Demeco best linebacker in NFL?

TheRealJoker

Hall of Fame
The guys on FSN just mentioned it and I just may have to agree.

Statistically he is the best. Although since he is a rookie he does not yet have the aura of a Brian Urlacher, Ray Lewis, or Derrick Brooks. But right now I cant think of any linebacker playing as well as DROY. The man is lights out!!! Where is an engineer emoticon when you need one? :mario3:

that is the truth.....we have all these mario emoticons....wheres the ones for MeCo.

Let's put it this way. Ray Lewis plays on an extremely talented Ravens team. Urlacher plays on probably the best defense in the NFL. Both those guys have very good players at just about every position on their defense. Demeco has guys named Shantee Orr and Morlon Greenwood next to him and some guys named Lionel Dalton and Anthony Maddox getting regular playing time on our defensive line. What would Ryans be like if he played on the Bears?

He is the closest thing to Derrick Thomas I have seen. God rest his soul, DeMeco is special and DAMN glad we got him. Today as far as I am concerned wrapped up DROY.

Just imagine when we upgrade our defense in the offseason how good the engineer will be conducting this unit!!!:mario3:

I totally AGREE! However, I have a bad feeling that he will be somehow ROBBED b/c of our bad win/loss record! If this happen, I will be extremly PISSED! Demeco imo should win DROY!:mario3: :mario2: :cowboy1:

you could argue that he actually gets more tackles because all the players around him dont get any. some of the players on other teams take tackles away from those other guys.

If it makes you feel better, AJ Hawk's team has the same record as we do and DeMeco has better stats. We better not get robbed again . . .

But he seems to be @ the place to make the plays most of the time, like when he intercepted that pass, he anticipated where Brooks was gonna throw it. Demeco has that God given instinct to be at the right place & at the right time! And he's just a rookie! Mike Singletary come to mind!:mario3: :mario2: :cowboy1:

Yeah and don't forget about Simms he plays for the Lions. The one that I see getting considerable notice is Dummerville with Broncos 5'11 DE has like 7 sacks. But still think DeMeco gets it.

demeco and mario serve as the foundation to a potentially very good texans defense if we continue to draft with a defensive mentality. when drafting next year, we have to think about drafting some defensive players that will enhance demeco and mario's games... and once that happens,.. we can truly be a defensive force. demeco is simply amazing,.. as is mario... they both seem really comfortable right now, and they are making the defensive unit "their" squad.. i am really proud of both of them, they give us a ray of light in a dark, clouded season. as for DROY, demeco has already locked that up... his numbers have already surpassed lofa tupatu's DROY numbers.. i just hope we can finish this season with 3 more wins... to finish the season at 7-9.. its funny, going into this season with kubiak's background i was absolutly estatic about our offense, and now my hopes of the texans being a good team lie within our defense.. continue to build up our defense and o-line, and we should be turning some heads by next season... Go Texans!!!!

Isn't it funny that the Texans went defense with the first pick of the draft and the Saints went offense with the second pick. Those teams seem to have the DROY and OROY respectively, but neither of those guys were the first two picks of the 2006 draft.

Not to take anything away from Ryans, but notice how the defense is getting better as this two guys are getting more PT. Makes me wonder about whether Payne and Travis Johnson are worth the money.

DeMeco is awesome to watch. He's been one of the few consistent highlights this season. And he'd better get D-ROY if there's any justice with the football gods!

DR is our future and hope for winning seasons. He's elite and I'm stoked about future defenses built around him, D.Rob, and Mario. This is how many championship teams have been built, and I think Kubiak is a HC that will be able to put the pieces together and make it happen.

Yeah, I think the same thing at times. I'd never heard of either Dalton or Maddox before the season, but they seem to play well at times. As does N.D. Kalu.

I have been very impressed with the run stuffing of our two DT's recently. I think they have only combined for about 1 sack, but I agree that they have given this defense a boost.

