Maurice Clarett

I am sure this topic has been duscussed before but does anyone have the slightest idea as to what happened with Maurice Claurret (sp)? WIll he get drafted next year? Will he be completely the biggest waste of oxygen on the planet? Or was he the man child who wasted the most talent ever.

I'm guessing early day 2, maybe late day 1. It won't suprise me to see the cowboys draft him. The tuna likes a big back, and JJ loves the pub. (seems like a perfect fit)

Would be a top 20 pick had he stayed in school. Now he is a round 3 flyer. Look for him to latch on to a team with a hurting run game, like The fins, or Arizona.

Ending six months of silence, former Ohio State running back Maurice Clarett has told ESPN The Magazine in this week's edition that he "took the fall" for the school during a 2003 NCAA investigation and that he's talking now because he wants to "clear his name" with National Football League owners and general managers.

Clarett says that while he was at Ohio State in 2002 and 2003 head coach Jim Tressel, as well as certain members of his staff and boosters, provided him with improper benefits. He says he covered up Tressel's improprieties during the NCAA investigation and afterward, Ohio State "blackballed'' him from the football program.

According to Clarett, Tressel arranged loaner cars for him and Tressel's brother, Dick, found him lucrative landscaping jobs that he did not even have to show up for. He says members of Tressel's staff also introduced him to boosters who'd slip him thousands of dollars, and the better he played, the more cash he'd receive. He says boosters eventually began inviting him into their homes or would meet him out in the community.

"When you'd leave, [the booster] sets you straight," Clarett told The Magazine. "They say, 'You got any money in your pocket?' They make sure your money's straight."

Clarett also says he likely would have been ineligible for Ohio State's national title season of 2002 if the football staff had not "aligned'' him with an academic advisor whose goal was simply to keep him eligible. He says the academic advisor enrolled him in Independent Study courses and also put him with hand-picked teachers who would pass him whether he attended their classes or not. He says his advisor also introduced him to a tutor who prepared outlines and told him what to write for assignments.

Another former Ohio State player, linebacker Marco Cooper (2000-01; Spring 2002), corroborated many of Clarett's comments. Cooper, who was suspended from the team following two arrests for drug possession, says he also had bogus landscaping jobs, that a booster helped furnish his apartment, and that he was able to borrow cars from local Columbus dealerships in exchange for signed OSU memorabilia.

Another former Buckeyes player, current Maryland running back Sammy Maldonado, says he was placed in so many courses that did not put him on the road to graduation that only 17 of a possible 40 credits earned would transfer to his new school.

Ohio State officials have declined to comment on many of the allegations. School President Karen Holbrook, Jim Tressel and Dick Tressel refused to respond through spokespersons, while Athletic Director Andy Geiger said he would not answer questions until after the magazine story appeared, if then.

Maurice Clarett says he received improper benefits during his time at Ohio State.

"We went through a yearlong investigation of our academic programs, everything that [Clarett] has to allege,'' Geiger said. "He vowed to me that he would do something to try to get us and this may be what he's trying to do. So he's on his own.

"We dealt with this guy [Clarett] for 18 months. I just hope you've checked into the background and history of who you're dealing with.''

Clarett's former academic advisor and tutor also declined comment. The NCAA, which investigated Clarett for potential academic and financial irregularities in the summer of 2003, said it is against its policy to discuss the Clarett case.

Clarett, 21, who gained 1,237 yards and scored 18 touchdowns in 2002, his only collegiate season, says he was asked during the 2003 NCAA investigation whether he received a loaner car from Tressel, and, to protect the coach, he says, he answered no. He says when he was asked about other indiscretions, he answered, "I don't know" or "I don't remember," which was a violation of NCAA Rule 10.1, requiring forthright answers.

"What would have become of Ohio State if I said everything?'' Clarett told The Magazine. "Half the team would have been suspended, and it would have been worse for everybody. I was like, 'Why don't I just take it?'"

The school suspended him for the entire 2003 season, and when Clarett asked to be reinstated for 2004, he says the athletic department systematically "blackballed him" by taking away the teachers and tutors.

Clarett then tried applying for the 2004 NFL Draft, and was first ruled eligible and then ineligible, because he wasn't the requisite three years removed from high school. He says he was "depressed" by the court's ultimate decision to ban him, but is now working out in anticipation of the 2005 draft in April. He says he is hoping this winter to play in this winter's East-West Shrine game and the Senior Bowl, all-star invitationals that would be his first football games in two years.

Several pro executives say, as of now, the running back could go as low as the fourth or fifth round. Clarett contends he will change any negative perceptions at the NFL combine in February.

