Mike Sherman Thoughts - Div1a HC?

mike sherman has come up as a possible replacement chuck amato at nc state. he is apparently interested in filling the head coaching vacancy. i'm interested in gather your opinions on the guy, his coaching/managing, and his likelihood to succeed as a head coach at a bcs conference (acc).

i'm not sold on the guy at all. all i've heard was how poor of a job he's done as a general manager and how dismal his offensive lines have been. his (in)ability to coach an o-line is especially worrisome for nc state, because that is a major area of concern for our program.

our leading candidates so far are paul johnson, norm chow and jimbo fisher. nearly everyone is sold on these guys. david cutcliffe (oc @ tennesse) has explicity said he wants the job, but the fanbase is split on him. finally, mike shula's name as been tossed out by a few media publications, but i don't think he's a viable candidate for the nc state vacancy.

Many people on here think that Sherman and Kubiaks philosophies clash and that it would be better if Sherman left the team.

He is a good coach that got caught in a bad situation in Green Bay. The Packers will not be good again until they have the chance to rebuild. That starts with Favre moving on. You would be lucky to get him as NC State's coach.

I would venture a guess that this is correct. Grant it, I am totally removed from the situation, but the offense seems to be visably pulling in terms of philosophy.

Head coaches, turned coordinators / consultants have not really had a track record of success. Mike Martz comes to mind. Buddy Ryan coming in caused a lot of dissention as well when he came in with the Oilers. About the only one i can think of right off the top of my head doing well in the NFL after being a head coach is Ray Rhodes. Many would argue, as I would, that he was never really head coaching material.

Those high profile guys, just don't seem to have a mindset of improving the team as much as they are forwarding their own careers.

NC State should give a call to Schiano at Rutgers. U of Miami is going to talk to him. He is a hot name for sure and everyone seems to want him.

Mike Leach would be great for NC State as well. He is such a good guy. Would LOVE to be on his staff. Worked a couple of camps with him and he is just a great guy to work for.

David Cutliff is a guy who will get an interview there. He is the OC at the University of Tennessee.

Norm Chow is a guy whose name is coming up in the circles that I run with. He wanted to be a HC somewhere and I think still has that urge to do so.

Just some thoughts for ya there.

My opinion in a nutshell is.....

Sherman want's to be a head coach, but I'm not sure if he wants to drop back down to the college ranks. If it wasn't for Kubiak talking him into coming to the Texans, Sherman would have sat out this year. Obviously he didn't get a NFL Head Coach position, but he had a rough departure from the Packers, after his first losing season. I certainly don't expect him to remain with the Texans as an Asst. coach very long.

Considering this is Kubiaks first Head coaching job, I believe he has been a good source of information for Kubiak and has been there for him just like Kubes wanted. He needed or wanted someone close by thats "been there before". I don't know if they have clashed, but I would like to see Sherman move on so Kubiak does things on his own.

As for the OL. It was bad long before Sherman ever came along....... I wouldn't base hiring him on that aspect.

thanks for the replies thus far.

coachdent:
- schiano is too far out of reach for our program. the only job he was likely to leave rutgers for was miami, and he officially turned them down today. the only other head coaching job that he would likely be interested in is the penn state job, but paterno hasn't left yet. i would gladly welcome him to nc state, but it's just not going to happen.
- mike leach has been brought up amongst fans, but i have no idea how interested our school or he is in the job.
- i hope that cutcliffe DOES NOT become our next head coach. for one thing, he has MAJOR health issues (a couple of heart attacks?). secondly, he couldn't win at ole miss. he apparently doesn't do well with alumni, and comes off as arrogant at times. on a positive note, he has been a great recruiter for tennessee in north carolina high schools. he has contacted various media and has stated that he wants the head coaching job. he is a last resort guy, imo.
- norm chow is a prominent candidate. he served as our o.c. during philip's freshman year. when he left for southern cal, he said he would be open to returning to north carolina. i guess the east coast rubbed him the right way a little. :)

- as i said, sherman has apparently expressed interested in our head coaching vacancy. sherman is too random of a name for someone to post b.s. sources. i don't know how solid the sources are, but the lines are there to be connected:

One of the current Assistants is tight with a big booster in Charlotte. Sherman contacted the booster in Charlotte to throw his name in the hat. I prefer to keep the State Assitant Annonymous at this time. No rumor to this one.
According to my guy, Sherman is interested but isn't getting alot of love at this point. That could change of course.
that second quote is from a moderator.

just in: stanford fired their coach. everyone knows that's the one job norm chow REALLY wants. i guess he's no longer a candidate for us.
