With all the problems that we have with the oline every year why do we not go with drafting the best lineman this year. I mean the defense has been great go out get a good free agent (secondary) and them go get the best lineman with the first 3 picks we could trade down get more picks and still fill holes I mean everyone says Carr has all the talent around him that he needs then go after those he needs to keep him from running for his life or who ever is QBing( for those Carr haters ), just a thought I no it would not happen but hell what would it hurt.

the thing is that if we do get the linemen, it'll take them atleast 2 years to gel, and im sure most of us aren't gonna wait that long for carr to succeed, this was the year he was going to prove himself, and it has been pretty rough from him, we need some quick help if we want to go to the playoffs next year...which seems highly unlikely with the current situation but im sure we will get atleas 2 linemen in the draft.
 
We are not going to the playoffs next year forget it but to get a olineman in the first 3 picks I sure someone would be able to step in and start with the guys we have now while the others play at times and them the next year they start I do not think it would take that long for them to get it together.

yeah...i think someone might be able to start like spencer did for us, i sure hope dayne's not their to break their leg by running into em.
 
Think about our offensive line for a moment.

I'm going to proceed with the idea that Charles Spencer will return from his injury and be able to play LT again or at the very least play at one of the guard spots.

We have two rookie tackles starting for us. Sure one of them is on IR (Spencer) and the other (Winston) is only starting because Zack Weigert can't stay healthy but rookies are rookies and they get better IF you let them play. Are you going to sit Spencer and/or Winston next year or are you going to let nature take it's course and give them the chance to develop into real players?

At the guard spots we have Chester Pitts and Fred Weary. Now Pitts has been arguably our best lineman over the 5 years we've been around. Yes I know that's not saying much but he's started every game in franchise history. Having said that you have to take into account that he's played LT(2002), LT(2003), LG(2004), LG-LT(2005), and now back to LG this year. The only time in his career that he got to play the same position two years in a row uninterrupted was when he came back for his second year at LT in 2003. That was the year the Texans recorded their lowest ever sack total for a season and Chester Pitts very clearly improved by leaps and bounds that season. I'd like to see him get a second year at LG in THIS OFFENSE before I try to replace him.

Fred Weary is getting his first shot at starting since 2002. I'm not saying he can't be upgraded but if we hold the course with him he's liable to come back and surprise a lot of people next year.

Finally at center we have Flanagan (too old) and Hodgdon (unimpressive to say the least). I can certainly see a good case for drafting a center. In fact I don't want to sound like I think we couldn't improve any position on the line because obviously we could. I just don't think we need to go trying to draft 3 offensive linemen on day one. Replacing three starters with rookies isn't going to accomplish anything.
 
You can't say with a straight face that Marcus McNeil wouldn't be helping out the team greatly right about now.
 
Well the way we run through tackles we need replacements. I do not see Winston an tackle maybe guard we need a center this kid in there now just does not stand out to me Pitts I concede leave him alone and he should be good but we have no idea how Spencer will be when he comes back and LT is a huge position and by the 3rd maybe that swing guy Kubes is looking for. If no one worth a 3rd is there than yes go else were but I just think that it is time to put the line above all else.

Early reports are that this upcoming draft ain't terribly sweet for offensive linemen. You have to get the right guy, and it isn't as easy as saying we are going to draft high no matter who is there, especially for the philosophy that Kubiak is trying to do.

i agree for the most part herv and excellent post as usual. however, i'm still not sold on the right side of the line. sure it's great to get young guys experience if at all possible, but i'm unsure that winston's going to be that good nomatter how long we give him. if we do plan on hanging onto him, i'd much rather him as a backup next season because i'm not convinced he'll even be playing a tackle position for the majority of his career. weary's where i struggle because he's got moments where he's just a juggernaut and on the next play he's either getting planted on his rear or staring into space while carr gets sacked. he's entirely too inconsistant IMO for the starting job. flanagan i agree with and i admit i was wrong with my expectations ... i expected more and he has been fair in pass pro, but his run blocking is pretty bad (although, if we went fully zone, i'd want to re-evaluate). pitts is solid and should improve by staying at LG. spencer, i've penciled into the hall of fame if he comes back healthy ... not the first time i've said it and i welcome folks to quote me on it.

that being said, if we went 3+ linemen in the draft and atleast 1 legit free agent i'll likely create a post letting yall decide where i put my texans' tattoo.
 