"I'm thinking, 'NFL GMs know college players take money,' " Clarett says. "It was nothing like I stole something. Nothing like I'm running from the law or I'm dragging a girl down the stairs. No domestic violence. No nothing. [But] I got to clear myself up now, because it's affecting the minds of the GMs."

Sounds like pretty sordid stuff was going on at OSU....but I still find it difficult to believe MC. Now if he had caught all these financial improprieties on videotape, then there would be a really big story. :shocked

P.S. I'm a little bit biased against OSU in that I'm a Pennsylvania native (Pittsburgh).

Ok, let's see. A loaner car for free, A job you don't have to show up for, money any time you need it, a tutor to do school work for classes you do not have to attend but still pass, lie to the NCAA. All OSU's fault being blackballed, and everybody does it, so it's ok. "It was nothing like I stole something" How about the scholarship that could have gone to a kid who would go to school and learn something. My guess on the NFL, free agent if anybody calls after the draft.

The NFL is a business, can MC play in the NFL?Yes I think he can and will be drafted late 1st or early 2nd.
:BananaWav

I'm not saying him accepting everything was right, but I am saying he does make a case for himself if he is at last telling the truth. In my oppinion it does help his draft stock. However, only in the aspect that people see he wasn't asking for any of it or pressuring for it to happen...it was offered so he took it as wrong as it is.

If he really is working out like he says he is, I hope he shows up at the combine in great shape and running like he did when he played. It shows how much he wants it and how hard he is willing to work to get some credibility back. (I saw a picture of him at the interview and wondered if he looked like he'd lost a little weight since he is trying to get down to 5% and below body fat).

He has made some big mistakes and is being childish in blaming it all on OSU...but it does take a little of the guilt and negativity of his character off of himself.

I think this whole debacle could have been avoided. I think a player should be able to apply for the NFL draft at the age of 18. I hate to use the same reason but,

You can go to WAR at age 18. F-ing WAR. Age 18.

Besides this isnt the NBA. You can go straight to the NBA and make an impact with pure skill. But not in the NFL. You need skill/knowledge/experience, to make an impact.

Kids will still go to College for a couple of years. Make a name for themselves, and then get drafted.

So let MC go to the draft, and see what team wants to spend a draft pick on him. My gut says teams wont take a chance on him until the 4th round.

After reading this ESPN piece on Clarett, who else thinks the anonymous GM might very well be Texan GM Charley Casserly?

The lawsuit [against the NFL] in itself, that wouldn't bother me. What bothers me is the guy thinking he's good enough to play when he's got all these other issues. And here's the thing on the injury-prone. This guy, I don't think, has ever played a full season in high school or college without missing time. So here's a guy, durability's a question on him. Work ethic is a question on the guy. So those are two big questions.

Personally, I thought Clarett was an outstanding player as a freshman at OSU. He could run inside, break it outside, catch, block. Does anyone remember Clarett running down Sean Tayor on an interception in the BCS championship? Just a very solid, all around RB. But, not everyone belongs in college, and I think Clarett proved that to be true. I may be wrong, but I still think Clarett has a chance to be a very good NFL player.

I think he's got a chance to be a pretty good RB in the NFL too, and as far as being a 'head case' that could very well describe lots of players in the NFL. If someone can get him with a late 3rd or early 4th round pick it would be a steal. I think most GMs are more comfortable drafting a player if they've got more tape on him, and a better feel for his character. Clarrett doesn't have the luxury of having an abundance of game tape, and his character isn't looking too good right now either. Combine all that with the number of good young running backs that are in the draft, and he could end up a 2nd day pick. I'd expect him to have a very good combine since he'll have plenty of time to prepare for it, and that should make his stock rise a little bit.

We all know that somebody will take a flyer on this guy...i would not touch before the 4th round. If that talented guy is sitting there in the middle of 5th round even with his baggage that's the point where I say to myself he is more physically talented than anyone else available. That 5th round pick has about 1 in 4 or 5 chance of making the roster more than a year or two and if clarrett is anything but a model citizen he is gone with minimal downside risk.

Clarett doesn't have half the talent of Lawrence Phillips and I can guarantee the Rams regret using a 6th overall pick on him.

Sometimes there's just not much you can do with headcases. And Clarett is most certainly a head case.

I don't see how you can compare (in terms of crimes) Clarett to Phillips. Clarett did what, falsify a theft report? He's no Boy Scout. Phillips record of violence against women is sickening. They may both be "head cases", but Phillips' case is much more chronic and ruthless.

I compared them in terms of crime? Where?

Considering the amount of trouble Clarett found himself in after just one season of college ball, I would not risk using a draft pick in hopes that it doesn't continue. His talent doesn't warrant the risk.

Then what was your reasoning in linking them in the sentence? Clarett doesn't have Marshall Faulk's talent, either. Why choose Phillips if not to provide linkage to off the field behavior?

