Is it me or.... (Faggins)

Well, he managed to change my avatar for now. I think Buchannon must've really been stinking it up at corner.
 
I saw Scott make several good plays. I mean nothing great, but considering I didn't know he existed until today. :)

Yeah, he proved that he's worthy of starting: While making the tackle, he had the "big play" thought on his mind and he was going after the ball.

I noticed the entire defense stepped it up after that. How many passes did we bat down against Byron Sandwich toward the end of the game? A bunch of passes were knocked down--And I remember screaming at my TV all season long for our d line to...."Put your hands up! You ain't gettin' to the Qb, so try to bat it down!." Finally they played SMART.

The defense was just a different unit out there with Faggins helping Dunat to shut down the WRs.
 
Leftwhich definately helped us out today, missed a few open receivers and such, and his windmill delivery lets linemen knock more balls down. Anyway, great play from the D today, continued the first half dominance against the Cowboys. Now the question is, can we keep this up? Three straight road gams coming up, we better bring the D.

Yeah and their receivers had quite a few drops, but there were a lot of plays where the CBs were right on the receivers...

I don't remember seeing hardly any of that prior to today....i.e. both CBs had their guys covered...some semblance of balance of skill in the secondary can do wonders...
 
You have Wong, Faggins, and Peek back and add Scott, Simmons with everyone else stepping up and that D was lethal. I hope we can do that from here on out.
 
I liked what I saw from Simmons today more than Scott but Peek and Faggins were great contributors today. What a great difference they make.
 
IMO, there were several players that were key today in our good defensive play.

Peek made a huge difference at DE. Peek, Mario, and Kalu were getting consistent pressure on the QB and Peek made a big play stripping the ball from Taylor. As always, D. Ryans was all over the field.

Our secondary looked a lot better b/c Faggins played very good. He may not be a shutdown corner and may allow receivers to periodically catch the ball, but what I love is the fact that he is always looking for the ball and trying to make a play. If the receiver catches the ball, the play is not over...you should continue to give maximum effort and try to make a play.

So many times this season PBurnt and Sanders had great coverage on their receiver, but still gave up the play b/c they would not look for the ball or get their hands up to bat the ball down. Faggins did those things today and no one else has up to this point.

This makes me extremely happy b/c if Faggins can be as productive as he was today after being out of game action so long, I can only believe that he will continue to improve and make an impact throughout the season. The entire defense did a good job today.
 
On the other hand, Sanders had a horrible game today. Leftwich picked on him a lot and he had that pass interfernce on third down on an overthrown ball in the end zone. I still look for us to pick up a CB in the first round.
 
I was not a Faggans fan last year, but he's much better than Sanders/McCleon. He looked solid today and he did get the strip on Williams/Wilfork that Greenwood (IIRC) recovered.

It was also great to have Wong and Peek back.

Teams have been targeting Sanders all year (see T.O.'s TDs in Dallas.)
 
Got pressure on an overrated QB. Our secondary played pretty much like it had throughout the year. Trust me I watched them closely.

That is the same secondary (exception... Sanders and Earl) that made Brunell look like Joe Montana. I dont care how much you looked... they played better today. Whether it was due to us getting key players back off of injuries or for some other reason is yet to be determined.

They played better today. Dunta played better today. Leftwich played terrible but oh well.... take advantage when you can.
 
Leftwich played worse than "old Carr" today. Tripping over lineman, letting balls get batted down all over the place. At least I don't remember Carr ever being that unaccurate with his throws. :)

But yeah, Faggins can start over Sanders ASAP. I think Sanders sticks. He got beat in the n-zone pretty bad today, a ball he could have made a play on. (actually, he should have just let it go as the reciever wasn't going to catch it) There are times when you say, "hey, that's an unfair matchup", but that wasn't one of those times. He could have made a play there.
 
Faggins won me over with his after the game comments about his FF.....

He said that he noticed when the reciever would catch the ball and run he wouldn't secure it well....He said that next time he caught the ball he was going to try and strip it.....This is what I like to hear out of a player...
That he was actually adjusting and noticing habbits during the game....

