The "Well, we played a good team" excuse ends next week

Snapple

Waterboy
Next week, we play the 0-2 Redskins in Houston.

They have had major offensive problems both this week against the Cowboys and last week against the Vikings. If we cannot look good against the Redskins, particularly on defense, even with homefield advantage on our side, then we are officially among the bottomfeeders of the NFL once again.

Not that I didn't know we were a bad team before the first game, but I'd like to think we're at least a little better this year. Even if we don't BEAT the Redskins, if we're still in the game by the fourth quarter, which we haven't been during these first two routs, that'll at least be a small victory.

But yeah, the Redskins are average at best. So if we look bad again, I don't want to hear anymore excuses. And if we look good, maybe there's hope we can get 6 wins.

I HOPE we can rise to the occasion. Go Texans.:fans:

It's true, the Redskins and Dolphins are both a far cry from the Eagles and Colts. We've seen what we look like against good teams and now here come some, at best "average" teams to town. I'm a little nervous about these two games. We could just as easily be 2-2 as 0-4 at the bye week. A lot of people predicted upset wins and close games over the past couple of weeks but I think that everyone who had any idea what they were talking about knew that the odds heavily favored us being 0-2 at this point. I don't think anybody knows what's going to happen next.

To be fair to the Redskins, they've played Minnesota (very underated in my opinion) and Dallas (very good defense, despite their shortcomings on offense).

Clinton Portis has been sidelined the past two weeks and is expected back. They are a different team when they have a run game. Don't write this off as a gimme

teams write us off as gimmies not the other way around.

Agree with you 100%. I'm one that predicted wins, but that's the homer in me. The realist don't expect to see significant and consistent evidence of the new Texans till the later part of the season. 6-7 wins is a realistic expectation, while the homer in me wants it to be otherwise...

Well, I expect to score on them, but I don't see how the secondary stops anything. Unless the d-line gets to Brunell, this could be a shoot out.

Oh, I don't think it's a gimme. I think the Redskins are the favorites in this game. No game is a "gimme" for a team like ours. I'm just saying they're a couple tiers below the Eagles and Colts, so if we can't hang with the Redskins, we don't deserve to be called decent. Clinton Portis is good, and he may carry the Skins to somewhere around 8-8. But you can't wait for a team with zero stars to come along, because that team doesn't exist. As far as the league goes, they are average.

So if we look bad again, no more excuses.

I don't have a good feeling about the next game. So far we've looked terrible on both sides of the ball with sprinkles of encouraging play here and there, but nothing to get stoked about. We'll be playing a Joe Gibbs team with it's back to the wall facing an 0-3 start and the possible return of Clinton Portis, not to mention Santana Moss and Antwan Randal-El. They are 0-2 but they have played a couple of good teams as well and didn't get completely trounced like we did.

We'll be among the bottom feeder again if we have 4 wins in week 17. Anointing our season a failure in week 3 is a bit shortsighted.

If we can't be competitive in a single game through three weeks, then we are a bad team. It's one thing to be 0-2 while being competitive, it's another thing entirely to be routed on a weekly basis. Provide me with a counter example of a team that got destroyed the first three weeks in a row and still had a good season, because I don't think it exists.

Sure, luck means a lot in football. Not having a good quarterback is bad luck.

Oh Don how right you are!

Well, we haven't been "destroyed" 3 weeks in a row, but to provide you with examples;

Houston has started 2006 0-2, outscored 67-34

KC 2004 - started the season 0-3, outscored in 1st 2 games 62-41, finished 7-9

Washington 2001 - started 0-5, outscored 1st 2 games 67-3, finished 8-8

and finally....

Philly 2003 - started 0-2 being outscored 48-10, finished 12-4 and went to the NFC championship game.

And I'm sure there are lots more examples. 2 games does not a season make. Let Kubiak get this ship righted, will ya?

Okay, Philly was a good example. I concede that, so I was wrong.

We still have a ton of holes though. I still think next week is a gutcheck game, and if we still look bad, then we're probably actually bad.

I AM giving Kubiak time to right the ship, over the course of several years. It's everyone else who thinks we're supposed to be good right now for some reason. It's hard to climb out of the gutter overnight. Even the miracle Panthers when they had the worst record in the league took two years to get a winning record, not one.

I think the title of this thread is accurate. I must have read a hundred times how Philly and Indy are the best and may be in the super bowl, and how **** really smells like roses blah blah blah, well darn it i'm a Texan fan and I always expect them to win, that's what makes me a die hard.

If being die hard means that I have to close my eyes on the fact that Eli put up 247 and 371 yard passing games, Brandon Jacobs (backup) 87 yards rushing, Amani Toomer 178 yards recieving against who I ask you? The same two teams that we have played. No one can tell me Eli is better than Carr, Toomer than Moulds, or that our backs can't way outperfrom a guy who backs up Tiki Barber, add that with the fact that the Giants d was terrible yesterday, how did they manage to come out of it with a split?

