How the guy lasted this long is beyond me, after negotiating several terrible contracts for players that are either no longer around or not playing up to them (Walker, Coleman, D. Davis, Carr, Weigert, McKinney, Flanagan, Wade, etc.)

Surely this organization is at its lowest possible point. Are the players already quitting on this coaching staff as well? It sure looked like it this past Sunday.

Texans vice president of operations Dan Ferens has resigned. Ferens, a salary cap expert, who has negotiated Texans contracts since their inception, has returned to his home in Pittsburgh where he grew up and spent 15 years working for the Steelers.

General manager Rick Smith said Ferens resigned for personal reasons.
 
We got our new bogeymen. Not sure who these vocal majority are, but they are out there and will try and destroy the Texans at all costs from within. :rolleyes:

If you did not see this or ask for this over the last couple of years then you were not in tune with the former regime's lack of vision and it's subsequent spending.

Not to be mean, in that if he truly resigned for personal reasons I don't want to sit here and dump on the guy, but this is the same cat who negotiated fiscal gems like Todd Wade and Gary Walker. How he kept his job all these years is beyond me.

The Greenwood signing was ridiculous as well. And don't forget his lackluster cap management and lack of fiscal creativity were responsible for Glenn being sent to Dallas and Sharper to Seattle. We havent had much leadership since those guys were sent packing. Obviously, Parcells thought Glenn could still play and needless to say he wasnt wrong.

Wasn't this guy a contract lawyer more than a football guy? If so, chalk another one up for the 'I Hate Lawyers' crowd.
 
He didn't pick the players, set market value or decide what to pay the players. He negotiated deals within set cost windows for players the coaches wanted, he watched over those contracts, and he kept tabs on the cap. I understand the desire to cleanse but good gawd....
 
AJ, I had believed that he was the negotiator of the contracts. If not, then whoever negotiated the contract of Greenwood grossly overpaid to sign him. Granted, he might not have selected him but if you are negotiating you need to be able to negotiate a contract that pays equitably compared to contracts held by comparable players at his position.

We gave Pro Bowl money to a guy who had never played in the Pro Bowl. He's a good guy and hasn't been a completely awful pick but I do feel we overpaid for his services.

Have you ever heard of the term "price to win?" (in terms of winning high dollar business contracts -- proposalese). That's not much different from "price to acquire" when it comes to signing FAs.

In other words, Ferens wasn't free wheeling anything. He was the negotiator but he was working within the constraints of market value, available cap space, and most significantly, the coaches needs, wants, and desires to acquire or retain certain players. They overpaid a bunch of guys, in part because they had to... not because Ferens is a dumb ass. He is quite the opposite, I assure you, and will be tough to replace.

It is interesting how so many assume that, because he was part of the C&C team, he is a total piece of crud.

:um: . . what part of "He didn't pick the players, set market value or decide what to pay the players" did you not understand?
 
I got it. And I'm no Einstien. Didn't Kubes say today on the radio that he was tired of living apart from his family ? Wish him all the best. I guess it's going to be one feeeding frenzy after another untill the draft rolls around ?
 
Ferens was good before he got here. Why we sign so many high dollar free agents is part of our problem because we release them too early and have to eat their contracts.
