We've read all of the bashing of the Texans for Game No. 1, but I ask, is there still optimism out there for this season?
I just watched the first drive against Philly on my DVR and I got chills again. I think they will respond...you've got to admit, their schedule is no cupcake.
I for one, am optimistic and will remain that way. GO TEXANS!

This sounds eerily like Dom Capers saying that when you lose like this you have to look yourself in the mirror and see how you will respond to this.

J/K I think they will to but I have a feeling that it will be over looked by yet another L.

We have a lot to be optimistic about...Even though Mario didn't play as well as I expected he played pretty good considering all things...I was actually impressed with Carr...We were in the game with a pretty good team untill the fourth quater...We have a lot to work on, and we have the right building blocks in place to build upon...

Absolutely, if David didn't go out of bounds on that 3rd down, we'd be talking about how David put this team on his shoulders.... no doubt we'd have gotten a defensive stop, and antoher score.

Next Week I hope to see Babin play opposite Mario with the first team. & Mario as a DE for the majority of the game.

We also need to see our LBs play the screen a lot better. I doubt Addai & Rhodes will burn us like WB did(can you believe an all pro QB kept checking down to his little dump off)....... But Dallas Clark.....

Our Safeties & LBs need to step up their coverages. Actually our Corners as well.

Unlike last year's season opener, the Texans were not blown out in a game where they had no hope to ever hang with the opposing team. This in itself is an improvement. Carr looked better. Houston did something they weren't able to do last season, which is consistently hit wide receivers. Moulds is night-and-day different from Bradford. The TE was used. Demeco looked great. I don't think last year I ever said of one player in the front defensive seven, "x looked great and really dominated the field." So change is in the air. The Texans are a million miles from where they were last year. I just think we're still a long way from seeing positive results.

The ironic thing is that our passing attack looked average but our rushing attack went by the wayside. That is totally flip-flopped from previous years.

We still have no semblance of a pass-rush on defense and have difficulty stopping the run. But otherwise our defense was good. :hunter:

I'm not sure why but it seems like there isn't much excitement leading up to the colts game...Are people conceding defeat ? I know it's a long shot but I think we can win every game now...Not that we will go undefeated, but unlike last year where I just knew we were going to lose, this year I actually believe that we can upset some people...

Yes, I did see improvement:

(1) Fewer penalties...much improved over years past both preseason and Sunday.

(2) AJ actually saw "man" coverage again...picking up Moulds was a definate improvement over Gaffney

(3) Carr, with the exception of two plays, look more comfortable (more like he did in '04), did not stare down his primary receiver etc...

Most people felt that if we couldn't beat the Eagles, then we can't beat the Colts. I, however, feel that the Eagles will win the NFC East and that we will beat the Colts. We shocked the Eagles in the first and Indy's run defense isn't nearly as good as the Eagles is so I'm predicting it won't get shut down this game. Also, the DL won't have have to focus on controlling gaps for Peyton to run through on passing downs, they can just recklessly (Sorta) go at him.

I was very impressed with Carr and the passing game. Before you Carr haters flip out over the first sentence, hear me out.

Noone should have had unrealistic expectations of Carr having a flawless game. He is not going to go from "The previous coaching staff messed with his head so bad that his career is ruined" to a great QB in just one offseason. I was impressed by Carr's ability to spread the ball around. In previous seasons it always seemed as if he would look towards AJ then dump it off the DD, in Sunday's game Carr had 18 completions - 6 to AJ, 6 to Moulds, and six to the rest of the team. With our top 2 receivers being as good as they are - I like that ratio.

I gained lots of respect for Kubiak's coaching ability and got excited thinking about the offense once with we get our running game down.

I don't know, man...but I never felt like we were in the game in the second half. Our offense had the ball less than 9 minutes of that half, and IIRC, our three possessions were punt / punt / downs. Maybe we were still in the game score-wise, but I just never had the sense that we were going to bust out with a come-from-behind victory.

The positives I take from the game is Moulds is a great acquisition and will be one of our most valuable players, Ryans is simply a beast and brings it every play, and Carr can be a serviceable QB (at least as good as a Trent Dilfer kind of way).

I agree, though, that we have a lot to be optimistic about. No need to get down on the Kubiak era this early in the game. It would serve no purpose, because he'll be here at least four seasons (or longer).

Yeah I meant score wise...We were in it all the way untill our last offensive series...True they're play wasn't inspiring, but football is so much better when you have a team that you actually think can win...

I think Carr is better than Dilfer...But this offense is designed for mobile, servieable QB's so I truly expect Carr to shine...

My biggest concern is there is too much "caperism" in our first game scenario.

