Miami Brawl

That thing was brutal...I don't even know what to say. I'm expecting some serious fallout though for the playors/schools. Can't punish everyone of course or most of both teams would be gone...

Why not? Fight as a team, get suspended as a team - especially Miami. There needs to be stiff leason taught here, if not we'll end up a league full of Albert Haynesworths.
 
It was brutal I'll say that but it DEFINTIELY has put FIU on the map.

though it pains me to agree with you. i think he drops a few slots or maybe none at all.

taylor had more questionable issues coming out than merriweather has.

i mean the assumption for most now is if you draft a U player he's coming with baggage. Quite frankly the way our defense is playing right now he might be the attitude we need as sad as that is to say.

I might have been more pissed if he'd stayed on the sidelines while his brothers were in the middle of that.

It wouldn't bother me if it happened but I just don't see the NCAA or teams going that far.

If you have ever played sports on a competitive team and have truely given your full effort and every ounce of sweat and blood your body has to give, you would realize that Miami players did the right thing. I do not condone nor support fighting, but you act as a team. No player ever has to defend himself against a mass, brothers fight for each other. It's a bond that is developed and one that many people who aren't true sports fans will never be able to comprehend.

This is my football team's "team verse" (its a private school)

I'm not saying I support them in how they went about their actions, but God knows that I would have lost all respect for Miami if they had only stood on the sidelines and watched.

It's like in this movie...I can't think of the name of it, but its about football...alabama football I think. But anyways, there is a big fight on the field, some players stayed on the sidelines and didn't partake in the fight. The next day at practice, the coach called all the players who had been involved in the fight to step foward like they were going to run extra, but then he told all the other players to go home because they weren't part of the team and had faild their brothers on the field.
Moral: Defend your reputation only after you defend your brother.

Very well put. Have played sports all coaches teach is TEAM TEAM TEAM. I rather enjoyed their huddling it together after the brawl on the sideline with helmets raised. Nobody is condoning the brawl but you defend your family RIGHT OR WRONG. We'll sort the morals out later.

There is a fine line between supporting your team and acting like a thug. The huddle at the end of the game demonstrated that the Miami players were proud of their actions and happy with what they did. They should have been contrite, disspaointed with their actions, and apologetic. They should have been talking about how they should not have lost their cool on the football field and they regret their actions. What was really disgusting though was the former Miami player turned "announcer" that cheered his boys on in the fight. This is NOT the message we should be teaching kids. Solve your problems through words, not fists.

Miami has tried for the last 25 years or so to not be thought of as a bunch of thugs and this display simply reinforces that ideology. I like that FIU dropped two from their football team and suspended the others indefinitly. I would like every player involved in that incident:Miami and FIU to be suspended for the season. We need to make an example so this type of behavior does not continue.

So if the KU football team was in a fight you would cheer them on and jump for joy when one of your KU players took his helmet off and swung it at the oppoennt?

Or, would you be proud of your school, support your team, and be disgusted with the animal like behavior of the people representing you and your school?

My guess is that he used to play for Miami. It caught me off guard hearing him speak, it was unecessary and uncalled for. I knew Miami had some thug in them, but the anouncer too?! And for those of you not aware, Brandon Meriweather is #19 and the camera catches him stomping a player repetively. LaRon Landry anyone?

I agree about Landry there. If there wasn't such a mob involved he would probably be getting blasted for a Haynesworthy reaction. Instead it's look at as loyalty...no loyalty in stomping a guy while he is down. Or the guy that swung his helmet, or the guy that was injured and decided to use his crutch as some sort of club (Heard the crutch part on TV, haven't seen it myself).

I can understand the mentality of backing someone up and sorting out the details later (I've heard plenty of stories from my CJ professor who worked in corrections) but a line has to be drawn. This is just another black eye for Miami.

No, I would support the team and be pround that they fought as a team and stood up for each other. I would still hope for repercusions and I would still not condone fighting in football. I would still support my team but I would not support the actions taken. Basicly, your second option.

We are acting as if we are surprised. How could rational thinkers possibly be surprised? The surprise should be that we do not have more unbridled violence in our sports. We live in a culture that celebrates belligerence like we once celebrated religious holidays. Our kids play video games that make the FIU-Miami brawl look like a Sunday school picnic. We pack huge arenas to watch grotesque actors impersonate competitive athletes while bashing each other with metal folding chairs and throwing referees out of the rings. We allow our children to listen to song lyrics that call into question the most basic attributes of human decency. We pay millions of dollars to radio talk hawks, who pound away at the fabric of reason and diplomacy. Football fans believe it is their absolute right to scream obscenities into the faces of coaches, coaches' families, players and players' families. At one parent weekend my wife Carolyn attended at the University of Virginia, one of the quarterbacks' mothers asked as they stood on the sidelines, "Do you think these people will boo the quarterback's mom?"

Here is what must be done to prevent a continued slide into the ugly underside of human nature, and into the backward thinking of the foolish little metaphor above. Based on the tapes, fight participants can be placed rather easily into four categories:


1. Spontaneous: Players who instinctively responded to the first shot, who defended themselves, and then stayed above the fray. They should be commended.

2. Peacemakers: The ones who spent the entire time trying hard to break it up. They should be made captains.

3. The Serious Fighters: The ones who started, continued and took the fight to its conclusion. They should be suspended several games, the number of which should correlate to the damage they caused.

4. The Lethal Few: The ones who ran into the fray looking for someone to maim, the ones who hit people in the back of the head, stomped faces, necks, groins and any other unprotected part of defenseless opponents. They should be out for at least one year, perhaps for life, depending on whether they were successful in ending another career, which was their obvious intent. Lest you feel sorry for this group, don't. They are the sociopaths who do not wish to do anything by any rules. To them, there are no innocents, no one exempt from their wrath. If women and children are present, one gets the sense they would just at soon hit them as well. Trust me, this group understands one thing: utter banishment, including the loss of NFL opportunities. Put just one of these guys out of commission, and you probably prevent other similar scenarios in the future.

Of course he blamed music and video games, because there is no way it could have been teh players or coaching staff's faults.

And those saying that the Miami players were just defending themselves and acting out of togetherness make me sick. There is a huge f'in differecen between standing up for a teamate and assulting an opponent, watch a abseball brawl for what the proper behaviour is (that sounds really weird) And don't get me started on those who were kicking FIU players on the ground, those little bastards are nothing more then cowards. This has been coming all year, Miami decieded to do a little dance on teh mid feild logo at Louisville, and the Cardinals handle things like men, they beat Miami's ace up and down the feild. FIU isn't blameless either, but atleast there school as had teh balls to kick people off the team.

And Lamar Thomas deserved to get fired, you never encourage or approve of those actions from any team, much less your own.

The whole thing is sickening, as are some of the re-actions.

Totally disagree. His comments were unprofessional, and dangerous (to young men listening to his crap).
