Does Kubiak have something up his sleeve for the season?

Texans34Life

I BLEED TEXANS!
I know the offense is not in sync, but I feel Kubiak is going to surprise everyone in Week 1. All that we saw in preseason, it might be to fool the national public. I think Carr will feel more relaxed in the pocket to pass to AJ and Moulds. I think the OL will perfect zone blocking so Lundy/Morency can find the holes to break out.

What do you guys think?

I sure hope so. Maybe he was telling Carr to be squeamish in the pocket to give opposing defenses the idea that he was still shell-shocked, and once the regular season starts...voila! That would be nice...

Don't expect the obvious from Kubiak. For example, he's known for running the ball, but in one of the preseason games Carr threw the ball 9 or 10 times in a row before a run was called. The run was effective and we went back to passing. Kubiak has always said he will do what is necessary to win. If he needs to pass he will do that and if he needs to run he will do that. The other team's defense is going to show the way.

I would love to get a look at the 15 plays we are thinking about opening with. I expect stretch running plays that have David rolling away from the plays. Then eventually have that play as a playaction / bootleg option.

It would be a shame not to use something that worked so well in the preseason.

Exactly, Ibar.........We just need to pray that Carr leaves these in bed with his wife (not meant in any disrespectful way).............

I'm sure that Kearse and Howard are already in Carr's head.

They need 150+ yards rushing this game to have a chance.

I think Kubiak has shown just the tip of the iceburg playcallling-wise. I have to beileve that there are a WHOLE bunch of plays they've been mastering in TC and Pactices that were never seen in the preseason that will be everyday plays in the reg. season. I could see a half-back pass or flea-flicker as the first play of the season! Can't wait for sunday!!! :wild:

Fle-flicker - great idea! Those only take about 4 seconds to develop. No way you trust a rookie RB and LT on that play to start the season. Half back pass? That would really bolster DC's confidence. But hey, whatever it takes.
It would be fun to see

Maybe the success Carr had with PA and bootlegs is in their heads...Carr IS a good running QB and if those 2 don't hold contain, it could be a long day for them. Pinning their ears back and speed rushing the outside edge COULD leave them being pushed out of the play. I know we haven't seen that in 4 years, but we haven't seen much competent coaching in 4 years, either. That being said, I HAVE to agree with you, AJ. Spencer is going to have a hard time handling a seasoned vet who can rotate in and out to stay fresh. May be best to just use a straightforward runniing attack and play to Spencer's strength, while picking your spots to throw and maybe catch them off guard

Give Kubiak more credit...He knows Spencer is a rookie....This isn't Capers we are talking about...Look for a lot of double TE sets, and runningbacks chipping before routes...Look for a lot of roll outs, and PA....Do not look, or expect Spencer to be going one on one too many times....Kubiak is going to try to outscheme the Eagles because I think it's painfully obvious we do not have the personnel to just line up and try to take it to them...

I have to agree and think your assesment is right on. I think if they pin their ears back and rush repeatedly then the dump off pass to the running back will be wide open and will pay huge divedends in yardage gains and moving the chains. It won't be pretty, but it will be efficient until they respect it and then we can open up on other things. I think Philly will be suprised and I hope their staff is as cocky as their fans (doubtful) in thinking that it will be a breeze on Sunday. I am nervous for our new team and am optomistic as well. I hope I don't have a heart attack before Sunday...or while the game is playing. Like I stated the other day, I've almost died twice this preseason and I don't think my heart can take the added excitement....lol. :yikes:

I am sure Kubiak has a trick up his sleeve somewhere in this game. The main thing is to stay patient with this team. We have a brutal first half of the season and our talent isn't quite there yet but is coming. The main thing I want to see is progress and Carr playing better maybe not perfect but show some confidence in himself and his wr to make the play for him. This team will get better but we can't judge them on their first few games along with David Carr because remember it took 1 year with Jake plummer in this system to get good at it and look at his season last year. Should be a fun year and let's see some progress.

I agree with your assesment, but we are going to have to draw a line in the sand at some point with regards to the QB. I know it's still early with the new system and I do feel like David can/will pick it up nicely and be succesful, but if he isn't, we are going to have to start looking at other options. I have no clue as to when that point will be and I hope it doesn't happen, but it is possible. Maybe next year if he does horrible now. I don't know as I am still optomistic that his talent will be able to oversdhadow the failures of the past.