I don't think Dalton and Maddox are even on the field on passing downs. Weaver and Kalu have been playing DT on passing downs.

does anybody believe that demeco can improve his pass rushing skills?? i am very happy with his production in all facets of his game, but will he ever evolve (or improve) into a 10+ sack type LB? i think we have somebody really special in demeco, he will become an icon in houston sports history in due time...

middle linebackers can be used as blitzers and he has great body control and I can't see how he will be any better at blitzing...he's one of the best in the league right now in the middle. Superior blitzing skills (timing, body control, instinct) are usually found in OLB's...so DeMeco is fairly special inside already. He's gonna get better too...he's just a rook.

demeco should not only get consideration for rookie of the year, but should be getting serious nods along with champ bailey & brian urlacher for defensive mvp.

i think he's got some of the best pass rushing skills at the position in all of football. 10+ sacks for a 4-3 linebacker is too much of a stretch though because it's more blown protections and getting enough opportunities that would even give him a chance at those numbers. if he has a season like that, combined with his play in every other area, go ahead and start making calls to canton.

are our OLB's the right type of players to surround demeco with?? greenwood does not seem to fit the OLB role; although, i am happy with his play.

I don't think either of our OLB's are quality NFL starters. Both will be replaced in the next year or so imo.

Watch out for Tony Taylor out of Georgia...plays a great WLB and could replace Greenwood on our team. He would be a good guy to be around DeMeco. He's under the radar so we may be able to get him a little later in the draft. Maybe early third (hopefully). Realllllllly good hands. He's got 5 INTs this year and is always around the ball.

I think that Greenwood (unfortunately) has a better chance of staying with this team than either of the choices at SLB. One his salary, with the money we are already spending next year on players we cut this year, the management may choose to wait one more year on him. Plus he is closer to being a NFL quailty player at WLB than Orr is at SLB.

Yeah, he had an awsome game today. And I dont' know how the heck he always gets to the QB on the blitz. He seems to be in the QBs face a couple times every game. I thought he was a pretty good player with padded-down stats for being a good MLB (the guy who's supposed to put up stats) on a crappy team. But he's going from "pretty good" to arguably "the best in the NFL". He really had an incredible day today.

I believe Meco is the best in the NFL right now. I don't see how people can't get excited knowing that this guy will be leading our D for a long time. >crosses fingers< We are starting to get quality guys for this team and slowly but surely Kubes and company are fixing the mistakes that Capers and Casserly made. A few more drafts like the one we had this year and this team will be one of the elite. (I hope :)

Lets go Texans!!!!:texan:

Vinny, confused by your comment "timing, body control, instinct are USUALLY found in OLB's". Demeco played OLB at 'bama are you saying move him back outside to make him better or leave him inside and let him keep learning the MLB positon to make him better?

Which positon is harder to draft for OLB or MLB?
Will there be more OLB or MLB in FA.(I know most people are stoked about Briggs from the Bears)

With this exception of our team, most offenses handle the front four of defensive fronts pretty well. More and more teams rely heavily on blitz packages to bring pressure. You've got to have corners who can lockdown cover. Robinson has been inconsistent and Faggins... :brickwall Well, let's just say that his play has been less than sterling at times.

Absolutely not. I love what DeMeco is doing and he is on his way toward being one of the best but that kind of excellence is ascribed in a career not 3/4 of a season. Still not a Brian Urlacher.

uh... no. look at what shawne merriman did yesterday after returning from his 4-game suspension: 6 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and a number of qb pressures (one of which led to the interception during the bills' opening drive).

even having missed 4 games, merriman is still near the top of the nfl sack list. he was #2 or #3 before his suspension.

upgrade at FS and another cover corner is all we need on defense. the rest of the draft/offseason can be devoted to the offensive side of the ball: possibly a new QB, a running back, perhaps another deep-threat reciever, and an offensive line. to be honest, if it hadnt been for the injuries to the line, i think our yr could have been better. spencer will hopefully be back next season.

