc Brown and go back in time in a Delorean, that doesn't seem too likely (although I am looking into it). So, what do we do at the QB spot going forward?

We just passed on the best QB class in since like 1983. Donno....It's not a fun thought.

I have thought about Damon Huard. Isn't he a FA? I was fairly impressed with him. I don't think he can drag his team to wins like Vince, but I think he can be that 2-3 year guy that allows us to not reach for a QB, and who knows, maybe he continues to develop. The other guy I really like is Matt Schaub, but I don't see the Falcons letting him go with Vick on the team.

I think it's Sage or Plummer until we find the savior. Either way Kubiak is writing on the wall with 4 foot letters for a QB change.

I've been pushing for us to get a great (top 10 selection) OLT for years. I love the way Joe Thomas dominates pass rushers. He is a monster. I'll say this again because it merits repeating. Until we get a good to great OLT, we will be inconsistent on offense. Spencer looked good at LT for a game and a half, but I'm not convinced he is the solution. Mike Flanagan isn't the same player he was before his injury. We should be able to find a good center in the 2nd or 3rd rounds.

The team has massive issues in the secondary: a nickel back (Faggins), two strong safeties starting, and a low end #1/high end #2 CB all starting (I kind of like the suggestion of moving him to FS). I don't even begin to know where to start here. If we go into 2007 with these same guys, we are destined to get lit up once again.

We clearly need a face for the franchise at RB or QB, and probably both. I just hope we don't reach on one in the draft like we did with Carr in 2002 (I was a fan of taking Peppers at that time). I just don't see where this team can get "fixed" in one offseason.

So based on this you are saying that a Vince Young this year would've allowed us to take care of the smaller things next year. I see that.

Based on our current draft order, I see us with a DB in the 1st round (Landry or Nelson). FA wise I think we need another CB guy also. Then the rest should go offense unless another LB falls in our lap.

Anyone else hear this? And if that's the case, what do you think of bringing him in?

My thinking is that if you are going to get rid of Carr, you have to come with an upgrade, otherwise ride out this contract and hope for the best.

I think we all need to make sure we look at Bradley Van Pelt before we go elsewhere like that. From what I remember that kid can play.

If we get Plummer and keep Carr, we'll get to pick our poison.

If we want to throw game changing interceptions under duress, but make a few random good plays, then we'd go with Plummer.

If we want to get sacked a bazillion times a game, but make safe, cute under routes that don't immediately hand the game to the opposing team (but also fail to get us first downs), then we'd go with Carr.

Aww, crap...:hides:

Well if the Texans aren't going to look at giving everyone a fresh start at QB because they don't want to eat the money.

I say just bring in someone else that won't cost a bundle and let Carr work out the kinks from the sideline which is what he needed from the start. If he doesn't get better you can still trade him down the line and if he does get better maybe you can get something for him

Until they get healthy and bring in some better Oline then the next Quarterback is gonna get eatin alive as well.

I know LSU had Russell. The kid has a cannon but to be honest he still needs another year. He isn't a scrambler so he really would need a line in front of him and still prone to making bad decisions.