Last year, every team we played early looked like a Super Bowl contender, including Buffalo and their Harvard QB. They weren't. Well, OK, Pittsburgh was descent :) but it could be that we just suck. It's happened before.

I don't think that Washington is as bad as everybody thinks they are. I'll continue to look for improvement.

These next to games are not gonna be easy dont let the 0-2 fool you. the skins and dolphins are good teams with solid and i mean solid defenses They both have monsters at DE and pretty good secondaries so we are gonna have to battle these next few weeks....if portis and springs are back its gonna be a tough one here at home.

The Redskins game is the first one that I actually feel we could have a realistic chance of winning.

Sound fundamentals and mistake-free football are the two areas that this staff needs to address this week. Go back to the beginning and teach these dudes how to avoid fumbling a snap, or how to protect the ball. If we can avoid giving the game away, we might have a fighting chance to win.

It won't be easy, but nothing is easy for a 2-14 team. We'll see what their hearts are made of with this week's game.

I hate to say it but Greg Williams is a blitz happy coordinator. Our center is nicked up, we don't have a LT, and our RT is really a RG in the NFL...this game is gonna get ugly fast I think. Circle the wagons.

It looks like the Washington and Miami games will be a little better because their offenses aren't as good as Philadelphia and Indy. Which should mean a low scoring game.

It looks like these games will be in play probably for the entire 4 quarters, and will provide a better evaluation of Carr's QB rating and completion %.

Didn't he also interview for the Texans job? He might be a little P.O.'d at the organization.

edit
So did Jerry Gray.

the skins looked horrible last night...if our secondary lets an over the hill Mark Brunell pick them apart, then we might not win a game this season....and I'm serious.

Playing the Skins should be like fighting a brick wall.

It's trickier than it looks, but at least it ain't kicking your ass. Unless you let it. Which I hope will not be the case.

And the fans have no patience.

I was contacted by some Eagles fans who asked me why Carr was getting booed during the Eagles game. And I explained how little good will he has left with most fans.

For there to be any home field advantage, the Texans will have to play perfect football. I'm not sure they have it in them to play perfect football.

To be honest, I have more faith that the Texans will rebound later in the year than I have that most of the fan base will be reasonable at all.

The Redskins haven't shown much this season, but I am sure they are looking to get shined up playing the Texans.

Texans_Chick, it would be nice if you were as critical of the players performance on the field as you are for the fans in the stands.

I was at the Eagles, in the Bull Pen, and I don't really recall hearing a lot boos. Then again, I had been drinking heavily for 24 hours and only had a few hours sleep the previous two nights.

Maybe you shouldn't characterize a few fans critical of Carr into one group. I am very critical of Carr and I didn't boo him week 1. Actually, I was very excited after that first drive.

As for faith in the Texans rebounding, what do you mean by that? I think a rebound would be 4 victories because right now, 2-14 looks about right for this team.

I guess your entire posting really irks me.

Maybe you should spend more time covering the team than hanging out with the fans on a message board if you really believe the way you do.

As for those Eagle fans inquiries, where do you think the Boo Bird reference came from?

Please note, I don't think it is a good idea for fan to boo their own team. However, as bad as this team is, if someone takes time out of their life to go to Reliant, much less spend the money, they can boo whoever they want in my opinion even though I wouldn't do it myself. As bad as this team is, I don't think we should be critical of any fans and their behavior unless they breaking laws or rules at Reliant Stadium.

This team blows!

We've played two really good teams and got our butt's handed to us. She would be crucified if she started wholesale negative criticism of players in her blogs at this point.

And where would she start? The ENTIRE team sucks. Sure, a couple of individual players look 'alright' (must be quantified), but overall, WE ARE THE WORST TEAM IN FOOTBALL RIGHT NOW.

But at least the team has a reason to suck. They sucked last year. We've got a whole new coaching staff. We've had massive player turnover. All these things contribute to the building process, and it always starts off ugly.

The fans, on the other hand, have been nothing short of impatient and stupid. Not all, of course. And probably not even a majority of fans. But the ones belly-aching and moaning, and yes booing, deserve to be called out.

I heard the boos. I heard the insults thrown out, too. Stuff that people should be ashamed to yell in public, much less with kids around (and I'd be sucker punching some drunk idiot if my child was at the game). Vulgarity has no place in the stands when young children are attending.

I'm doing defending Houston sports fans. There are hardcore groups - very small in number - that wholeheartedly support our hometown teams through thick and thin. But for the most part, Houston sports fans are fairweather fans. Everyone supports the winners...that's easy. But last year, I could probably count less than 5,000 fans in the second half of some of those home games. The team could have moved the games into the practice bubble with all the remaining fans, and there would still be seats leftover.