I agree but there has to be someone better than say Salaam or the other backups. Since the oline has been hit with injury's and we had to rely on backups the play at that part of the team has been going so badly it hurts ask Carr. I am in no way saying none of it falls on Carr but this line is just plain bad if you have to run as soon as the center hands you the ball there is a BIG problem. You spend at lease the first pick maybe the second depending who is there could help out a lot shoot he could not hurt.

i agree, it's not the year of the big uglies that others have seemed to be, but then again i dont watch much college ball. despite our amazing draft last year (seriously, we might rival some all-time steelers drafts), i admit i was more than a little disappointed that our first round didnt mimick the jets when they took d'brick and mangold. outside of safety, we took care of deficiencies last year and hopefully we'll focus on those 300lb jems this year. kubiak's got an eye for talent on that level and spencer makes that obvious, but after 5 years of it, i'd rather draft too many linemen than too few.

yeah...but when the there is Joe Thomas and....well...thats it. then its just stupid to overpick and lose out on other spots that need filling (i.e. secondary/LB/ DT/ RB?). I think that with so many holes we have, it'll be hard to make a pick that doesn't help out the team.
 
I do not think we need 3 1st day linemen but, we definantly could use a few interior linemen which are easily taken in the 3rd or 4th rounds. For those not as farmiliar The highly touted LT's usually go in the 1st and 2nd pushing down the interior linemen. With most of the research that I have done, the 1st interior lineman will not come off the board until the middle to late part of the 2nd round. We need to give our youngsters some more time as they will only get better.
Besides all that our team has too many holes to grab oline with our first 3 picks. That would hamstring us for another 3 years at least. Our secondary needs help and we may be drafting a RB fairly high(2nd rd IMO) whether we like it or not.

So, I get what you are saying but it would not work out the way that you think it would.

Joe Thomas, Jake Long, Levi Brown, Doug Free, Jared Gaither maybe, Sam Baker. That is just the guys who have an excellent shot at 1st round. Why would you say this isn't a deep OT draft? Research buddy.

I think she is pointing out that if you force a need pick you may end up with a chump...kinda like the Cardinals and Bills did with Mike Williams and Leonard Davis. It's a mistake to force a need pick over higher graded talent in the top 10.

This is true.

However, I was just pointing out that there are more talented LT's than just Thomas.


Another guy who could fit our system is Ryan Harris from ND.
 
You can make a case for taking pretty much any position with the first pick on this team. But, given the crop of talent coming out this year I would really like an elite running back for once. We've never had one. Kubiak (supposedly) tried to make a move for Williams with Davis still on the team so you could easily say he'll be wanting one next year with Davis presumably done. Lynch is a great fit for us, even more-so if we keep Carr, because Lynch is a dinking QB's dream.
 
If Joe Thomas falls, he seems like to be the best left tackle in the draft. If Arizona is ahead of the Texans in the draft, that is probably were Joe Thomas will end up. Any other left tackle in this draft really doesn't deserve to be a top 10 pic so I think the Texans should get Adrian Peterson or Alan Branch.

Agreed. Now whether or not the Texans are close enough, mature enough, to bite the bullet and do this is anyones guess. What is not a guess...the top six OLT prospects on the board will be off the board by the time we come up again in the second round.

Look at Great Blues Northern's '02 re cap to get a look at the feeding frenzie the last time the board was rich with o-line prospects.
