Question about Kevin Kolb

Hervoyel

BUENO!
I'd like to know how many of you feel like Kolb might be a fit for the Texans and/or why he wouldn't be. It's just something I'm wondering about and I'd like to know what the rest of the posters on the board think about it. Is he a physical "fit" for what Kubiak does? Is there anything about him that would not work well here?

he'd be a good fit. good size, good mobility, throws just as well outside of the pocket as inside, good arm, good instincts...

Allow me.

At 6'-3" and 225 pounds, Kevin Kolb has the size to be an NFL QB. He is the smartest QB I have ever seen and is cool as a cucumber under pressure. Rarely makes bad decisions. He has 22 TDS this season and only 3 ints. The three interceptions have all been tipped balls off his receivers.

Not necessarily a fleet footed QB but avoids pressure and is a master at getting rid of the ball with a quick release. He also has a strong arm that will rifle the ball downfield.

He has outstanding character to boot.

I think Kolb will be a 1st round pick (late teens-early 20's). Here are a couple of big time throws from Kolb.

Threading the needle

Deep across the field

Kolb is in a typical gimmick college offense, so a smart team will sit him for a year or two. Physically, he has the tools NFL teams look for in a QB.

And another point about KK.

When the Coogs are on defense I will observe Kolb on the sidelines. He is very respectful of the coaches and his fellow teammates. Each time I see him on the sidelines he is going over details with the coaching staff and offensive team. If he and the receiver are not on the same page during a play, you will never see Kolb yelling at the receiver. It is always a two-way conversation trying to determine what went wrong, not who is to blame.

Kevin Kolb has what all quarterbacks should have,...leadership skills.

This Saturday will be Kevin's last home game at Robertson Stadium.
If you want to see him, kick-off is at 2:30 against #27 Tulsa.

I really don't think Kolb will be a 1st round pick at all, and I'm not even sure he will be a first-day pick. That has nothing to do with him as a QB, more of he plays for UofH.

I like Kolb, and wouldn't mind drafting him in the 4th to groom him. I think he will be a very good QB if allowed to develop.

the fact that he plays for houston is a moot point; scouts know how good he is. besides, it's not like he plays at some small technical school in montana. i imagine he'll be the first QB taken in the 2nd round.

I wouldn't be so generous with your projections. This year there are a lot of top talent QB's including Kolb. Unfortunatly for Kolb, he plays in a spread offense and will need to sit a year or two. Think Omar Jacobs when you think Kolb. Great size, great presence, great arm, great accuracy, quick release, great numbers, consistant...but they both are not ready for the NFL at draft time. Look for Kolb to go close to where Jacobs went.

that's not a good comparison at all. omar jacobs was a FIRST ROUNDER before he stunk it up during his injury-filled junior season. kolb's stock has only gotten higher this season. if jacobs played as well as he did during his sophomore compaign he would've been a 1st/2nd rounder.

Not counting juniors Kolb is in the top 5 of QB's coming out next year, that's at the most middle of the second round right now. It's about more than his playing ability, supply and demand if you will, and he won't make it to the third round undrafted.

I don't think he'll be a first round pick. I see him as a 2nd or 3rd rounder. I think we have bigger holes than QB to spend a 1st day draft pick on him (or any other QB). But heck, if we decide to go in a different direction, then I wouldn't mind seeing him drafted by us.

For the record I tend to agree with you TexanSam. My question was more of a "what if things go badly downhill with Carr from here on out?" kind of thing.

Also I have watched him a couple of times and I think Kolb could turn into a really good NFL QB. I just wondered what the rest of you thought.

I watched Kolb play once, and I came away impressed...

Good Size, Good arm, Poised....Good mobility....

I think he's successful at the next level...

Other than Brady Quinn, who are these top talent QBs? Stanton and Brohm have been disappointments. I think Kolb's athleticism & arm will put him in the top 3 or 4 QBs after the all star games, combine, and pro days. And 3 or 4 QBs are usually taken in the 1st round.

Some of the top QB's in no order:

Quinn, Brohm, Stanton, Henne, Leak, T Smith, Ainge if he comes out, Kolb. Thats just a quick, off the top of my head, list without actually looking for info.

From what I have seen from Kevin Kolb he seems like a QB who knows how to read defenses pretty well. He has the ability to make what seems like every throw and he also has the ability to run a little bit. Seems like a good fit with our rollouts and Kubiaks open mind in offensive playcalling. IMO he is a top QB prospect behind only Brady Quinn and Troy Smith. I think he would fit in well with our team but I don't think he will fit in well with our draft. He is likely to go off in the first 2 rounds, and I doubt we would take him in the 1st or even 2nd round unless we had completely given up on Carr at that point.

Kolb has been great in Briles' system. He would excel in a play-action....hey what do you know? Kubiak! system.

However he has yet to prove he can consistently play great in a pro system with a lot of pocket passing.

He has the size, arm strength, and is an underated athlete.

The only question is if his true talent is a little overated because he has been in Briles' system for 8 years....I don't think so.

In most preseason scouting list I saw, Kolb was a considered a 3rd round guy due to his high number of interceptions. Him having gotten that number way under control will only move him up the draft list. Nothing short of a major injury should move him back into the 2nd day.

TheHuddleReport has the QBs ranked like this:
Brady Quinn
Brian Brohm
Drew Stanton (who I see dropping further)
Troy Smith (considered a 2nd rounder, and a steal in my book there)
Jorden Palmer (overrated based on his brothers name)
Trent Edwards
Kevin Kolb (IMO the U of H offense hurts in the eyes of the scouts, but he will be a good one).

jordan palmer may be getting some credit due to his last name, but he's pretty damn good himself. 5th best QB in this draft sounds about right, give or take.

