The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

gtexan02

Working?
My thoughts on the game today:

The Good:
WE WON!
The pass rush! (5 sacks, and lots more hurries!)
Mario Williams!
Carr to AJ
Carr to Moulds
Carr's accuracy (22/29!)

The Bad:
Our running game
The fumbles
The playcalling at the end of the half

The Ugly:
Giving up 5 sacks :(
Tight Ends (0 receptions, were they blocking the whole game??)
Our backup OL (Hogdon + Salaam make me miss Flannagan and Spencer a lot)

Tight Ends (0 receptions, were they blocking the whole game??)

I think that Kubiak felt like we had a mismatch with our receivers and their secondary. AJ and Moulds combined for 170 or so receiving yards; I think we just got caught up in that mismatch. Also our TEs dont match up well against Miami's LB's (and Taylor).

I agree with all of this but it is so great as a fan to see the team get their first win of the season I could not care less about the bad and the ugly. The team has plenty of things to work on but for right now I am just enjoying the victory.

Mario is the man!!

5 sacks. J. Taylor stripped the ball as Carr was about to throw it. That wasn't a sack. Not good for us, but that wasn't a sack.

for some reason on sundays i cant start my own thread. mods are you behind this? anyway here is my review fits here about as good as anywhere.

earl starts the game with a sack. a blitz to start the game nice.

williams getting a little pressure early.

3 and out. the sack really killed that drive.

our ball. first down decent protection pitts has a little trouble with his man everyone else does good. 12 yards to aj.

dayne has good hole but runs up the back of blockers doesnt even look for hole. short gain.

carr sacked on a third down play. looks like hodgdon misses assignment.

2cnd series
looks like sanders who is faked out by ronnie brown for big gain

weaver makes nice stop to force 3rd and 3

mario almost gets sack on qb. mcnaab gets to outside first down

sanders gets beat deep ball overthrown

chambers gets first down on drob

weaver getting pressure on mcnaab twice. nice series by weaver

texans ball around the 10

hodgdon starts out getting beat on a run play. one of my favorite players isnt looking so hot to start the game.

gado is in doesnt have a lot of running room

carr fumbles weigart got beat carr could of steped up if he would have felt the pressure. half on weigart half carr.

weigart is getting beat consistantly. him and the running back get beat on one play getting car hit pretty good. carr stands in nicely and complete a long first down to aj.

carr is intercepted. all aj's fault. it wouldnt of mattered if carr looked the guy off or not. the rest of the wr's were going to the other side of the field. aj was the only guy around. aj didnt catch the ball cleanly and the guy made a good play.

end of first quarter.

Playcalling at the end of the first half was neither bad nor ugly, IMO.

It was a smart move because (1) We get the ball AGAIN for the start of the second half, and (2) There's no reason to get picked off (or fumble on a sack)and set up an easy Dolphins score before the half ends...which would mean that we would be starting the second half trying to make up points that we shouldn't have had to make up.

The playcalling at the end of the game, when we throw deep to AJ on a 2nd down was definitely ugly IMO. Stopped the clock and forced us into a long third down situation. I understand the "go for the jugular" mentality, but I felt that we should have either been committed to run-run-run and punt if we had to, or we should have been committed to doing whatever it took to get the first down, even if it meant risking a middle-of-the-field interception or a sack. It looked like Kubiak was conflicted on which path to take.

When there is 2+ minutes left in the half and you have 2 timeouts, you can't just sit on the ball and give the opposing offense another chance to score.

I agree. With the history the Texans have in losing the game at the last sec. (St. Louis 05 season) I think it was smart at the end of the half to take it easy and just get the ball back in the 3rd.

that is a sack.. it's also a tackle. a forced fumble is considered a tackle. a forced fumble of the QB who is intending to throw is a sack.

2cnd quarter

mario beats a running back clear path to the qb. quick pass for first down however. sanders on the coverage.

payne with a sack. texans blitz they actually picked it up pretty well. must of been good coverage down field. payne comes in late.

mario playing well already. powerful spin move. holding call on the play looked like mario made his man hold.

our ball
nice long drive by texans. i kept an eye on mckinney. he doesnt look to good on this drive. he did have one good block that led to a first down. but i saw him get physically beat on 3 occassions. between him and weigart or rt side of the line is pretty weak.

carr had a nice series. hes played well to this point.

if robinson ever makes the probowl it wont be because of his coverage skills. hes a solid all around db but he does get beat more than a probowl corner should.

i dont know why it took 3 losses before we decide to blitz consistantly. defense looks pretty solid to this point.

