Too many things to fix, what would be your first priority?

1) Defensive line - They need to start playing as a unit. Move as a unit and close the holes. Linemen are getting between them and opening crazy holes. We even have linemen murdering our LBs
 
defensive coaching.

i'm to the point on defense that i was at with capers' offense. i dont care if we get beat, but atleast give full effort. we cant get to the quarterback, so blitz 15 guys if you have to. sure we get flagged and probably give up an 80 yard pass, but atleast we're doing SOMETHING to fix the problem. hell, the worst thing that happens is we get the offense back on the field. also, i like the tampa cover 2, but we dont have the talent or cohesiveness to pull it off yet. man up and jam. buchannon should be back, and along with dunta are two of the most athletic cb's in the league ... remove the thought process from their game and let their feet play defense. tie greenwood to a tightend and let the rest go qb hunting. tell mario that he's not allowed to get a tackle unless the qb is the one with the ball ... remove his thought process and unleash him. i'm exaggerating of course, but i want to see steps in a much more radical direction than we've experienced the past 4 years. being the worst defense in the league in every possible way this year, the worst thing that could happen is we accidently stumble onto something that works for us.

I think we shouldn't have switched from the 3-4 if we were going to take Mario....He would be a perfect 3-4 DE....
 
Screw it lets get really crazy and bring old krusty Buddy Ryan to rebuild the defense and bring The House of Pain back to houston like he did with the Oilers!!!
 
Yep, the definsive unit - whether it's the coaching or the attitude. They were all excited with the switch to the 4-3 because they didn't have to read and react, they could just attack and pressure.... well.... where is it?

LOL, yup that's for sure. However, when have you ever head a DC say "We are going to play a passive defense". Sometimes I think they are delusional and actually think they are playing aggressive.
 
Offensive line play. Specifically, run blocking. Besides opening up the passing game, that controls the clock, which gives the D time to rest. It's a domino effect that begins in the trenches and works its way out.
 
defensive play callin, we need to blitz and blitz some more after that

and secondary is terrible, no one can tackle except for earl and robinson
 
I agree with oso. After the offense goes 3 and out so many times, the D has absolutely NO time to rest. Scoring on the first series isn't the end of the world. Its the second or third series that really counts. And with long drives for the Defense, followed by a quick 3 and out from the offense will KILL your entire defense. It's almost like they are doing another conditioning drill out there.
 
The running game would be my first priority. The Texans need to be able to run the ball. If it's the blocking I think they'll sort it out by mid-season and if it's lack of talent back there then I'd answer it with the draft (probably the first round).

If it's blocking then it's a harder problem to fix but with Spencer back (fingers crossed) and some more experience in the new system then I think it will come together. If it's RB talent then it's a quick fix. Draft Adrian Peterson and the problem is solved. Next problem?

I'm of the opinion that the defense is primarily a combination of experience (lack of) at key positions, coaching (again, lack of) from Richard Smith & Co., and some mediocre players in the secondary and at linebacker primarily. I think they get better as the season wears on but we're going to need at least one veteran player (I'm thinking CB) and a couple more starters out of the draft (FS and another LB) before we start to play right. The bodies are there on the DL, we're just not getting any production out of them. I'm not sure if our DL coach is getting it done.
 
First and foremost, we need a leader on this team, especially on Defense. After that, RB and FS are what Smith should be looking for.
 
Anything on D. Our line has not gelled, and are not getting pressure. The LB core looks pitiful with the exception of demeco. The secondary cant cover anyone.
 
to me...the pass is opening up the run for teams we play against. at least, that's the feeling i'm getting during the course of the game. i'd like to see the secondary sured up...somehow some way.

If we cannot stop the run, and cannot put pressure on the opposing QB, we will continue to make mediocre QBs look like the 2nd coming of Joe Montana.

Out of 60+ offensive plays, the Redskins only had ONE for a loss...when they kneeled to kill the clock at the end of the game.

The epitome of pathetic.
 
We need to have the Defensive coordinator attend all press conferences and explain his game time decisions.
 
Coaching philosophy/approach.

Kubiak promised us many things when he became HC, and one of those was finding ways to put players in situations they could excel at. IMO, he is not doing that. Why?

First, Gary has to coach the Texans from a 'development' stand point and not 'maintenance,' like he would if in Denver. In Denver, the offensive/defensive/special teams schemes were in place so they only required a 'tweak' or two here or there--not so in Houston. Here, we are still in the beginning stages of putting everything together, including schemes/player selection'player development/etc. In other words, we are a long way from being at the 'end' of the playbook like Denver.