1) Kubiak said the Texans would do whatever it took to win.
2) Kubiak said it was his job to put players in situations they could excel at.
3) kubiak said the best players would play.
4) Kubiak said all phases of the game would be aggressive.

Things we were hoping not to see
1) getting a lead and sitting on it
2) playing the game close-'you don't score, we won't score'
3) counting on the 4th qtr to get back in the game
4) finding something that worked (Carr/passing on the 1st drive-blitzing in the pre-season) and not doing it again
5) sticking with things/schemes that aren't working
6) passive play calling
7) using the TE for almost 100% blocking
8) constant pressure on Carr
9) unable to put pressure on the opposing QB
10) unable to stop the run
11) no game time adjustments
12) weak game plan

IMO, there was too much of the 'old' and very little of the 'new' in this game, and this thought only got worse as the game went along. Where was all the 'whatever it takes to win' game plan? Where were the 'game time' adjustments to fix what was not working? Where was the agressiveness? Where was the attacking?

I can accept losing, just not like last year anymore, as we 'progress' with everything new. We gave Capers a 'long leash' and we NEVER questioned his broken promises until it was too late. Would it have helped to hold him accountable sooner than later? I don't know but I do know ignoring the 'warning signs' did not work either.

IMO, we need to listen to Kubiak and be 'wary' of what he promises and what we see on the field and question him about 'what happened?' For example, in pre-season, we were 'all over' the opposing QB with blitzes every where and thought-finally-we found our pressure 'solution.' But no. Everything changes in our 1st game--zero blitzing, zero pressure, and ultimate disaster...Then, out of the 'blue,' Kubiak says in his post game comments that he doesn't want to blitz. He wants the 'front four' to apply whatever pressure is needed. HELL-O! Where did this thought all of a sudden come from? Has Manning read this yet? Well, surprise surprise, it didn't work as our 4 could not beat their 6-7.

And, to make it worse, we NEVER made any adjustments.

OK, enough ranting, as I'm sure I'm probally the only one concerned here and-with time- everything will get 'all better.' I wonder if I could put 'time/better' in a bottle and sell it?:twocents: :lightbulb:

Go Texans!
We were not in the game at all in the second half.

They adjusted at half and kicked our rears the rest of the game.

Thinking we have a chance against Indy is foolish. I like the rah-rah! just as weell as others, but it won't secure a victory.

We're an 8-8 team at best. Me thinks that the preseason has misled us. Perhaps we cared more about making a good showing in the preseason than the teams we played...because we looked 100% opposite of how we looked in preseason.

Granted, the opening drive was a thing of beauty. But we've got to do that all game long. You honestly THINK we can hang with Peyton for an entire game? I don't.

Drink some Kool-Aid Its helped me. If our Def. shows up I think we compeat and keep it not close but .......within reason. We have played Indy. though in the past.

I saw improvement. I thought our offensive playcalling was better. DC and his receivers played better than in the past. Our defense was piss poor, just like last year. Our offensive line looked better overall in pass protection, but only marginally. Our run blocking looked horrendous, not sure if it was us playing poorly or the Eagles just punching us in the mouth. Our defensive front 7 still can't generate pressure on the QB, and that's the biggest disappointment for me. We went out and acquired 2 new players for our DL, and switched to a 4-3 front and we looked effectively the same to me. I hope Richard Smith can come up with a way to get to the QB, and I hope Mario will give us a glimmer of his potential. I don't need a 3 sack game, I just need to see the quarterback rushing his throws from time to time, or maybe running in fear from our 1st rounder.

I think we are headed in the right direction, but we have a long way to go. There is no way we will have a winning record this year. But even 6 or 7 wins will be a big improvement.

I was a little frustrated that quite a few people sitting around me Sunday were basically dogging Carr and the whole team the entire game. Apparently they think we should be playoff bound this year. After a 2-14 season it is unrealistic to expect miracles the very next season.

That game was more entertaining then any last year. I hope we get better. My state of mind cannot handle another 2-14 season. I was so excited for the season to start that I could not sleep th enight before. Then I just ended up very tired with a headach. Come on Kubes lets get this thing together.

Are you serious?? you can't score on every down, and the Eagles didn't in the second half. Looked like our defense got wore out(which I don't understand with the front 4 rotation), but from where I was sitting(608, Row P) it looked like Carr got that first down & the tide was turning.

I still believe if we'd have picked up that 1st, we'd have gone on to win the game.

the air and excitement will continue to come of of the balloon until they win some games. Right now all we can see are losses and all we remember are losses. this has been a rough stretch since the final couple of games in 2004.

Wha....? Score on every down? How about score on ANY drive in the entire second half?!

