Ja Marcus Russell?

V Man

Pumpkinhead
The QB for LSU.

Does anyone know anything about him?

He is a big kid 6'6" and has some good stats. He is a Junior but no one lists him in the QB prospects. Is it because he isn't that good or they know that he is already committed to returning to LSU next year?

Thanks

I list him when talking about top QB's. I consider him an athletic freak and a stud player. Some disagree, but thats ok. He has what I consider the best arm in all of football. He's not getting much mention because he isn't ready just yet for the NFL. He will need to return to LSU next year for sure. But, if anything lets you know that he is a stud, let it be that he is keeping Ryan Peroliux on the bench. Peroliux was the second coming of VY with better running ability. He's supposed to be like Vick, Young, and Culpepper combined physically. I'd draft Russell though if I had the chance.

the pure athletic ability alone warrants a look, but i wouldn't invest a first day pick on him. he's just too inconsistent and makes poor decisions when it matters most. he needs to stay another year; LSU probably has the most talented team going into next year.

I agree. He makes some questionable decisions at times. In this draft class with many top talent QB's, he would probally go in the 3rd round basicly on athletic ability and potential alone. He needs another year at LSU and LSU's team is looking VERY good for next year.

he has made some major strides this year and has become more consistent, but i want him to and i think he needs another year. he just hasn't showed he can win a big game yet. the loses this year weren't necessarily his fault but he wasn't able to take the game over and win it. he still has the tendency to force something and not let the game come to him (his first int against UF). if he came out i think he would probably go in the 2nd for his arm alone but a great year next year could really move him up especially if some the juniors come out this year.

Now if this kid declares for the draft now, are you even interested in him? and when would you take him?

I am.

When I don't know, have heard his stock is rising (2nd round?)

I watch a TON of SEC football....and I think he is a top 20 pick for sure...may be a top ten pick after all the film is broken down and people grasp his cannon and his intelligence to go along with it. I'd love to have him as his coaches think he is smart enough to be a coach if he wanted to pursue it. He can chunk the ball the length of the field and can move well enough even though he is massive and a physical freak. He reminds me of a larger Rothlisberger with a better arm and is a bit like Cullpepper except I think he has more upside. His game translates to the NFL in a big way.

I had a class with him last semester. He's definitely bigger than 6'6. He's 6'7 pushing 6'8. He is one of the most physically impressive people I've seen in person.

This is why I think if we don't get Peterson or something we need to trade our pick and get multiple picks in the first round.

if he was 6'7, LSU would say he was 6'8.

I don't get to watch all that much during the actual season, but will get a chance to watch a lot more after the all star games...but, Vinny, how do you rate his pocket presence. Can he feel a rush coming? Does he force a throw? Does he understand a checkdown? Does he constantly drift back in the pocket like Carr? Is he willing to step up even when the pocket is collapsing? When I watch LSU play, I haven't been focusing on him too much because I didn't think he would enter. Thanks anyone who can honestly help.

He plays nothing like Carr. He takes chances and sometimes he tries to fit the ball in too tight a window (he has a couple of 3 INT games)....the opposite of Carr, who doesn't throw the ball unless the wr is wide open or underneath coverage. Carr throws a good deep ball but what is missing from his skill set is a quality intermediate throw in the middle of the field. Russell has no issues with this pass other than needing a year or so to groom (imo). I think he moves and slides in the pocket very well and although he isn't a scrambler, he buys time well (the reason I threw in the Rothlisberger reference).

No they wouldn't, QBs are usually listed smaller than they are.
I don't know about that...but I do know that being over 6'8" isn't a positive trait projecting a QB to the NFL....I don't think there has ever been a great QB that tall.

Daunte Culpepper clone.

Problem is, you're going to have to take the good with the bad. Russell needs another season in college. He's not ready for the big time just yet. His best bet is to go late in the 1st so he can join an established team that has a veteran QB that will need to be replaced in a couple of years.

no, no they aren't. no player is. ever. russell is not 6'7 or 6'8, sorry.

also, with possible combine and individual workouts to impress people, and only one true first-rounder QB in this draft, don't be shocked to see someone reach BIG on russell. top 10 possibility.

He is every bit the prospect Rothlisburger or Lefty, or Cullpepper was....and this isn't as good a draft as last year...so I wouldn't consider it a reach at all.

not to mention a couple QB's taken recently in the 11-15 range have done pretty good. right now in a trade down scenero Marcus Russell or Troy Smith are viable targets for the Texans to evaluate.

please define true first-rounder QB :secret:
well, in the minds of the GM's. brady quinn is the only true first-round prospect this year...so far.

i think troy smtih will undoubtedly wind up in the first round when it's all said and done. he has the Senior Bowl to prove himself, as well as the combine and individual workouts. as long as he's at least 6 feet tall, he'll go in the first round.

