Bill Simmons Eats Reggie/mario Crow!!!

GP

Go Texans!

The big mouth who so vehemently ripped the Texans for skipping over Bush has come clean and has this to say:

"We're now at the stage of the Mario Williams-Reggie Bush saga when every true Texan fan on the planet (A) knows that Reggie Bush is averaging only 2.6 yards per carry, and (B) had mentioned that to at least 10 of his friends in the past few days, accompanied by a line like, "Hey, maybe this worked out for the best!" And you know what? You might be right. Bush looks terrible. I know he's been a valuable decoy, but it doesn't explain why he's stutter-stepping behind the line on every rush. It looks like he spent the summer studying Thomas Jones' game films from his Arizona days. Step it up, Reggie."

Everybody loooooooooooooooves Mario now, don't dey?

I could care how we do for the rest of the season. As long as the status quo stays the same (Mario outproducing Reggie) I can say 2006 was a good year.

OK, well maybe I would like to win some more...so sue me.

why would the mods take it down if you have a quote and a path? If you had something taken down in the past it probably was a full reprint, subscription content, or didn't provide a path to the original work.

For the first time in a while we are starting to look like a respectable organization that just maybe was smarter then a lot of others come draft day. Now its time to back it up with some wins

Because I figured it was more under the NFL Forum.

I wanted everyone to see it before it got bumped to another forum.

You know Bill Simmons is more of a comedic writer than a serious one right?

Did you read what he wrote after the draft?

It wasn't comedy at all. I consider myself a prety good judge of what's comedy and what's not. Most of my posts include humor, or at least everyone's laughing at me for other reasons.

What he wrote was a scathing article about how the Texans had doomed themselves by skipping Reggie. It wasn't a passing comment. It was a full blown article about you, me, and other Texans fans who were/are forever linked to perhaps the worst draft day blunder in ALL of sports history. To him, this was bigger than Bowie going before Jordan.

He does write some funny stuff that's off-the-wall humorous. But what he wrote about us after the draft was something like calling him your mama a bunch of names and then throwing in some accusations of in-breeding while he's at it...and actually MEANING what he's saying, not just trying to be funny.

And now he's being man enough to say he was wrong.

He writes on ESPN Page 2. Fine, he may include some "serious" pieces, but for the most time he's humorous. Why just single him out though? Half the Texans fan base was against the passing of Reggie Bush (myself included). The entire media was against it. Houston's own sportswriters called in a giant blunder. Bill Simmons is one of my favorite writers and I love his stuff. After half a season, Mario is playing better than Reggie Bush. But why would Simmons admit he's wrong after 8 games? I know half the people on this board dislike him (this is at least the 3rd thread that's brought up something he said about the Texans) but why bash him?

Why bash him? I dunno, maybe because he bashed us. There's a good place to start.

Look, I enjoy his stuff to. But I can't say that I enjoy him singling out teams or players and then just relentlessly skewering them like he does. I enjoy his generalities about sports and what he thinks is good/bad/funny/etc. But he devoted an entire column to the world about how stupid we were/are. He ought to do an entire article on how pre-mature he was on his proclamation. That would be the most honorable thing to do, but it ain't gonna' happen.

It's kinda' like watching Kathy Griffin: She bashes Hollywood stars and makes fun of them and tells stroies about them. It was funny to me at first, and then when SHE got the same treatment from Jay Leno (face-to-face on his show) she teared up and said she can never go back there because she felt Jay Leno had violated her and had made fun of her on TV (about her appearance). She was thorwing herself the biggest pity party in her limo on the way out of Leno's show...she even said that Leno came up to her and aplogized, saying that he hoped she knew he was just joking...but she didn't care, she was a baby about it and said she could never go on his show again. She then said that's about the 100th show that she can no longer appear on. That's when I was like, "You know what? This is what YOU do for a living and yet you can't take what you dish out. Amazing."