And the Eagles DID score in the second half (10 points), so I'm not sure what you're saying with "the Eagles didn't in the second half." idonno:

Of course our defense was worn out. They played for over 21 minutes of a 30 minute half! This indicates that our offense was unable to maintain control, unable to get CONSISTENT first downs, and simply unable to put themselves in a position to even kick a FG.

You can believe whatever you want, but that doesn't make it real. There was nothing inspired about our team in the second half, and nothing led me to believe that they could come-from-behind against a good Eagles team.

I'm saying they didn't score on every drive of the second half, just like they didn't score on every drive of the first half.

& we were in scoring position when we went for it with 9 minutes left in the 4th Qtr. If David would have picked up that first down, it would have been a totally different game.

We are a young, young team, we went toe to toe with a Salty old man, and I think we held our own. The game wasn't out of reach in the 4th Qtr.

You're telling me you didn't feel like we could win it, when David was running down the sideline to pick up that first??

I'm telling you I've never felt so good about being a Texan fan than I did then. We didn't pick it up........ but our coach went for it on 4th & 4, we were trying to win that game.

We didn't make that either, and our Defense got walked on..... but for 51 minutes Sept 10, 2006...... I was liking the koolaid, and I can't wait to see what flavor we have next week.

I'm with you. 4 new starters on offense, 2 of them Rookies. of the 11, only 3 players played in a 4-3 last year, and 2 of them were the 2 rookies I was talking about earlier.

Offensively, we've got a WCO going, but we criticize our QB for throwing the dumpoff, when that is what beat us Sunday. We don't want to run the clock, but that's how we got beat....... the dump offs, and lots of running.

We played an elite team, with elite players at almost every position. We went toe to toe with them, with our 5 starting rookies(almost a fifth of our team)

All in all I saw a lot of improvement.

Last season I was normally drunk by the end of the first quarter. This year I have managed to make it to half time.

I doubt we can beat Indy, but I do think that it will be more of a game than last Sunday. I just want to see DR or MW lay old Peyton out. Not hurt him, just make him look foolish. Indy doesn't look as good to me as they used to and I think that their domination of the AFC South is in jeopardy if the Jags can get something going. I just want to beat the Titans both times. After that everything else is just gravy.

I see DC making some real improvements and I think the offense will start to shine by the end of the season. I pray for an 8-8 season but I will settle for 4 wins.

I just want to take one of the first 5 games. A good early season upset sets the stage for the rest of your season.

Texansfan36

I think alot of people are forgetting just who the Eagles are....they are the team that went to the NFC championship game 4 of the last five years (Without T.O.) and the only reason they were so bad last year is because they lost McNabb. Everyone is judging them on what they did with a backup qb last year and you can't do that. We lost to an elite team, and even then we didn't get blown out. Sure we had some dark spots in our game, but then again we have a new coaching staff, and a-lot of rookies starting, I saw more in this one game then I saw in all our games last year. We will get better, heck we already are better.

Go Texans!!!!

Practice Squad
Let's face it, we opened the regular season against a team that is an early playoff contender and we only lost by 14.

My question has to be: Did we look that bad or did Philly look that good?

If we had been able to produce any yards from our running backs, the Eagles would have backed off Carr, but as soon as they saw they could stop the run with minimal effort, why not rush the QB?

Next week against the Colts, we are going to give up some points, but their D-Line is going to have a harder time stopping our running game. With that said, we'll see if Carr gets the time need in the pocket.
Just my opinion.

SAMURAITEXAN

I think Eagles is a playoff contender team and may win NFC East being that said. The Texans were competitive at least a half of the game against playoff contender which itself is an improvement from last year to me.

DeMeco was a beast. Carr has improved. WR's looked great. And, we actually used TE as a part of our passing scheme!

And yes, I'm still optimistic about the Texans this year!

GO TEXANS!!

While he won't be mistaken for Deon any time soon, Lewis Sanders had a pretty good game. It seemed like he broke up a few passes and almost got a pick.

The d line(and by that I mean the DEs) seemed a little stiff and didn't use a lot of pass rush moves. But I chalk that up to nerves.

Carr and the WRs did good jobs and will most likely get better as the season progresses.

The LBs seemed like they were flying around out of control at times, but they did a decent job.

We are basically a young team starting over....... As has been stated, there are some great improvements. Can we beat Indy, who would think? But then again, this is the NFL......

Everyone who is acting like we are a losing team off of one game, needs to get a grip!!!! They will figure it out and come back fighting. If we could do what we did in the first quarter, or possibly half, against the Eagles, then it is there. They just went into half time and figured out how to beat our new team.

We will come back, and we will prevail. Wish it could be against Peyton!!!

