Forget the BCS: AP Controversy

Where's the controversy in Auburn moving into a tie with OU? In reality, there should be at least a 3-way tie for first between USC, OU and Auburn.

It's a shame that the only reason Auburn could be on the outside looking in is because of the pre-season polls. Auburn started as low as 18th in the coaches poll and have moved up.

Now had they started off even with USC or OU, have they played so poorly in any particular week this year to warrant moving below them? I don't think they have. So they shouldn't be below them now.

The Tigers could end up being a perfect example to why they should do away with pre-season polls. 'Course, they should do away with all the polls and get on with a playoff system but I can ony tackle one problem at a time.
 
They shouldn't come out with the first poll until the week before the first BCS rankings are released.

Auburn should be #1. They played the most difficult schedule and pummelled their opponents. They have beaten everyone except LSU by 18+ points, including wins against Tennessee and Georgia. Their non-conference schedule was quite week but they play in the best conference in 2004. The biggest knock I have against them is that they weren't ranked in the top 5 to start the year (*snicker*).

OU should be #2. They have played in a very tough Big 12 South division, are tops in the computer rankings, and shut out the #5 team in the country in Texas.

USC should be #3. Other than a vastely overrated Cal team, who have they beaten this year?
 
Until they have a valid playoff format, college football will never have a legitimate championship.
 
College football should have a playoff system,problem solved! Let the teams decide it on the field of play! Too bad it will never happen!

Agreed; unfortunately, some traditions in this country totally outlive their usefulness...

I don't think we need a playoff system, but we do need conference championship games in all the big conferences. This would help in further weeding out the pretenders. Also get rid of the damn computer rankings.

Oh yea, and instant replay in all games. We all saw how Miami was screwed out of the national title in 2002. :thumbdown Talk about not having a legit champion.
 
I think a 4 team playoff is in order. Play all of the BCS games on Dec. 31st-Jan.1 and the Championship Game on Jan. 8. I think 3 undefeated BCS teams can happen but I very much doubt we will have 5+ in any given year.
 
I agree about the 4 team playoff. Yeah, there will be some controversy about the no. 3 & 4 ranked teams, but at least they get to battle it out on the field instead of some lame opinion poll or computer program.

Until that point, I just can't take college ball all that seriously. idonno:
 
IMHO, if you go undefeated the the SEC (which Auburn has a chance to do this Saturday) you deserve to be the #1 team in the nation.

If the SEC is the definition of elite football this year, then the rest of the conferences across the country have been playing some really bad football.

SEC "highlights" this year...

Auburn's perfect season kept alive by a missed XP vs LSU.
LSU, strangely enough, avoids a loss to Oregon State when the Beavers missed 3 XPs.
Florida loses to Mississippi State...a team that was beaten by Maine.
The previously mentioned Mississippi State losing to Maine (that bears repeating).
Georgia, a team many predicted would contend for the MNC, loses at home to...
Tennessee, a team that lost at home to Notre Dame.
LSU, who started the season ranked 3rd in the country, has impressive wins over:
Troy - 24-20
Florida - 24-21
Vanderbilt - 24-7
Speaking of the constant SEC doormat Vandy...they lost to Navy and Rutgers this season.

I agree the SEC is a tough conference. But "elite football"?

Sec is not overall better than Big 12, That being said, Auburn has dominated more teams than Oklahome or USC. USC has softest sched. and several non impressive wins. Should be 1). Auburn, 2). Oklahoma, 3). USC 4). Texas, Cal - tie 6). Utah

Sorry UT fans...I'm gonna cheer for Utah in this one. I'm hoping they get the at-large #6 BCS slot. There's nothing quite like seeing the underdog finally making it after nobody said it would happen!
I'm just a little dissapointed that it looks like Boston College would be playing opposite Utah in the Fiesta Bowl. I would have liked to have seen a higher ranked team like Cal duke it out.
 
I like your plan, but what about the other 14 or 15 bowls. Your still going to have problems, because your going to have more teams feeling left out then you do now. The only real way to determine a champion is by having a playoff system with the winner of each conference getting an automatic bid, and then you could have some wildcards based on record. I still say you can leave it like it is. There's no rule that you must have one champion. With the current system, you have all the winners of the bowl games ending on a positive note, while, a playoff would allow only one team to end it's season on a positive noted. Keep it the same, college football would not be the same without the constant bickering about the polls. bcs, etc.

One of the bigger revenues of bowls is the fans. So I'll use Texas fans as an example...

Round #1 - Travel to San Antonio (Alamo Bowl)
Round #2 - Travel to Dallas (Cotton Bowl)
Round #3 - Travel to Pasadena (Rose Bowl)
Round #4 - Travel to Miami (Orange Bowl)

Some schools have trouble getting their fans to go to one bowl game. Heck, some have trouble getting them to go to a home game. And now they're going to travel to 4 bowl games in a 4 week period?

Interesting idea but it couldn't happen.
 
Very good point Huge. Think of it this way. Most fans look at the Bowl game as a vacation...it is during the holidays, and these people (most from up-north) love coming to the southern US to see their team play, and stay warm for a week or so. Now compound that with the extremely expensive tix, and the fact that these fans could not travel to a bowl game (playoff) every week for four weeks (accomodations expensive, too).

If I am not mistaken, the way the D1-AA, DII & DIII do it is much like the NFL...home field advantage, etc. The Bowl people would be pissed unless the teams were playing at the Bowls...like @ Miami (Orange Bowl) or @LSU (move to Sugar Bowl), @USC (Rose Bowl), and so forth.

Cash is KING, and until otherwise, we, the fans, will come second to any true system. Maybe it would be best if UH went to D1-AA, that way I could at least follow a team that would be a part of true football, not the greedy BCS HONKS!
