ABC Sports apologizes for steamy intro to 'Monday Night Football'

NEW YORK (AP) -- ABC's ``desperate'' bid at cross-promotion backfired on ``Monday Night Football.''

The network's steamy intro to the Philadelphia-Dallas game, featuring a naked Nicollette Sheridan jumping into the arms of Eagles receiver Terrell Owens, drew complaints from viewers and the NFL.

ABC Sports apologized Tuesday for the segment, used a day earlier to promote the hit show ``Desperate Housewives'' and broadcast just nine months after another football flap -- the Janet Jackson Super Bowl fiasco.

`We have heard from many of our viewers about last night's 'MNF' opening segment and we agree that the placement was inappropriate,'' ABC Sports said in a statement.

The NFL called the intro ``inappropriate and unsuitable for our `Monday Night Football' audience.''

``While ABC may have gained attention for one of its other shows, the NFL and its fans lost,'' NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said.

The spot showed Owens and Sheridan in an empty locker room, with Sheridan wearing only a towel and provocatively asking Owens to skip the game for her.

After she dropped her towel, he smiled, agreed to be late for the contest and she jumped into his arms. Sheridan was shown only from behind and above the waist after she dropped the towel.

Then the shot panned out to two more stars of ``Desperate Housewives,'' Teri Hatcher and Felicity Huffman, watching the scene unfold on a television and commenting on desperate women.

The Eagles said they appreciated ABC Sports' apology.

``It is normal for teams to cooperate with ABC in the development of an opening for its broadcast,'' the team said. ``After seeing the final piece, we wish it hadn't aired.''

ABC has broadcast ``Monday Night Football'' with a 5-second delay this season, a precaution after Jackson's wardrobe malfunction at February's Super Bowl.

At halftime of that game, Justin Timberlake ripped off part of Jackson's brassiere, exposing her right breast to a TV audience of some 90 million. The Super Bowl was broadcast on CBS, which was fined a record $550,000 by the FCC.

I have mixed feelings about this.. one minute, I think they went over the top(with the young viewers out there) the next minute...kids nowdays know alot more that that I did at their age and anything aired on TV realy isn't provacative anymore.
 
I think those ads are inappropriate also but ABC wouldn't think so since they're getting millions to air them and I understand that it's a business.

But yea I'd rather see ads for TV's or food or whatever rather that those medications.

Frankly, the intro was done in very good taste. I wish the NFL would stop pandering to prudes; after all this is 2004, not 1854.
 
I guess I'm on the fence on this one. I think that Local TV has gone to far lately, with butt sceens on NYPD Blues, and others. So with that in mind, the intro wasn't as bad as some of the other stuff ABC and other networks are showing. I thought the idea behind the intro (since Deseperate Housewifes is so popular) was funny, but instead of the towel maybe do the lingeree (sp) thing like they did with the Redhead. :popcorn:

Describing disgust at a complete lack of morals as prudish would be laughable if it wasn't so sad.

I agree with VMan - the idea behind it was funny, esp with TO - but they could have had the same affect with her in bikini or other.
 
Yes they should be embarrassed for choosing the wrinkled prune instead of the smokin latin gal or Terri Hatcher. Yuuuuuummmmmmm. People it was a goofy promo. Stop being so hyper-sensative. Not everything on TV should be geared at 12yr olds. Get over it.
 
I can understand why some people are upset about it especially those on the west coast. Being edgy is fine, and I understand why ABC wanted to promote one of it's hit shows to a different audience. However, when I saw it to open up MNF I thought to myself "Hmm that pushing it a little too far". They did the right thing by apologizing.
 
This is one of those "time and place" type things for me. As an adult, I didn't mind seeing a sexy woman drop her towel. But, there was no forewarning, and football is a family sport. I am quite sure there are thousands upon thousands of sub-teens watching the game with their family. Parents can make up thier own mind on whether their children shoud watch Deperate Housewives, but here this gimmic was sprung upon them, so they couldn't make an informed decision. This was the wrong time, and the wrong place for such a stunt, and CLEARLY innoproiate. I find it had to believe anyone would think otherwise. Then again, I think the erictile dsyfunction ads are as equally in bad taste, but that's just me.
 
Frankly, being "offended" is purely a freewill choice. So was I offended by it? No.

But did I think it was lame, nothing but cheesy promotional garbage on the part of ABC? Hell yes!