I agree. He was my dark horse QB entering the year. I haven't heard too much about him though.

Kolb has been one of the best quarterbacks I have seen play this season. I think the Texans should grab him in whatever round he is projected to be drafted in.

Man....I watched Kolb play once, and I think this guy is going to be good....

He has great pocket presence, a strong arm, and he has pretty good mobility...I loved his demeanor on the field...Everyone compares Quinn to Tom Brady, but this guy is the closest I've seen to him..demeanor wise....If the Texans grabbed him in the 4th I wouldn't complain in the slightest...

I'm a UTEP fan and I can tell you that he's slightly overrated. He has the arm strength and the size (6'5") that you want in a QB, but he's so inconsistent. He throws way too many interceptions and his confidence gets shaky at times when his team is down. He'll be drafted in the first day (maybe first 2 rounds), but he'll be a big work in progress. He's not exactly a genius when it comes to reading college defenses and the NFL is a whole different ball game. I wouldn't be surprised to be a Tony Romo-ish type of guy. He's a 2nd or 3rd stringer for 3 or 4 seasons until he's ready to take over. I don't know if Palmer will ever be a starting QB in the NFL, but I think he has the talent to do it. I think Kolb is the better QB.

Consistency is such a big factor in my scouting of quartbacks. I'll take your word, I have not seen him play, but inconsistency kills.

If we were to want to pull a Dave Ragone and grab QB in the 3rd-5th round area. I would have Kevin Kolb and Drew Tate up there. Add Tyler Palko from Pittsburgh to that list.

Kolb had 15 interceptions his junior year. His freshman and sophomore seasons, he had 6 ints each of those seasons. So far this year, he only has 3.

Good game rushing for the Cougars tonight in their 27-10 win over Tulsa. Kevin Kolb only needed a modest night of 16-21 for 244 yds, 1 TD and no interceptions.

Well if we did draft Kolb lets hope he does not bring that UH QB curse with him the last couple did not turn out so great. Plus he would have to play behind our line enough said there and also he plays in the Conference USA not to put down the Conference USA but it is not the BIG 12 or SEC, BIG East.

Is that Trent Edwards the Stanford QB?

If it is then that is a joke.

Stanford is horrible.

Unless this guy is in the exact situation Cutler was then this makes no sense. Seeing as Cutler at least led Vandy to a decent season, I would say overrated.

While CUSA is not in the BCS, KOLB is one of the top 5 QB's in the nation. And while Andre Ware and David Klingler never succeeded in the NFL, there have been plenty of non-BCS QB's come out with moderate success. ie, Steve McNair, Brett Farve, Ben Rostlenberger, Byron "Gary Coleman" Leftwich, Chad Pennington,....et. al.

So from what the UH Fans are saying, if Carr doesn't convince Kubiak he's the man we could be looking at Kolb in a Texans uniform? He's a Kubiak style QB?

Kolb had a less than stellar game today, 12-21, for 149 yds. 1 td 0 ints. He also rushed for a TD.

But Anthony Aldridge had 238 yards rushing and Jackie Battle had 115 yds rushing to vault the Coogs over SMU 37-27.

Rice's win over Tulsa means UH clinches the CUSA West Crown!!

GO COOGS!!!

Alridge has been nothing short of amazing. Talk about coming out of nowhere to burst on the scene...

I still have not seen Houston play this year and will start surfing some media takes and look over stats, but what is your evaluation of Kolb and Aldridge and how do you think they will scale in the NFL?

Kaiser, if all goes well, you will get one last chance to see Kolb and the Coogs at home when they host the CUSA Championship Game on December 1.

Anthony "Quick Six" Alridge has come on strong this season. He is the fastest player on the team and when he gets in the open field his world class speed will keep the defenders grasping air. Evidenced today by two 77 yard td runs.

He is 5'-9" 170 lbs. Similar in size to a guy like Warrick Dunn.
He is a junior this year and all signs point to him returning to UH for his senior season.

Kevin Kolb will be a very good NFL QB and will be among the first 5 qb's taken in the draft.

Hard to say. It's not like any of us here are professional scouts, but I feel he could fit in well with the Texans. I don't think we'll draft him (especially since he'll go in the 1st day, we have other priorities) but I think whoever does will be getting a very good QB. He plays in a gimmicky offense, it's not a pro-style (it's like Texas Tech's offense) but I think Kolb has the tools. I don't know how his arm strength is but he's accurate and he's mobile. I think he might be like a Drew Brees type player. He'll be drafted in the 2nd or 3rd round, take a few years to develop and mature, and if/when he's a starter he'll do a good job.

I was talkin ot my cousin about Kolb and he was sayin that if he's there in the 3rd round, it wouldn't be a bargain to get Kolb. I think Kolb is a good QB and will have his shot in the NFL, but I don't know if the Texans should draft him. The way I see it, if Kubes is going to draft a QB then why didn't we get Vince this past year, and trade David for some pics. I like David and think we should stick with him, but I semi understand the logic in drafting Kolb because David has been getting killed the first 5 years and we don't know how his body is going to stay in good shape.

Agreed. I havent seen him play. So I haven't a clue. Kubiack kept only two this year. I agree with the previous posted about the kid from Pittsburg. If the Texans do take a QB , It'll be someone on the cheap to stash away on the practice squad, just in case. After watching Freeman's preforamce against Texas, that guy has the chance to be the real deal. I have seen nothing from Carr that suggest his body has hit the wall. I too agree it's time to start shopping. I didn't like the spread offense guy last year. Don't like him this year. And won't like him next year. Just me. I'm still under impressed with Vick. When he's on he's on. When he's not he is putrid.