That is something that can't really be taught....and to me that spoke volumes about what kind of player he is....
 
Our secondary clearly played better, but they were clearly helped by a poor day by Leftwich. There was a play in the second half where he had a WR (cannot remember who it was) open deep over the middle of the field. For some reason he threw the ball about 5 yards too far to his left. If he had thrown that ball even half-ass, it would have been 7.

This was my thoughts also...

The big question would be, Did we win because our D stepped up or did we win because the Jags O collapsed? Not taking anything away from a win, but I saw quite a few plays where Lefty had a WR open and made bad throws. All I kept saying was, we got away with one there. Before I knew it, I had said that many times during the game and my buddy probably got tired of hearing it.

So I guess if Mario gets a sack recorded, then we win....
 
I think we won because of a little of both...but who cares....every team needs a little luck now and then and we just happened to get some lucky breaks on Sunday...

That still doesn't take away from what our defense did...two FF....They stayed in Leftwhich's grill...We did alright against the run....We played well...
 
If the Jag WR hang onto more passes, it could have been much different. Lefty was off on his passing, but his WRs let him down also.

You can say that about any team anywhere....if such and such would have done this then yada yada yada.....

We played better period....

yes because once AGAIN he would not turn around and at least APPEAR to be playing the ball, it's a tuff spot be in but he has to learn what the refs look for and what they don't.
 
Here's the thing about the pass interference call:

Sanders is looking in the direction of the receiver, so he HAS to see that there is about two feet of real estate in the very corner of the end zone that the receiver has available to plant his feet if he's gonna' catch the ball.

Now, I am not saying that a "great" football player should think like I think. I fully understand that I am not in the NFL, so stay with me when I say what I'm about to say about Sanders' technique on that play.

Knowing that you have a receiver running out of real estate (literally a few feet before he's out of bounds) shouldn't something click in your mind--at that VERY moment--that you stop "covering" the receiver and you ought to turn your head and locate what MIGHT be a ball coming into the reach of you and the receiver?

I really could not understand why he didn't have the presence of mind to connect the dots. I mean, it's different if you are covering a receiver going down the field...you never really know if the ball is coming or not...but when you have a guy pinned, you ought to stop and turn around immediately--The receiver has just taken himself out of the play, and the ball Leftwich threw on that play was awful.
 
The secondary didn't any better, or any worse, than the games before. They just looked better because the front 7 played better.

But let's face it. Leftwich played like crap yesterday. Yeah, the front 7 got more pressure than previous games and at times, was responsible for the hurried and innaccurate throws.

But there were other times . .
 
when you look at this game trying to figure out how much of an impact petey had on the defense is hard to tell...our pass rush was good...not great but good enough to make a hobbled leftwich throw some bad throws...faggins is a huge upgrade over sanders though...no doubt about it...but how much more of an upgrade do we really need at corner...i still would like to see us pursue another top corner either in the draft or in FA to add some quality competition at the spot...not just for faggins but for dunta as well...i think his play has slipped a bit without having aaron glenn here and i think having somebody push him for his spot would only make him better

Yes, Leftwich was defiitely out of sync yesterday (ankle,maybe?), and Mario had a good comment about what effect it had on the Texans defense for the Jags to have to throw to try and catch up. A reporter told Mario that it looked like he played much more 'decisive' in the game and--Mario's response was his 'decision' making choices were greatly reduced when he didn't have to worry about the run--once the Jags offense became one dimensional in an effort to catch up, Mario said he didn't have to worry about as many "will they run this way, or that way, or..."
 
Faggins isn't ideal as a starting CB but he's along ways from being an embarrasment. Furthermore, he's a playmaker and a leader. It's nice to have those guys on the field. I think CB and FS are still glaring needs to be addressed this offseason. Petey is perfect as a 3rd corner. I disagree with the earlier comment about Earl. It's not that Brown was better than Earl, it's that we had a real FS on the field this week instead of two SS. Having Brown or Earl at SS is fine- it's who plays FS that's the issue back there, IMO.