Sure, fans have the 'right' to boo. But as a fan myself, I've got the 'right' to call them out, too. And that is what I'm going to do. :howdy:

DB, I was merely replying to Texans_Chick's point of booing, she didn't mention anything about vulgarities or other unlawful activities.

Since you brought up some other things, I agree with you on the vulgarity thing. That isn't cool in Houston.

But, the fans have a right to be upset and display it accordingly because of how bad this team is, that is just my opinion.

If people want to boo, put bags on their heads, leave early, or other things within the norm, I don't have a problem with it because of where this team is. This team deserves it and the players should be embarrased that they play so badly there own fans can't follow them blindly.

That is all I am saying.

I am completely disgusted by the play of this team.

I know, bro', and I wasn't meaning to call you out (hope it wasn't taken that way).

But just two games into the Kubiak era, it is a bit premature to jump ship, IMHO.

If you had asked me before the season, I'd have said that we'll probably lose against the Eagles and Colts. They are both teams that a case could be made for Superbowl contenders.

Sure, HOW we lost can be analyzed and criticized, but this process must be balanced with the facts that we are basically starting over from scratch this year.

I think it's frustration driven, for the most part. I can understand that angle, but I just don't let an entertainment source lead me down the path of negative emotions. Life is too short to dwell on things you have absolutely no control over, so I just keep my expectations real and have a good time in spite of it all.

This week will be a big test and indication of the team's direction, IMO. Washington probably isn't as bad as their record indicates, but they are obviously a team that doesn't have all the pieces of their puzzle put together, either. I honestly hope that Kubiak & Co. take this opportunity to focus on fundamentals, especially playing smart and protecting the ball (avoid turnovers!).

And if I'm reading you right, shooting ourselves in the foot is probably the source of your own disgust. We are bad enough without giving games away with our stupid mistakes.

I am not a boo bird, and typically don't agree with it. But, considering last year and how this season has started, I can't blame anyone for booing at Reliant. I wouldn't do it, but I understand where people are at and everyone deals with everything differently.

Yeah, I think Washington will be a really good game to see where this team is at (this is really gut check time). I think (actually, I really hope) our defense plays better this game and it will probably be a low to medium scoring game (high teens to low twenties). Which means our offense should have several opportunities to get their shots to lead or win the game. Then we will see if Carr's QB rating and competion % are of real value to this team.

At this point, the Giants are just a hands down better TEAM than we are. They've been together under the same coach for a few years, they've bought into the system and it's working. Their offensive line is good and has been working together as a unit for a few years. They've got some offensive weapons... and after 3 quarters of that game against the Eagles, they were down further than we were.

The Eagles just let up at the end. They didn't go for the kill and they made mental mistakes. They let the Giants back into the game and the G-men were waiting for the opening.

I suspect we will get our butts handed to us again by the Skins. They think/expected to be a playoff team and if they go 0-3, they can pretty much kiss that goodby and add to that that they just lost to Dullazz and they will not be happy campers and will be very motivated.

This team blows!

I go to the games.

I listen to talk radio.

I receive lots of comments on the blog, some sane and some donkey braying.

I read everything written on the team, including a lot of the silly stuff on the MB.

I don't think that in my blog I've said everything is shiny, happy and new. In fact, I think I referred to the Colts loss as the Colts "buttocks rendering" the Texans, as I was trying to come up with a term worse than *** kicking.

And talked about a "catastrophic and complete failure of the Texans defense."

Literally, had had nothing good to say about any part of the Texans team. I didn't call out any one of the Texans players because I think most of the play stunk. I know some people have their favorite whipping boys on the team, but the fact is that nobody on the team looked great. Basically, my short point of view is that there was minor signs of life on the offense, and that the defense stunk on ice.

That being said, I also understand who we played, that we have a new offense/defense, that we have a young team, etc. I also have more patience than a three year old.

The Texans have stunk in two games. Because I believe that there is so little good will left for David Carr, if anything bad happens during the game on offense, I expect for booing to come in force. I expect that the stands will be missing even more people than missed the last game.

It took a while before Capers got his booing, but Kubiak is gonna get it right away because he used up a lot of his good will getting the player he wanted in the draft. Fans are sick of rebuilding and want to see mistake-free football--the problem is that mistake-free football is rare--that even good teams look boneheaded at times. (The Texans have shown a lot of boneheadedness in the last two games, but the boobirds came out in the Eagles game at the first boneheaded stuff).

As for rebounding, I think if the team can survive with any shred of confidence and fan support out of the early part of the season, I think there are some wins to come once they get more used to playing together and understanding the system. I have more confidence in the offense this way than the defense, assuming that the line and the running game can come together.

In other words, from my original post, I think the fans will quit on the Texans faster than the Texans will quit on themselves. Not all fans, of course, but a goodly portion of them.
