Picking #1 Again !

brewhaus

Rookie
With the direction the Texans are headed this season is there a possiblity that we could get the #1 pick in the '07 draft?

IF this is a possibility, would it be wise to pick first again or trade down with another team for more picks later in the draft?

Trade down. We need all the picks we can get. Plus, I think it'll be tough for the organization to afford another #1.:spy:

I really hope this isn't the case, and I don't think it will be, so long as we beat Oakland. If we have the #1 pick we really need to get rid of it and trade down a bit (perhaps around picks 7-10) so that we can get a good DB (Unless they're going higher this year of course). I know there's plenty of people out there who will be crying for Quinn or Peterson...but we definitely don't need to waste a 1st round pick on a RB with Kubiak's system, and I don't think QB is more urgent right now than a killer Safety or CB. That's just my thoughts, however.

We should have a top 3 pick at the very least. Gotta try for a franchise QB this time around.

IMO, this year doesn't look great for QBs. I'd grab Kolb in a later round. Build him while DC is still taking the snaps. We can fill holes elsewhere and insert Kolb in a year or two.

Until we get a bulldozer of a running back, we will never get to where we want to be. We have to get a RB this year and watch the O take off and keep the D off the field...

Win by outscoring opponents...

We will probably get a top 10 pick and when we do I think we need to trade down and try and pick up a couple 1st rounders. We get a safety and a CB to go along with Dunta and then in the second round get a WR (Walter has done next to nothing this year and have someone to eventually replace Moulds) and from there out get offensive lineman. I believe OL is the position you can get the most quality at in the later rounds which is why I'd like to take care of some other needs before then. We definately need to address the secondary and the OL, and if we hit it right like we did this year I think we'll be greatly improved for next year.

We need to lose to Oakland and try to shoot for the #1 spot and this time we need to draft the best talent and not what we "need"

Id like to know where everybody who wants us to grab a RB or QB in the top 3 is going to get the money to pay for them? IMO if it happens, they will trade down. Kubiak wont draft a RB that high and they are still really high on Charles Spencer so Joe Thomas probably isnt an option. I think they trade down into the 8-12 range and get a defensive playmaker in the secondary.

Some players are gonna be cut after this season again, just like after last season. That is where the money comes from.

Why do you keep saying Kubs doesn't draft rb's in the first round? When has Kubs ever drafted, except for last year?

mmhmm but that doesnt leave a whole lot of money for say free agents and other draft picks does it?

I don't agree... we don't have the same lineman as denver. Until we can provide we don't need a good RB, I want one. The OL has not shown that they can run block in the scheme and I think we need someone with more talent as opposed to average talent to compensate for the learning curve. Once we have the OL in place and the big time runner isn't needed, then we trade him away for another piece.

Trade down. However, It will still be the problem of having a trading partner. No one to dance with, can't trade down. Teams don't want to take the guys in the top 5 picks. To much money and to much risk.

It's funny how you see all these 'trade down for more 1st round picks'. Truly laughable.

BTW, Kubes was mentioning on radio the 06 draft class this year. He said Mario, despite playing hurt, played his best game yesterday, Demeco Ryans, in his opinion, is having a Pro Bowl season. Charles Spencer, he said he was still deeply concern regarding his injury, even though progressing well, still concerned that he can come back to the same level. He said he has been very pleased with how Eric Winston played in the two games he's started, literally getting better with each snap. Owen Daniels will be a very good player, along with Wali Lundy, and David Anderson is performing well on special teams.

Now here comes the kicker . .

He said that even though this year was a good draft, "we''ll need about four of those in a row in order to become a good football team".:yikes:

Trade the #1 and get a safety or cb in first. After that get more defensive guys, use peek or babin for trade bait, it's time for one of them to go, doesn't matter which one, teir both pretty much the same player. The guy who said draft Kolb from UH, I think that is a real good ideal, Nuture him for a couple of years and let him come in, the guy has game and he has a strong arm.

Babin doesn't have much (if any) trade value. Peek may have had some before this season. Might be able to get a 5th or 6th for Peek and maybe a 6th for Babin if there's a sucker out there somewhere.

If we can afford to waste our money on players like Steve McKinney, Marlon Greenwood then yes we can afford to pay for the first pick in the draft. Kubiak on 610 today reported that he is not sure if Spencer can play football again after having such a devastating injury. His injury could be termed career ending injury, that's how bad his injury is.

We signed McKinney to new contract last year that runs through 2009 season I believe.

Bottom line is if we end up with top 3 picks then seriously we need to consider finally to draft Joe Thomas or Adrian Peterson and in the second round draft Reggie Nelson, Eric Weddel, and in the third round draft Kyle Young, Doug Datish, Dan Mozes. Unless we improve our OL we are not going any place any time soon. Games are won in trenches and now the time is perfect to fix those holes.

Free Agency - sign Clements, Briggs, Best DT available in FA.

Sheed, right now I would ship Peek for that 5th or 6th. we could really use some extra picks. I have a firm believe that our upcoming draft picks are going to pay dividends like 06 class. What u think about Kolb, Wonger?