Because both are headcases. Is it not that obvious? I didn't say Clarett should be locked up behind bars (as Phillips should be right now) because it's irrelevent. He's still a headcase...which was my point.

I used Phillips as an example because he's one of the best examples of a player wasting his talent because he's a headcase. Clarett is another example.

That was the problem last year...he had all that time off school and ran his mouth about making it in the NFL as this great player and showed up out of shape and not even close to NFL or even top college quality. However, now he knows it's this year or no year so I think he will be in great shape as well.

I don't think the guy is a headcase. He did things by emotions, calling OSU liars, and was selfish (there are a lot of guys that are great players and don't have legal problems that are a little selfish) in taking advantage of what was given and offered him. However, the guy didn't break any laws worthy of being called a headcase. I'd term him more of an attitude problem. What I see though is a guy that if given a chance can prove he's a very good player without the problems ppl have exaggerated him to have.

I tend to look for the good in the situation and hope he does rebuild and redeem himself. ONLY if he changes his attitude as well.

He lied on a police report saying $10,000 worth of stuff was stolen from his car. That wasn't done out of emotion. My opinion of him being a headcase doesn't stem from one incident. Trouble just seems to follow the guy around. Coincidence? I think not.

Well me and Mo are from the same town(youngstown). I got to watch him absolutely dominate everyone on the HS level (my cousin even tried to tackle him in a game, it didnt work)

Besides being naieve enough to accept money from boosters and try to fix his image (by whatever means necesary), he's not a bad kid. There are probably 75 guys who have done worse things than him who are in the nfl now. If you want a good RB, draft Clarett. If you want a high quality guy, good luck trying to determine that. Clarett likes money, he will get that in the NFL. But I know some people who played with him at Harding HS, and they said he's the best teammate you can hope for. So you shouldn't make so many assumptions because he made some selfish decisions in the past year.

Clarett may lack character , be immature and a liar but none of that has a thing to do with playin football . Personaly i dont care for him but if he is available late day one or early day two I take a shot on the guy . He may have grown up over these many months away from football . There is No Doubt the guy has talent. The way the Texans struggle in the running game how could you go wrong by takin him , had he stayed in school he (barring injury) would most definately been an early round one pick .

Character hasnt won us many games round here , im sick'a hearin bout character and wanna see more WINS. There are MANY players who fall into the same catagory as MC and are hall of famers today . Lawrence Taylor come to mind ? How bout Ray Lewis ?( he might not be there Yet but he's headed in that direction , Murder Aquittal or no) Football is about hittin the guy across from you in the mouth ..... not bein MR. Nice Guy.

:hmmm:

Lawrence Phillips - 1,453 career rushing yards
Rashaan Salaam - 1,682 career rushing yards
Curtis Enis - 1,497 career rushing yards
Eric Bieniemy - 1,589 career rushing yards

Still think lack of character and maturity has nothing to do with playing football? All 4 of those guys had the same if not more ability than Clarett. None of them ever had an impact on the league. Why? Because they lacked character and maturity. These are 4 guys I think of when I think of Clarett.

On top of durability issues (hasn't played a healthy season since his Jr year in high school) and maybe having too much hype (is a 1,237 yard freshman season really that impressive...consider what Adrian Peterson did this year and get back to me), as well as all the extra negative baggage that comes with him (blowing off interviews at last year's combine, etc.), I have yet to see a reason to draft the guy.

But that's just me.

Speaking of character and head cases, did anyone catch Ricky Williams on CBSs "60 Minutes"? He says his announcing his retirement right at the start of the season had nothing to do with Miami's nose dive this year. What is scary is, I think he really believes it!!? Talk about being in La-La Land!

so how was he overhyped? he wasnt a heisman finalist, he wasnt first team all american. Where is this hype? is it bad that he put up 1,237 in one year (oh by the way, he didnt play in 2 games. so, yeah it was impressive, and no he wasn't hyped beyond what he did on the field

As I said...that's just me. I grew tired of the "Mr. Ohio" clips every 5 minutes on ESPN. I grew tired of the "Clarett would be a top 5 pick if he comes out now (after his freshman season)" post.

But again...that's just me.

Maybe I should just limit myself to watching his high school clips so I could get a really good idea about how he'd do against NFL competition.

I don't know, you seem to have something against him. The kid is pretty amazing, and if he wouldnt act like an a-hole sometimes, and got better advise (jim brown messed him up) he'd be ok. Give him a chance honestly. He did what a lot of underpriveleged kids would, he took money. It doesn't testify too much as to his character.

I can only say give him time. Believe me, he is one of the most hated men to ever come out of Youngstown, but everyone deserves a second chance

I don't have anything against Clarett. He's never done anything to me or to any of my family members. It's not personal.

