with the injury to peek, babin got in the jax game and produced 2 sacks...impressive. anyone believe that he can maintain consistency and be a productive end the rest of the way? ill say he finishes the season with 7 sacks. he has three now. if he gets to 7, will we finally believe that he was a worthy 1st round selection after trading all the picks we did to get him?

I don't know, Babin is hard to figure out. One game he looks really fast, with a great motor and shows flashes of dominance... And the next he looks like he's running in slow motion, getting pushed around. It's kind of frustrating to watch.

He thinks too much and waits to react to plays rather than making them. It too much of the old regime where Fangio wanted our D to be passive and react to the plays rather than disrupt them. He just needs to learn how to go all out like Peek, and Peek needs to learn how to be make smarter reads like Babin. I know its probably already been suggested, but any way we can combine the 2?

With the injuries to the d-line we're gonna need Babin to step up in a big way.

If he can become a solid contributor that would be one less spot we have to worry about...

Plus we can dangle him as trade bait at the end of the season:marionaner:

When he reacts on instinct rather than on what he sees, I could see him, Mario, Weaver, and Kalu being unstoppable. Unfortunately, the DTs probably won't do as well.

I really like what Kalu has brought to the team this year. He probably wouldn't be quite as effective if he had to play every down like he did earlier in his career, but that's the beauty of rotating the line.

As for Babin, I think he has the physical talent to excel, but he hasn't to this point. I'd be curious to hear what Kubiak's take on him is to this point in the season.

We are real short of players on the D-line. Payne out, TJ out, Peek 2-4 weeks and Mario's foot is looking like it's getting worse and that will be hard to play with. Two of our pass rush DE's have problems and two of our starting DTs gone for the season. That can't be good any way you want to count it. I look for our defense to regress a LOT from here on out. It's a shame as they were just starting to crank it up and do some good things.

We need that machine from The Fly. Stick 'um in one pod and have 'um come out another pod as one (with one contract too--save some money and a roster spot).

I was very impressed with Jason through the preseason, and the first three games. He was the only DLman getting pressure on the QB consistently. He was bullrushing Linemen, or beating them around the edge. He actually got two hits on McNabb, he got the one sack against Manning, and he pressured Brunnell quite a bit.

But our Coverage was so bad, McNabb, Manning, and Brunnell were able to dink & dunk us to death.

But in those games, Mario would come off the line, look for the run, then decide where the play was, where Babin would go for the QB everytime.

Now, Since Miami, looks like the role's been reversed, Mario is going for the QB first, Babin is looking for the play.

If we move Weaver back inside, and get some solid play from our tackles, JasonBabin should be OK. The secondary is looking a lot better with Faggins back there. Dunta should be concentrating on his responsibility. If Greenwood would step it up, then Jason can take a little more risk, and gamble every now & again.

I still think Babin's best position is what Capers drafted him to play
and that is an OLB in the 3-4. IMO, Jason is just not big enough to handle the running plays as a full-time 4-3 DE, and not quite as athletic as say Peek
so he proabaly can't earn his way as a pass rushing specialists.
Watching Babin as an OLB, he had very good range and pursuit to cover running plays for a guy who while not real big, still played at about 250-255 and he was fit and trim at that weight. And of course he is a descent edge rusher.
Babin is of course on record as preferring his old college position as a DE over playing backer, but IMO he will find his best opportunites to start and contribute more elsewhere with a 3-4 team.

Did anyone pick up on the fact that Smith or Kubiak or the Houston paper did not say anything about Babins 2 sacks. You would think of all the problems the texans have on getting pressure on the QB Kubiak would have been happy with Babins play. By the way this is Babins first year playing DE in the pros like everyone says pro is not same as college ball he also needs time to adjust after playing LB for 2 years, maybe not as much as a 1st year player but i think he needs a some time to adjust.

I think in the next few weeks, "VERSATILITY" will play a little bit of a role.

As much as moving Weaver back inside is against what Kubiak wants to do, I think we may see that in order to get Babin on the field, as well as getting Babin and Weaver together at the end position to spell Mario and his ailing foot.

If we move Weaver back inside, I wouldn't be surprised to see Orr play a little DE and have Wong (if healthy) on long pass plays (3rd and plus 10) for example. I see Williams sitting out a few more plays and trying to utilize a healthy Babin and Weaver to create pressure.

Our current set of DTs are fatties that will sit in the middle and sometimes plug a hole. Maddox has shown a decent motor, but Dalton to me hasn't been all that visible.

For those who were wondering where Babin has been the last couple of games, he was injured in the Dallas game, didn't play in the first Jax game due to that injury, and played only a few plays coming back from that injury during the Tenessee and got 2 tackles in the Giants games.

I think this last game was his first 100% game since Dallas

I think next year he'll be a good rotation DE after a season under his belt.
