ESPN: OL Rankings

Since I know you all hate ESPN, thought I would just add to the pile....

The Texans use pretty much the same blocking schemes as the Denver Broncos, where head coach Gary Kubiak came from. The Texans are trying to find or develop athletic linemen. This scheme requires the players to have time together and familiarity with one another, which, at this point, the Texans are lacking.

I thought the Bengals were a little high, and Atlanta is at 14. San Diego at 12, seemed surprising to me. Tennessee at 18. Cheifs at 19, also surprising

Basically it analyzes part of the Chicago-AZ game, and shows why they couldn't run.

It is an interesting case study because Edgerin James is a proven runner over a number of years, and it shows you what happens if even a few parts of your scheme or your o-line is messed up. Comments in the post are interesting too.

I am certainly not saying that our running backs are very talented but they are being hindered by the line, but rather it is an illustration of all the things that need to happen for a run play to work.

The line isn't much different than in previous years when we were a decent run blocking team. The biggest difference is the change of coaching. These coaches have them pass blocking better but are worse run blockers.
 
you dont win without a good, at least decent oline. they need to fix this next year and then worry about defense.
 
if it wasnt for our run blocking.. that ranking would be totally off base. But our run blocking is bad enough that it makes an average oline a terrible one.
 
IMO, the O-line talent is ....limited. However, the coaching staff has compensated for it by closing up the splits which helps the pass protection, but winds up making it harder to run. Harder to open holes up the middle when everyone is jammed together. I know the idea is to protect Carr (not a bad thing), but as the Denver WCO is predicated on a run first and then play action type of game, it seems a bit odd that they would do something that on the surface seems to be counter to what the expressed offense style is.