2 min before half. our ball. im not gonna watch this again. maybe kubiac wants it to much. you know when you want something so bad that your scared to do anything wrong, you dont want to mess it up. carr even made a coment in the preseason that one of the differeces was we would'nt play not to lose like we used to do. i hope this isnt texans football.

halftime

My assessment:

Good:
- Passing game looks great.
- Carr proves that he is probably the most durable QB in the NFL
- O-line showed signs of competence
- Defense showed that they can put on a competent rush
- There was a noticeable drop in penalties
- Mario finally getting his hands on an opposing QB

Bad:
- Fundamentals still were lacking, mostly making tackles. The first guy with his hand on the ball carrier needs to be able to bring him down.
- Secondary was still pitiful
- The inability to establish the running game is becoming troublesome
- They need more cowbell

All in all I am pleased. I knew I was due for one win over Miami this weekend. After my Coogs went down in a heartbreaking loss I figured the Texans would win. Every weekend at least one of my teams wins.

On an unrelated topic, I think that it was a good thing that the Astros went down. I'm a huge 'stros fan, but I believe that the Texan's bad season last year can be linked to the Astros World Series run. The Astros simply sucked all the available sports mojo the city had. With them gone there will be more available for the Texans and Rockets.

halftime

our ball
pitts is looking solid nice run and pass blocking.

3rd string lt tackle in and suprise! jason taylor beats him forces fumble.

carr didnt look good on this drive 2 bad passes but the fumble wasnt his fault. of course i was just waiting for or 3rd stringer to get beat. was i the only one who thought there should of been some help given to that guy playing against a probowl rusher. i saw that coming when salaam was going off the field.

robinson gets juked missed the tackle. last week he was the only one playing d. this week he is having some problems.

we sure are blitzing a lot. i like it.

score now is 6 to 3 i think..

our ball
not going well for carr to start the second half. at least 4 not so good passes.

i one of those who dont think rb are all that valuable. look what e. james is doing in arizona, nothing. an indy hasnt missed a beat. the offensive line makes or breaks your running game. that being said we need better backs than these there have been a couple of holes today and they arent finding them.

gado lit someone up on a blitz. maybe best texan hit ive seen this year. those with tivo dont watch the replay watch the actual play it was a collision.

poor drive by us thier ball

kalu with a nice play on d. nice series by defense.

if carr isnt the toughest qb in the league hes right there with leftwich and maybe a couple others. as many times as hes been sacked he stands their in the pocket in front of a heavy blitz and throws a beutiful strike downfield to moulds. all you carr haters need to look at this play. after what hes been through in five years here to make that type of play thats impressive to me.

end of third were at the one.

anthony weaver alert. thats right the second sack that was given to ryans and williams. weaver got there first. qb was already down when ryans and williams got to him.

williams got his first sack play before that one. this wasnt his best play of the day. he was playing good before this. this was just a gift from ryans i think.

williams came close to getting him again on 3rd. wouldnt that of been something.

good d texans.

someone help me. im a texans fan more than a football guru. are there offensive lineman who dont get beat for an entire game. pitts played the best of our lineman today but he still got beat at least 2 or 3 times. his man gets to carr this time and puts a lick on carr. not before carr got rid of it and aj comes down with it 40 or so yards later.

nice pass from carr to aj td

defense a little to soft late in the game.

kubiak cant watch last play. boy he wants this team to win. i like him.

defensive backs didnt look good today. rb not that impressive.

weaver, mario, ryans(just and educated guess), carr, aj. players of the game.

didnt see the safetys make to many bad plays

saw mcleon in the game alot. did brown play? i mainly focus on the lines, cant see the backfield much.

babin didnt do much. was peek inactive?

thats it. 2cnd week in a row i could post this on its own thread not sure why.

Calling a timeout when Miami was out of them with 47 seconds left was a little strange. The way our center/qb exchanges ahve been going this year, the less snaps the better. If the play clock was running down, so what? The 5 yards were not important. Never stop the clock with the lead when your opponent has no timeouts. A win is a win though!

I'm pretty sure we stopped the playcloc kwith 1 second left. Its a common manever to try and get the last seconds ticked off

You can always use more cowbell.