Same for Billy Boy. He admitted he jumped too far off the Reggie Bush cliff. For that I acknowledge his manhood. But I want others here to see that the grief they endured from the whole stinkin' world over the Mario-Bush controversy has been well-worth it. And now we can say with certainty that the media was wrong and our team's personnel management was right in terms of what WE NEEDED FOR OUR TEAM.

I think that in our 2-6 record, we need to see that our team has been making good judgment calls thus far. It's important for us to see the fruits of their labor and their decision-making. It's important to see that we don't have to be all too worried about our 2-6 record right now. Our guys went against conventional wisdom and made what appears to be the best choice for our team.

You said you wanted Bush, and maybe you're angry at me for saying that someone (Bill Simmons) who shared your same viewpoint on Draft Day is eating crow today. Maybe it's a guilt-by-association problem that you're taking out on me.

All I know is that I am savoring the "Oops, my bad" that we're seeing from the media. For all they dished out on us up to this point...I'm enjoying them having the crow forced down their throat. That's the least they can do for the 24-7 Bush Is God broadcasts we had to endure up until this point.

I had a little conversation with some Reggie-lovers last night over the draft, and its hillarious how blind they are. Their main excuse for the 2.6 ypc was Reggie is getting all the attention from defense, more then Deuce, Joe Horn, Colston, etc, despite the fact he is yet to score a TD from scrimage and is, statisticaly, the worst running back in the league.

I think the same thing happened with RickyWilliams when he was a rookie.

Seriously.

Hmmm? What do you mean? I wasn't really following him much his rookie year. Were people trying to spin his performance?

His rookie year wasn't great but it was OK. he got 884 yards on the ground (but only a 3.5 yd average) and 28 catches for 172 yards and a 6.1 yd average. I'd never realized but he's a career 4 ypc guy.

First of all, Simmons is a Patriot homer. I used to like his columns as they were on the humorous side but he always had a way of praising Tom Brady and the Patriots in everything he wrote. I don't hate the Patriots. I just want a sports columnist to be unbiased. He deserves a "just shut up" award for being a relentless Red Sox/Patriots homer.

He deserves another one for already judging Bush. I hope we got the right guy and it sure looks like it now. But we were very critical of anyone bashing Mario, saying it's just his 1st year or his 1st 4 games, or whatever. Bush deserves the same amount of time to come around as all the other rookies.

I can't say anyone out of this years draft is a bust or who will have the better career. Simmons indicating he knows this makes him eligble for another "just shut up" award.

Stick to humor, Bill. That's all you're good at.

Every body knew Ricky was going to be the man.... & defenses concentrated on stopping him.......

He also played hurt, and missed several games as a rookie. Many, thought Ricky was a bust, especially after Haslette drafted Duece in the first round.

You'd have to have watched those games, Ricky looked less than ordinary his first 2 seasons.

But his third..... after they drafted Duece..... he looked Elite.... More big runs..... more amazing plays...

Reggie Might not shine until he is forced to be the guy...... I don't know how that will come about with all the weapons they have.

Thats the opposite of Reggie's situation. Reggie isnt the guy and he is supposed to be a completment to the offense, not the feature back. Obviously I expect Reggie to get better as his career develops, but so far, he has been bad, no other way to put it.

Sorry, I meant to add you're right. Ricky's situation was different from Reggies, as he performed much better than I remembered.

Had he not got hurt as a rookie, he would have rushed for 1000 yards easily. But he got hurt in both his rookie & sophomore seasons, and that's why the Saints thought they made a mistake....

Then they had Ditka...

Then they weren't nearly as talented as they are now as they were with Ricky Williams.

his rookie year, his QB's were Billy Joe Tolliver, and Billy Joe Hebert..... I think they had Ismael........ Quadry, not the good one.....

Bill Simmons is great, when one of his bone head comments turns out to be wrong (see Simmon's comments on Yao Ming) he always admits his mistakes. Simmons loves sports, but he is a comedy writer. :)