We COULD win this game. I don't expect it but it's definitely a possibility. Our running game might be better than we think it is. The Eagles D stuffed us but the Colts aren't as good against the run. If our running game surprises them, we could control the clock and keep Peyton off the field. And with our running game working, I expect Carr to perform even better than he did againt the Iggles. He could have a great game.

Hopefully our D will shut down their running game. But our safeties scare the crap out of me. Peyton is going to take advantage of them. We're going to have to get to him to keep him from hurting us. We might be able to take advantage of the fact that Edge isn't back their picking up the blitzes.

But... damn... our kids are going to have to play the games of their lives to pull off this upset. And, you know, any given Sunday and all that... :homer:

Considering that many (or most) of us want to win, but will be satisfied if we see progress and development, I will (ironically) paraphrase David Carr.

I wouldn't say the Colts game is a must win game, but it is a must play well game.

And I'm not saying that as a joke.

I'll be very surprised if we don't get beaten at least as badly as we did the other day. This team is improving, but the trench war is improving so slowly that you can hardly tell the difference. We won't get any consistent pressure on Manning and that's going to kill us. Again, we're going to have to find our running game, but the passing game looked much improved. I hope it stays that way when Freeney's looking for Carr's head or we will have a very long day. I have a lot of faith in Spencer, but again we find ourselves with a rookie facing Freeney and we can't find our running game right now. For several years now, I've seen the team that I thought was the best team the year before win the SB the next year. Last year I thought Indy was the best team. The year before that, I thought Pitt was the best team. You get the picture. This game in Indy worries me a lot more than just another L in the win/loss column.

Mr Shush

Waterboy
Freeney looked hurt and ineffectual against the Giants on Monday, and I doubt he'll be anything like 100%. That doesn't mean Mathis, Brock and the rest won't produce a pass-rush that gives us serious problems, but I don't think Freeney will be the main reason.

On a positive note, Footballoutsiders' VOA statistic says our offensive performance against the Eagles was 12th among all teams in week 1, and because it's so early in the season, they're not even adjusting for the fact that the Eagles have a very good to elite defense. I think we have a top 10 offensive unit, but the defense is still terrible (though not as historically God-awful as last year), so we will struggle through our tough schedule to a mark around 5-11 or 6-10, giving some good teams a few scares along the way.

I think it was a combination of both...Philly looked good, but we made some mistakes that cost us the game...Philly didn't just come out and stomp on us...Philly never was really able to relax, because like I said earlier, we were in it until the end...Im not sure how good Philly is in the grand scope of things, but they didn't make many mistakes and killed us with big plays...We don't have far to go....This year will be a fun year because IMO, there isn't a team on our schedule that we "can't" beat...I don't know about ya'll, but last year I knew we sucked big time, and Every game we went into I expected to lose and was surprised we managed the two we got...This year there is hope...And next year...I expect us to be a legit contender....

I saw some very nice positives: Demeco Ryans, Carr, TJ, AJ, EM.
I saw some negatives: Running game as a whole, secondary as a whole, game plan as a whole.
It seemed to me that Kubes was a bit nervous in his 1st "real" game as HC and didn't adapt as easily as he did as OC in Denver. Shoulda went with what was working and used the pass to open up the running game. I also would've liked to have a spy dedicated to Westbrook since it was mostly him and Stallworth kicking our tails. I'll bet he gets looser as the season goes along and he gets used to being "the Man".
I have no idea WHY our running game stunk it up so bad. The Eagles just plain out performed us there.
We all knew the secondary was weak, but counted on pressure up front to help them out. I hope to see better adaptation during the game this week.
I'm still optimistic about the season. Can't judge an entire season on just one game.

Of course our defense was worn out. They played for over 21 minutes of a 30 minute half! This indicates that our offense was unable to maintain control, unable to get CONSISTENT first downs, and simply unable to put themselves in a position to even kick a FG.
.
I agree with you. It also means that our Defense was unable to get off the field, meaning not being able to stop thier Offense. Let us remember the final drive of the game, Philly could've easily scored the way they were moving the ball. It could very well have been 31-10. It was thier choice not to. I was appreciative of Andy Reid for that. Let's get on to the next game and hope for some more improvement. Starting with finishing a complete game the way we start it.:redtowel:

This is going to be an interesting season because we have so many 1st time Head Coaches! Certainly, each one of these 'new' coaches has their own unique situations/challenges with their respective team but they all face similarities--new coaching staffs, new offense/defense, new personnel, etc. How will they do? The concensus on this board is that a 'new' HC can not win right away--it takes years to get 'everything' to 'gel.' Saying that, which coach will lead his team to the most victories his first year? Of course, we don't expect any of them to have a 'winning' season because that will take years, but it will still be fun/interesting to watch!!