I just don't buy into everything that's said about him. Again, I have yet to see anything special about the guy. What's so amazing about him? He hasn't done anything on or off the field that I haven't seen many times before. He averaged 112 yards per game his freshman season (11 games...1237 yards) and I'm supposed to roll over for that?

I do think he's a victim of having too many people in his ear (agents, Brown, etc) and having too much success (MNC his first year in college) too early. Having Lebron James as a close friend (high schooler going straight to the pros) probably didn't help either.

If you want to talk straight football skills...I think he's a second round/second day pick without the baggage. He doesn't run with patience. He doesn't have great vision. He doesn't have the burst needed at this level. His durability is a big question mark (couldn't finish an entire season the last two seasons he's played).

I don't feel he should be kept out of the league so I don't fall into "not giving him a second chance". I say let him in. But I'll be back when he proves me right. If I'm wrong, then I'll be here for that too. ;)

Being a Buckeye, I woyuld cry if he became a Texan

1) On field attitude: As long as he got the ball, made big plays, he was cool. The second he was taken out, fumbled, anything, he was on the sideline throwing his helmet, cussing, and taking up coach's time while they coddled him. And BAD.

2) Off the field: He's all bling bling and "my sh*t don't stink." Do you REALLY want a player who'll end up on trial his first or second year after being drafted?

3) Partying habits: I know LOTS of NFL players have them, but his were pretty public back home.

4)Target on his chest: After acting like a 12 year old (and don't give me that confused boy stuff- he knew everything he said and did, and did it all for personal gain), IMO we'll have a big, fat target painted on his chest. And I persoanlly hope he gets a non life threatening, career ending injury. He doesn't deserve to play.

Thats kinda harsh. I think the kid should get a chance to prove himself. I know a team will take a chance on him in the 4th or 5th round. And when I say I know, I really mean I think. :P

But he will have his work cut out for him his first year.

On ability alone he will get a shot with a team in the NFL , Period.
As is said before i dont like all his off the field baggage but he does have "First Roind Ability" there are few who doubt that . If you can pick up a player with that ability in the 3rd , 4th or 5th round you stand to lose Very Little and gain a whole hell of a lot . Yes it would be a gamble but then again almost every pick in the draft is a gamble , VERY FEW are Marque type or Impact Players coming outa college . Take him in the 4th or 5th round ,,,,, he flops what did you lose , a player who you most likely woulda cut to begin with. He shines , you look like a genuis .
I doubt he is there in the 4th round ... Willis McGahee (23rd overall in 2003) was thought to go in the 3rd or later considernig the injury he had to come back from , this cat is healthy and has the same type of ability .

Let me clarify something ..... Im NOT saying GO DRAFT Clarret , im saying he would be worth a look in the later rounds , After filling the other needs on the roster . Kinda like drafting Drew Henson , a 6th turns into a 3rd but a little more upside in this scenerio. :hmmm:

I agree with you. I think Clarett would be a very good compliment to Davis in the Texan backfield in that Clarett has the size & instincts to run inside in the zone blocking scheme. Actually, DD & Clarett could be used in the backfield together in 3rd & 3 type situations because both are good receivers. But let's get real, Casserly won't touch a guy with the notoriety of Clarett.

ESPN just reported Clarett ran a 4.67 40 yd at his pro day at his highschool. They didn't give numbers but said his agility tests were good.

Clarett may have just raised his stock from undrafted free agent to seventh rounder :heh: ...

Seriously though, the earliest I see him going is the sixth...If he goes before that, the team that picks him will incur some serious risk...

My guess is Clarett will be fine in the NFL. Like Lucky said above, he would be a good compliment to DD. If he is available in the 6th or 7th I would be all in favor of the Texans nabbing him for an incredibly cheap price in an area where you don't even expect the folks around him to make it on the team.

I agree Clarett is the type of low-risk, high-reward guy that we have proven to take in the past with the Drew Henson pick and to a lesser extent Jammal Lord...He should be fine in the NFL as the big knock on him is his character concerns, but I feel once he starts getting paid, he'll be a quiet guy in the lockerroom...

I think he will go in the 5th. Everyone knows he is worth a 6-7th round pick, so someone will jump the gun to get him in the 5th. JMHO

I would say a 4th would be fine. He couldn't be any worse than Wells.

i think it was best said on the espn interview with john clayton when he said that clarett was a cancer waiting to happen...right now everyone sees him giving his best just so he can get a job somewhere...once he gets his job and a little security in it the real clarett will show...i still don't like us picking him no matter what round...bobby purify was just as productive at times when he was healthy and he's not worth a 7th rounder