It had NOTHING to do with football, and quite honestly, while I understand the entertainment aspect of the NFL, I think it is distracting away from the freakin' sport itself.

So Sportscenter spends valuable time talking about this stupid LAME intro instead of talking about the sport of football. Just like the TO showboating a week before, we are subjected to continuous coverage of irrelevant mind-numbing drivel instead of hearing about the strategy and tactical aspects of the sport we love.

And to add insult to injury, Desperate Housewives is a really stupid show.

QUIT WASTING MY FOOTBALL COVERAGE WITH TELEVISION GARBAGE!!

I'm a friggin' FOOTBALL fanatic, NOT a cheesy t.v.-drama / reality-television / insert-braindead-program-here fan.
 
I think if parents are going to go ape nuts over their kids seeing something like that, then they need to move to some remote location where they can hide their kids from the world. The ad didnt show anything. It was promoting a show the company airs.

It's almost kind of funny considering the topic but ABC is owned by Disney.
 
I didn't find it offensive but then again I have no kids but prolly would feel the same. I really don't see the big deal. Have you seen the commercials they play on tv during the football games more than half use sex to sell their product. I don't hear anyone trying to shut down those things. This whole Janet thing has made the FCC too sensitvie on things.
 
This is the kind of moaning that's gonna lead to the eventuall removal of cheerleader shots and close-ups on tv. Oh no!! A pretty girl in a skimpy outfit doing a provacative dance, at a football game!! This must be stopped.
 
Sometimes I get the feeling that there's a segment of the American population that's just looking for something to call in and complain about. This was the biggest non-issue I could imagine and nothing next to last years Super Bowl breast fiasco.

The intro didn't show anything you can't see on just about any network at just about any local time on any given day of the week.

I don't think it was the disrobing as much as the sexual innuendo.

Here is the full script:

Terrell Owens: Hey.

TO: What are you doing here?

NS: My house burned down and I needed to take a long hot shower (she says seductively). So where are you off to looking so pretty?

TO: Baby, it's "Monday Night Football," game starts in 10 minutes.

TO: Hey, this is major. We've got Parcells and the Cowboys ... and Donovan needs me.

NS: What about my needs? What about Edie?

TO: Will you stop it ... Just tell me what's buried under that pool.

just curious, where would you draw the line? (I'm not in any way offended by this...my reptilian skin is much too thick for that)...

...but say in 10 years, Jenna Jameson is giving T.O. full-fledged lap dance? Would that be cool? (and no, I still wouldn't be offended by that, either) :popcorn:

Not sure where to draw the line. First off, none of my kids watch football. Plus, they aren't up at that time anyway because they go to school the next day. I'm personally responsible for their well being in every way for the rest of their lives anyway. Honestly, I don't know where the line should be crossed.
 
yep, I feel the same way. Which is basically the source of my desire for football itself to be the entertainment instead of all the Hollywood inspired garbage they are dressing it in.

My opinion has nothing to do with being "offended"...I just wish they would bring back the "football is war" mentality of previous decades.

But, as always, I'm in the minority, so I just got to live with sprinkles on my football! ;)

I don't like the erictile dsyfunction ads either, and I already stated that. There is simply a time and place for adult language, sexual innuendo, and humor, and Monday night football is clealy not it. There are many children watching. Millions of parents were outraged at that. I'm not sure what the "higher than you" comment was about. Maybe you would like to clarify?

I think most of us on this site agree. But, you have to remember that MNF is marketed to a broad audience, not just hardcore fans. I think all in all that's good. Some people will make the conversion to a hard core fan from just a causal fan because of a MNF game. I know this to be true because it happened to me. I was a casual fan until MNF in Houston in 1978. Oilers vs. Miami. Earl Cambell, the Derrick dolls, Crazy George, Bum, and the rest captivated me on that Monday night so long ago. I was about 15 at the time, and I have been a super fan ever since. We shouldn't be football elitists, looking down our noses at the great unwashed. rather, we need a big tent policy. There is room for all of us on the bandwagon.
 
What I meant to say was that old saying "holier than thou". If millions of parents were outraged maybe it had more to do with a black man with a white woman. Cause if you are going off of just purely sexual content, I see no one outraged about Shrek movies. There are so many sexual references in that movie, albeit subtle, it's not even funny.
 
Of course MNF is trying to target a broad audience but in reality it is a sexist sport. I think we all can agree with that.
 