Yeah, you're right. I've only stood next to him like 20 times. :sarcasm:

Kastofsna....you can't be a draft expert. On the Titans forums you said the Texans should draft Gaines Adams. That's the worst idea ever.

you are setting yourself up for a fall if you think the Texans are going to draft a first day QB...... if a QB at all.

You never know.

I think Russell stays. Let the Brady Quinn love affair year pass and get your team a national championship.

Well they're not all going to go in the first. I see Steve McNair when I watched him. A year behind DC, getting major playing time when DC spits the bit...I think he is a worthy prospect of a late day one pick. But, he has his warts also. DC came out he could throw the ball through the goal post resting on his knees at the fifty. Now...that doesn't impress me too much. No more TJ picks please.

I see McNabb in Smith, but I see a better prospect in JaMarucs than I did in David. JaMarcus has played in the SEC and leads a very good team.

JaMarcus Russell should stay in school...but if he doesn't and he's around in the second round I'd take him. The only other QB's I'd look at on the first day are Quinn (who will be gone and is a bit overrated anyway) and Brian Brohm.

I haven't seen enough of Kolb. I like Colt Brennan but he's (I think) a sophomore. Russell would be an intriguing (and imposing) pick. Strongest arm in football, by far.

Ryan Periloux is a reason Russell might come out early...

Yes, and like I've said before, I think that is a testament to Russell's talent that he is still starting with no issues arising thus far. Periloux is VY 2.0 with a better arm and faster...and not starting yet because of Russell.

I'd take Troy Smith, Kevin Kolb, and Russell all around the same spot...I think they all have around the same draft positon(IMO). Kolb not yet in the media but it will come. I think that spot is late 1st early 2nd.

Russell does seem to project to the NFL well, like Vinny was saying. I think Kolb and Smith would fit in earlier than Russell. Although, I'd feel more confident that Russell was going to end up being a superstar.

Right now, I just don't see Russell having enough will to put a team on his shoulders and win a game. I don't see him having the poise yet to truely lead his team. I see it in Smith though. But I won't advocate spending a 1st on him unless we spend like the ScRubs in FA.

I think Periloux being only a freshman plays a bigger part than anything else. With time on the bench to absorb the game, I'm not sure Periloux will stay on the bench.

russell makes some big mistakes though, too many INTs when it counts, I am not quite sure he knows how to use his talents.

Alright, I don't post here much, but as an LSU fan, I picked up on this thread and have to comment. I don't know where some of you get the impression that Russell hasn't delivered in a big game yet, but he's already led LSU to late scoring rallies to win big conference games both this year and last year. He's pulled out wins for us with huge scoring drives when we absolutely needed it against Arizona State, Auburn, Florida and Bama last year and against Tennessee this year. Plus, he came through quite nicely on the road against Arkansas when Arkansas was ranked #5 at the time.

I don't dispute that Russell has shown a tendency to force things against solid opponents, but he's made solid strides since his freshman year, and he's improved since last year. He's doing a much better job taking what's available, spreading the ball around, putting good touch on his passes, keeping his poise and throwing it away when a WR's not open. There have been numerous defenders trying to sack him, only to bounce off the guy because he's such a mountain of a man.

JR is most fun to watch when he sets up and sails it downfield. He has probably the strongest arm I've seen in a QB. He makes it look effortless. He can just seemingly flick his wrist and the ball is flying 30-50 yards downfield, or more. JR's always had the astounding arm strength, but he's learned to throw with better accuracy and touch and to take what the defense is giving. And in the later part of this season, he's actually started to run more with the ball, with great effectiveness. He rolls out well to buy more time when needed, he throws against his body with ease and he makes throws that most other QBs can't make physically.

I don't mean to imply that he has no room for polishing because he certainly does. But he's a big time talent who already has delivered in the clutch numerous times in key games, against solid opponents, even on the road against a hostile crowd. Should he go pro, I know his arm strength and freakish abilities will blow the scouts away at the combine, and his stock will soar. If he decids to return for his senior year, it certainly wouldn't hurt him. But I think some of you seriously underestimate his ability to lead and deliver in the clutch, not to mention his pure arm strength, which is as good as any I've seen.

He shouldnt have to do that in his first year.

He looks like one of those guys that will need a year on the bench to catch up.

Props Vinny : Great Blue Northern has him as the # 5 propsect. Not QB's but over all go figure. That makes two of you. I've been wrong befor.

he sounds like a perfect fit for us. That being, intelligent, competitive, and freakishly athletic. I betcha Kubiak could teach him to play right.

I see nothing wrong with drafting him and sitting him for a year behind Carr (or Rosenfels as some people would like to see). :)

I'd like to add that besides his freakish genetics and amazing arm - that he plays for LSU. Thats in a conference called the SEC incase you've never heard of it. It tends to have the best defenses in the nation... a successful qb outta there should be pretty good.