depends on how you use your linebackers but outside linebackers should have more pass rushing skills and have more fluid hips for defending the flat, so they are a more of a rare athlete with a deeper blend of size/speed than a conventional 4-3 mlb. Old school 4-3 MLB's do lots of grunt work with linemen inside the tackle box so you don't need as rare an athlete to man this position imo. I will say that defense is evolving in the NFL and we teams going to more speed inside. Ray Lewis, Jon Vilma, Lofa Tatupu, and DeMeco Ryans are smaller forward looking prototype players who have great speed and the ability to blitz and can stay on the field in passing situations. As far as moving him outside, DeMeco looks so good in the middle I'd be afraid to screw up something working as well as it is. I'd look for a Sam backer in FA and draft a will as my ideal off-season remedy - keep Ryans as the man in the middle, calling plays and making sure the guys are in the proper technique.

I agree with all of this...

Agreed. One of the things you need to do to help DeMeco out in the middle is getting one stud big body run stopper, two would be terrific. Ray Lewis had his greatest success when he had a Saragusa infront of him. When you have that big guy, teams must double team that down lineman and it frees up the linebacker to run. Without those guys, Lewis was getting blocked and would get swallowed up.

I agree with all of you guys as well.

Vinny, you said draft a will and grab a FA sam. I would love this because Tony Taylor out of Georgia is one of my favorite NCAA players and he seems like a player the Texans would be attracted to. He really would complement our defense because he is a playmaker, very good at causing turnovers (5 INTs 2 FFs this year as Senior WLB of Georgia)

As for a FA sam let's look at our top choices: http://www.footballsfuture.com/2007/nfl/freeagentsLB.html. Adalius Thomas maybe? Is Briggs a SLB?

The homer in me wants to agree with this but I just dont think that Ryans is the best LB in the NFL.

If we had only one chance at a Super Bowl & we could have any LB for that one season then I would choose Brian Urlacher.

But if I was choosing a LB for the future, someone to build a team around, no doubt in my mind that Ryans would be that guy.

I hope you're right about this. Even though Ryans is ahead of Hawk in most, if not all, of the statistical catagories, Hawk has won Rookie Player of the Week, twice! I guess what I'm getting at is since Hawk was considered the best LB in the draft he is probably getting more of the publicity than Ryans. I hope this will not have an effect on the voting, but you never know. JMHO1

It may well come down to someone getting in the ProBowl.

Unfortunately for Ryans hopes, the NFC outside linebackers are weak statwise. Only two NFC OLBs have 100+ tackles, and both are rookies (Hawk + Sims). Meanwhile, DeMeco's up against London Fletcher, Zach Thomas and Donnie Edwards - all with a higher profile and 110+ tackles (not to mention Ray Lewis, Tedy Bruschi and Vilma from ESPNville). Granted, DeMeco runs away with the solo tackle count (his 97 lead the league - and he's a whopping 19 up on London Fletcher, #2 in AFC), but the ProBowl ballot only displays combined tackles.

I think Hawk or Sims makes the ProBowl, and that pretty much seals things.

I'm not hating on Texans here, but no way is Demeco the best linebacker in the NFL. He's definately a top talent stud rookie who should dominate for years, but the best linebacker in the NFL is Brian Urlacher.

That said, I'm thrilled with his progression.

The players voted Brian Urlacher in the top 5 most overrated players in the NFL with the likes of TO and Mike Vick.

Urlacher? Overrated?

Dude, did you watch the Arizona Chicago game on MNF earlier this season? Urlacher was in on EVERY play for like 2 straight drives. Finished the game with 19 tackles! 19!!! I pity the fool who openly admits to thinking Urlacher is overrated.

Yes, Ryans is the best LB in the NFL. As a matter of fact, he's the best defensive player in the NFL! *shakeshead*
Gosh, this board is getting dumber and dumber the worse we play. Congratulations! :mario2:

Should I go dig up my "this guy will be what Lofa Tatupu was to the Seachickens" thread from during the draft? ;)

Pretty cool he got a sack, FF, FR, and INT all in one game. Didn't Sharper do that vs. the Giants, or was he missing the sack?