I think instead of them trying to "entertain" us with skits or whatever they should just go back to Hank singing along with football shots. Nobody complained then and most people like the catchy song and the way they incorporated the team names in the song.

It was football,it was fun and it wasn't offensive to anybody.
 
You know what is funny about this whole episode is that I watched the Monday night game but didn't see the intro. Since people complained about it, the intro has been broken down and rebroadcast on all kinds of shows at all times of the day. I have now seen it probably 5 times. So for all the kids who didn't see it in the first place, the outrage has given them plenty of channels to see it multiple times for the next week.
 
I heard about this on the way back from Ambers house on the bob and tom show...should of heard what they said about it..

That's ridiclous. I think that viewpoint is a distinct minority. I truthfuly never even thought of it until you pointed it out. Nothing makes me angrier then when the race card is played so easily. Stuff like that makes it hard to tell when there is a legit question of racism. It's like the boy who cried wolf. It just turns everyone off. I know this to be true because everyone I know just HATES that stuff with a major passion. Quit playing the victim, and you might find you aren't one.

Well the truth of it is, whether you feel it is ridiclous or not, there are people in this country that still see that as taboo. And not once did I throw out the "race card". Trust me, I would like to believe that this is a society full of peace and love and where we all get along but the bitter truth is that it isn't. Not everyone thinks like you Mr. Porky and let's not be so quickly to dismiss that the black man/ white woman issue couldn't be pary of the outrage.
 
The race issue was brought up on the morning radio show(610 am, forgot the shows name) also. Considering most of the "suits" are old white men, I could see a point. Like I said earlier to me i didnt see a big deal so it's done with me. I just can't believe it's become such a media event.

Excellent post. :thumbup Same thing with the Janet Jackson thing. That happened so fast and at a distance where you couldn't tell much even if you were waiting for it, but thanks to the uproar, if you missed it, well here's your chance to see it UP CLOSE. Janet's boob was posted all over the internet. I watched the halftime show. I saw when the incident happened. You couldn't tell much. Oh but let's make an issue of it and plaster it all over and show everyone what happened.

I didn't see the intro to MNF. But with all the hoopla about it, I'm sure it's just a matter of time before I run across it. I don't know if it's funny or just sad.

Sexual predator? Hardly. Looked consensual to me, she literally threw herself at him. And No one does a better job of playing T.O. for a fool than T.O. Where was Dungy when T.O. has his self centered, immature and selfish tantrums. Where is he when he berates his teammates and coaches? Where is he when he questions another mans sexuality? Doesn't this perpetuate a negative stereotype of black men?
 
Last Night on JT the Brick's radio show, he had the great Jim Brown on. He asked Jim if he thought the TO thing was a race isssue. He said flat out no, just a man and a women doing a skit in bad taste. He went on to say that his problem was that the NFL and ABC knew exactly what they were doing when they put that on the air. It was shameless promotion for both shows (MNF and DW). Just another way for the suits to put money in their pockets. :hmmm:
 
I'm sorry but this this is more a reflection of T.O. and other "characters" than of Black America. There is no way I see McNabb, Culpepper, Marvin Harrison or a host of other African-American players doing this. Could I see Jeremy Shockey do it? You bet.

I grow tired of the divisions in this country based upon ethnicity. At what point do we stop differentiating ourselves (Italian-American, African-American, Asian-American, etc.) and merely refer to ourselves as Americans? I guess that will not happen in my lifetime, if ever.

That was basically my point. Thanks for saying it better than me. To me, we have crossed that taboo a long time ago. I think the "shock value" of seeing a white woman and black man wore off some time ago. It's really easy to see why they were picked for the skit, and race was not one of those reasons. Sheridan plays the resident slut, and was totally in charachter, and TO is high profile, self centered, outragaous, and likes stunts. If the most outragous guy on the team happened to be white, that person would have been in the skit. Trying to bring race into an issue where it doesn't belong, just divides us further. We need to pull together as one. As we all know, a house divided cannot stand.
 
I agree. It was a pub stunt. Now get over it. When I watch the Houswives with my wife, do I get offended by the Victoria's Secret commercials? They are more provacative. Hell no. That's why I watch the freakin show. You know, I love this country, but this puritan (sex and innuendo is bad and not appropriate unless it's on cable at 3 am) attitude just goes so overboard sometimes.