Pickin' #1 Again would be a good country and western song title for our woeful groundhoggish day team.

this team ain't seen light from a star
it does not matter who we field on first and ten
the fans cry to get more help for Carr
as always we pickin' #1 again

If we have one of the top three picks we should trade down to maybe 9-12 and get a lil O-Line help. Then we can go after a playmaking DB. In FA we should go after M. Turner. He would help our running game tremondously. Just a wait and see game once the season is over.

I agree with you on this kc. And now with the loss of Flanagan, it shows we really need alot more depth on the O-line. I say if we have a shot at getting Joe Thomas in the 1st round (and it's starting to look like we will), then we need to take him. Put him in at LT and move Spencer (if he recovers) to G. Then get the best C available in the 2nd round. 5 years is long enough using a "patchwork" O-line. JMHO!

Most teams play for January. We play for April.

If the draft were today, that would mean that we'd be picking around 4-8. At this point, I'd much rather have a top 10 pick than a top 3 pick.

Top 3 picks cost too much and they're too hard to trade.

LOL.......That's good stuff Kaiser.

I'm not for picking the best Olineman available

the difference between a top 5 lineman and a high 2nd or 3rd isn't that great. thats what the scouting department is for. We need playmakers......offense, defense, I don't care. We are losing games because we don't make the big play. We need a S, #2 CB, RB, and LB........take one of those

This thinking is exactly the reason we're in the position we are in. The only seven step drop pass play we took and DC was raped. Now it's one thing if it was Baltimore. But it wasn't. It was the twenty ninth ranked Jets Defense. The chickens have come home to roost. The five years they scrimped and patched that hole with bailing wire is now in our face. The patch has been blown and the boat is sinking. We don't make plays because there is no longer the threat of a rushing attack. And if there is no threat of rushing the football, we have no play action pass. This offense is preditcated on the play action pass. We cannot rush the ball becasue we now have a street free agent at left tackle. A third rounder at right tackle, who for my money wasn't even supposed to take a snap this season because he wasn't ready, a center we got your way 5th rounder. Pitts has been our best lineman. For my money, we've already tried it your way. The results have been...lacking. I think it's time to try one my way. The irony in all of this is there should be no way DC survies. If he makes it the final games with out substaning a significant injury ti will be Godspell. So the DC bashers such as yourself will finnaly get to see what life is like on the other side. Enjoy Bradley. By God in my book, after three years of reading the b!@#$chin, you deserve what's coming.

Great post.

What else can he say about Eric ? I mean if Eric goes down...what's left? LOL the cupboard is truly very bare.

I told y'all that to assume Spencer would be ready by spring drills was a vast over estimation of the injury recovery time. I think this was the first signal to us that it's sevre . It looks like Joe Thomas will be heading to the desert. So the big question is are numbers 2, 3, and four worth a top five pick ? Do we sit on our hands another year and let four or five of those prospects sail off into the sunset. Do we wait and draft another Wand in the third. Yeah I know...we could get lucky and hit another Spencer. Uh huh. Know where I stand. As bad as everything else is on the team, lock down the anchor on your o-line first. There will always be another Sean Taylor or Leron Landry coming down the road. Always be a stud at RB. But a draft with this many prospects at OLT only comes around every twenty years or so. There's going to be a run on them. You can book that. Just hope we're not left on the dock watching them play for everyone else for the next ten years.

If we end up with the #1 again we need to trade down. I think most teams will know that we will want to because cannot afford it. I say go defense with the first round selection. Hopefully something in the secondary, but a killer OLB wouldn't be too bad.

If we can't trade it, I think you have got to go with Adrian Peterson or Joe Thomas.

I will be upset if we draft these positions in the first round: Wide receiver, Tight End, and Quarterback (unless we were going to release Carr, in which case I am in favor of drafting one in the first). We could really use a first rounder at all the other positions. Most significantly: Free Safety, Cornerback, Outside Linebacker, and Left Tackle.

I'm continually amazed at the demands to trade down. What about value? You're stupid and a justifiable laughing-stock if you trade out of the first few picks without fair value coming back. We couldn't get fair value last April, and we don't know if we can get it this next year.

The fact is that we don't have enough info to make the decision. Clearly we need help on the O-line, the secondary, and OLB. The simplest answer is take the best talent available at our spot (whereever it ends up being) in those areas, but you also have to consider the character and football IQ of the players, not simply athletic ability. You and I don't see the reports from the NFL's investigators on character issues, and we don't always get clear indication of Wonderlic results.

If the draft were held today...we would be 4rth 5th or 6th according to win loss record. I would trade down if we could get more draft choices in quality positions. If not, I would take the best athlete available. And I'm not too sure that we can beat Oakland just comparing the way both teams have been playing the last two games.

I'd like to take a cornerback or a really good OLB. At least we know what our problems are on defense. On offense, it's like WTF is going on?!? When you're averageing 2 ypc, I don't think a good RB is going to make much of a difference. And at the same time, it's hard to imagine one or two OL will make a difference either.

I'm more interested in getting a real Oline coach. Sherman just isn't cutting it. Anyway we can get Alex Gibbs? Boy wouldn't that be a dream come true!

that has nothing to do with the draft, its called injuries. We took two very good lineman last year and should get a few more this year, just not in the first round......

I agree, two years of selecting a lineman in the late first day (assuming we do again this year) should be a good investment into this line. With a couple more FA pick ups, it should be revamped, its just about learning the system.