Staying that,though, IMO the coaches are teaching more like we were in Denver's 'comfort zone,' and not the 'newbie' the Texans are. Mario is the best example of this--why in the world was he (or anyone else for that matter) thrown 'into the fire' and expected to-not only learn several positions at the same time, but do it with all-pro results. His demeanor on the field reflects that of someone who has been told several different ways to do things in the same scenario, depending on this or that...give me a break, let him learn/excel at one position before expecting him to become 'Superman."...geeezzzzzzzz

Many posters on the board have mentioned 'gelling,' so I don't have to define everything it means. Briefly, though, it is picking a group of starters to play together over a period of time to develope a 'chemistry' that translates into an effective unit on the field. Our issues on this 'concept' in the past were primarily related to the 'how much' time issue, not that playing together was not important.

Now, we have a 'revolving door' approach with the team alternating players and this is most 'telling' with the defensive line--though other positions,IMO, are affected,as well. How does this constant changing of lineman help to develop a 'cohesive' effective unit? It doesn't, and it surely doesn't help a players 'psyching,' and it just creates frustration. Now, if this were a 'veteran' unit, it might work but-obviously-it's not working here.

Cart before the horse? Is that what's happening here? Are the coaches expecting an end result that worked some where else for them, without putting in the time first?

Mental state. Attitude. Our players are human and know how bad their results on the field are, despite 'all' the work they've put in. IMO, it's time for Kubiak to use whatever 'talents' he has to 'find' ways to put our players in 'strength positions,' something he promised to do from the beginning.....

The fans know this is not going to be a 'quick' process to winning but-at the very least- the coaches need to step back and take it one game at a time, with a real 'focus' on player strength at this 'moment'-not 2 or 3 yrs 'down the road.':cowboy1:
 
I agree with many of you that say we need to cause some more confusion with our defense...More guys in the box blitzing, 7 if that's what it takes to stuff the run...I know we really don't have the personel and talent for that but I would rather get beat that way than sitting back in a prevent on the 30 yrd line and getting owned up the middle for a touchdown...Later in the game we get a 3rd and 21 and use the same prevent defense and give up a back breaking 1st down.

Spineless play calling at times and the players know it.
 
My analogy for what needs to be done is similar to what I thought I needed to do to repair my old Ford Bronco.

We need to pull this baby into the garage, jack up the radiator cap, and install a new truck under it.

My 1 thing....

The safeties!!!!!! The safeties are the last line of defense. When a team gives up a big play, it's usually because a safety screwed up somewhere. Wonder why we have givin up so many big ones? Because our safeties have been horrible. Remember Brown on McNabb's play fake? If you can stomach it, re-watch the Skins game. If you pay attention, you'll notice that the are taking terrible routes to the ballcarriers. I think both are liabilities in pass coverage. When they take such horrible pursuit angles as the last line of defense they get burned. Alot.
 
I would go for a stud SS with the first round pick and a decent to above average FS with the second round pick. Seahawks have Ken Hamlin ( 2003 2nd rd #10 and Michael Boulware ( 2004 2nd rd #21). Redskins - A. Archuleta and Sean Taylor , Etc....... I believe that your last line of defense should be 2 players that can punish opponets coming over the middle and thwart mid to passing attempts leaving the defense to cover the run and short passes. Our defense secondary is ineffective and our defense/team is only as good as its weakest link.
 
Everyone says that the D needs to "step it up". While I agree, I also think some better things need to happen on offence. For example, lets send in two plays to DC let him line up do one of his little dump offs or a run, then on the next play take a little page from Mannings book. Get up to the line and bark like a dog to drive the others offsides. One this gives us a chance to get yardage if the defence jumps offsides, two it gives DC time to think about the play and look over coverages. One thing I noticed was everytime another teams QB barked the calls, our defence showed them our coverage. So he knows who is coming and who is playing man or zone. Lets see DC do the same thing. And takes time off the clock. While a 53 yard pass is great, controlling the clock on some of these high powered offences should be taken into consideration. Thats my take anyways!!!!

One thing to fix.....

Put more points on the board. I'm not a smart man but it seems to me that at the end of the game, the team with the most points is considered the winner of the game. :rolleyes:
 
I am gonna stick with what I have said all along, pass coverage by the secondary. Any chance we could clone Dunta a couple of times?
