The "Third Quarter Disappearing Act"

We lose the close games because in the 3rd quarter 90% of the time its 3 and out for the Texans offense.
 
What is going on?

Do the Texans players realize that the 3rd Quarter is a very real part of the game eack week?

I have seen bad playcalling on the first possession.

I have seen a THIRTY FOUR YARD punt. We pay a guy THAT much money to punt the ball 34 yards? There's a guy in Dallas punting it 75 yards. I used to just skip over the Chad Stanley Sucks threads. Chalked it up to uneducated fans wanting something else to gripe about. Not anymore. Cut his rear.

I have seen arm tackles that allow big Jaguars plays to keep the chains moving.

I have seen TWO defenders make contact with a tiny running back and allow the tiny running back to get two extra yards and a first down.

I have seen the Texans punt on 4th and 1. Amazing. The crowd booed. It was a no-brainer move: You've lost momentum, Texans, and you might as well try and get it back by converting a new set of downs. Nope.

Talk about an entire team, from top to bottom, with no clue of how to BE successful and STAY successful. Bob McNair should be furious about this stuff. He should be all up in the coaching staff's grill about this 3rd Quarter ineptitude.

Can ANYBODY find me more than 1 or 2 examples of the Texans doing ANYTHING "big time" in the 3rd Quarter OF ANY GAME THIS SEASON? Let me help yo out: Don't waste your time trying to find it...it don't exist, bro.

The Texans played well in the first, second, and fourth quarter's this week, but I think they only managed about 30 yards in the third. I don't understand it. We haven't scored a point in the 3rd quarter this season. It's very odd and I hope it stops.
 
Who cares? We played well in the 4th...thas really what matters.
Give us all a break and let us enjoy the win.
 
Should the third quarter be the quarter of coaching adjustments? In other words, is it a reflection of coaches being able to make adjustments to the first half...I am not sure what the deal is, but do any of you folks feel that this is the case?

I enjoyed the win (Never said I didn't).

But a win, and playing well in the 4th doesn't negate the abismal play in the 3rd.

Sorry, but it's a pattern that is very disheartening to me. We're coming out of the locker room after halftime and sleepwalking. I don't even want to think about what happens if Fred Taylor doesn't fumble and the Jags score a TD at the end of the 3rd. Do you?

Congrats, Texans players: You found a way to get by. But you cannot keep shooting yourself in the foot for an entire quarter of football and regularly beat teams in the 4th.

It is what it is: We stink in the 3rd. It's gotta' stop if we want more wins.
 
I've noticed what your saying aswell...but TODAY its irrelevant...we held JAX to 7pts! Thas pretty dang good! Let's be HAPPY!:bananasplit:
 
Beggars can't be choosers. Not scoring in the 3rd quarter is easily forgotten when you score off 3 turnovers in the 4th against a pretty good defense. This is pretty much how we lost to Dallas last week, except we weren't a pretty good defense.
 
Upon further review....the Russian judge has deducted 30 points from the Texans score for lack of style in the third quarter. Subsequently, they have lost the game today and will start with a minus 3 points at the Tacks game.

Whats funny is David Carr noticed the same 3 and out problem in the third quarter, cuz he mentioned it in an interview after the game, so if the leader of the teams knows it, i would think he would try to avoid that same problem, but he is buyin into Kubiak's system which is what I like better, he doesnt want to force anything and get intercepted, or make a stupid mistake, so I would rather have him and the offense go 3 and out a couple times, then have him make a stupid mistake trying to force something and have it possibly changed the outcome of the game.....IM GLAD HE HAS DEVELOPED A LOT AS A QB THIS YEAR!!!
 
From the ESPN.com article on today's win:

"...Houston's third quarter woes continued as they have been outscored 48-0 in that quarter. But unlike last week in a 34-6 loss to Dallas in which they had a halftime lead, they didn't collapse after a tough third quarter.

"I got real emotional with the players and told them it was about the fight," Kubiak said. "I told them the only one who was going to save them was themselves. I told them to get out there and fight through this."

Kubiak addressed this situation (coming out flat in the 3rd Qtr.).

He basically told them they needed to have the desire to change things themselves. Told them HE isn't capable of helping them, that they have to help themselves.

That's nice to hear.
 
Hopefully, this is the turning point (one of many) in the organization. I believe it was said by the coach last week that the team will not move forward till they are able to build off of an opposing team's comeback and not have the "here we go again" attitude..... or something like that.

They showed it this game, a non-defeatist attitude. Two home game wins in a row (first time) and a "go for the throat" full game played. Keep it rollin' into Tennessee, Texans. Build off this win to start your road series well.
 
I liked Kubiak's post-game interviews. He gave praise where it was due, but he was all about figuring out our deficiencies and problems. One of the big concerns is taking care of business in the 3rd qtr.
 
It's not that big a deal, we were seconds from scoring a couple of games back when the quarter ended. It's just media overhype.
 
Disappearing act or just not on the field? The Jags had the ball for 12:01 in the 3rd quarter. We did not turn the ball over, we forced a fumble and all the while only allowing one TD in those 15 minutes. I will take that result any day given our lack of TOP - win, lose or draw.

It was a team win.

IMO, some of that had to do with the offense going 3 and out our first two possessions of the 3rd. That said, I'd take it every Sunday if it leads to a game like yesterday. Congrats to our Texans and our fans.:redtowel:

Bad plays are those that do not work.

The Dallas guy doesn't average 75 yards a punt my friend. He hit a bomb. Stanley hits them every once in a while as do most NFL punters. What you fail to mention and realize is that there are no returns after Stanley punts. His hang time is good and enables the cover men to get down and cover the punts. Other punters go for stats and bomb 50 and 60 yard punts, but the other team then returns those punts for 20 and 30 yards. Net punting has not been too horrible for Chad and it wasn't bad at all yesterday.

No question. Horrible first down given when the backup back for Jacksonville caught a third down pass five yards short of the sticks and went through two Texan defenders. The tackling was putrid in the third quarter.

The crowd is not always right. And they certainly were dead wrong for thinking the Texans were picking up a first down on fourth and short. They had a third and one and went backwards. They had a fourth and one from their own forty yard line with a lead. You don't go for it on fourth down on either occassion.


Talk about an entire team, from top to bottom, with no clue of how to BE successful and STAY successful. Bob McNair should be furious about this stuff. He should be all up in the coaching staff's grill about this 3rd Quarter ineptitude.
Obviously they do because they won the game going away. Coaches don't scheme for missed tackles. That is execution and it comes down to our players. Sanders got better and more physical as the game wore on. Overall our DBs didn't look like they wanted any part in tackling the Jacksonville Jags' backs. That's not coaching.

I would call holding off the Jags in the third quarter and not losing the lead big time. I would say that staying away from costly turnovers is big time. I would say hanging on to a halftime lead and expanding on it is big time. I would say that Sunday was EXTREMELY encouraging to see how our guys battled and played. You can nitpick about a win, but that is just sad.

Not mentioned by much of anyone is the Jaguars running left all game long. Now some may say that they found a weakness and went to it, but others might say that Mr. Mario had something to do with that. When they went to the right side, the Jags were stuffed. They ran a reverse that Mario sniffed out corectly, but just missed the angle on. They could not move him at all. This was very VERY encouraging to me. Once our DC figured out the deal, we started blitzing to the left side and this shut the Jags down completely in the run game. Nice adjustment by those coaches you want to hang.

Great game and great win against a quality team.