David Doesn't have to play like a number one overall for us to win(although it would help)...David just needs to play as good as Sage did in his pre-season action....I don't think we need superstars on this offense to win...just guys who understand the system and don't make many mistakes...If David is atleast not losing games for us, then he should remain the QB...But if he gets out there and is constantly making mental or physical errors then he will be yanked....

I hope to G-d that you all that are talking in terms of Kubs "opening up the playbook" are not relying on the revelation of a string of trick plays. If that is all that is available, our 2-14 record seems very reproducible. More than likely, Kubs will concentrate on perfecting the execution of the plays we have already seen in preseason. "Opening up the playbook" will probably include more innovative use of the TE's as well as further developing the longer passing game. I think we'll be seeing more medium and long passes which may sometimes precede the establishment of the running game, and other times the running game will be used to set up the passing game............something that in past years would have been "unthinkable."

I can't speak for other posters...But I wasn't talking about trick plays....And I disagree with you....I think we will see many different formations and plays than what we have seen in the pre-season...Our offense has been rather vanilla/basic...There are much more intricate things that we can/ could've done this pre-season....I don't think anyone was talking about reverses, and HB passes and such....

I don't think we're truly disagreeing (I was responding to posts such as the one I quoted). That beeing said, executing against your own controlled and predictable D in practice is far from the same as executing in a game against "the unknown." I think that Kub will be somewhat conservative about opening up too much too soon since we're dealing with a large group of rookies and a group of players who, in the big picture, have worked together for a relatively short period of time.

Any play that they have run in practice besides "trick plays", are going to be game this sunday....And you are right that running plays at practice vs. Trying to score in a live game is different, but Kubiak is going to be trying to win...not trying to see how perfect they can run a play...that is where the disagreement comes in...

Bottom line: I think we will see some of the basic plays that we have seen...But We are definitely going to see much more of the playbook...I don't know if some have forgotten, but Sherman has also brought over some plays and he may call a series or two this game....

I agree with the both of ya'll. I think they will open up the playbook a little more than what we've seen. OTOH, I also agree to the fact that our team is young and very green to the new offense. That being said, I do think Kubiak will kind of keep things kind of basic. Throwing a complete gamebook at the team would be a little overwhelming. Personally, I'd like to see a little more blitz packages on the defensive side of the ball.

I think you will see smart playcalling but not neccesarily good execution, in the long run, the execution is the key, not the play. I think that will decide the outcome of most of our games. most everyone will be forwarned and looking for the bootleg/rollout stuff, but if we execute we can catch them at a disadvantage. I see lewis on a post with aj and moulds running in patterns, or and overload right with walter on a fly, lotsa secondary manipulation if walter and lewis step up and carr can stay in the pocket/stay poised, we could have some surprise heros in this one. ofcourse if we have no success in the running game the defense will never loosen up enough to try the deep stuff. then it will be a long day of dump offs under coverage and hoping to get enough for the first down. lets hope we can run the ball at the very least. I wanna see spencer knock some guys on their butts as he surges to the 2nd or 3rd level. :)

Yeah I know :) all kidding aside, this team seems to have that problem.

Something tells me if Kubiak had something up his sleeve for the early part of the season, he would shown something in the preseason so defensive coordinators would be guessing early in the season.

The preseason tapes show the Texans are still the same offense in production, just a different look.

Therefore, look for exotic blitzs, stacking the line against the run, and purposely giving Carr the short game when throwing the ball because he seems to take it every time.

Tampa and Denver (and maybe St. Louis) BOTH stacked the line with up to 8 in the box and we managed to run against them. I kinda think THAT'S the point. Keep the D honest by making them honor the run, then burn their tails with the pass when they get exotic and try funky blitzes. I DO NOT think this is the same old offense with a new coat of paint on it. I saw things I've been wishing on for 4 years and I think that was just plain vanilla. We get cookies&cream and pistachio starting Sunday. Here's a nifty idea....MAYBE it takes good play calling AND proper execution to make a unit function on all cylinders. Just a thought that Capers never had. Kubes will provide the former and DEMAND the latter.

Opposing defenses are going to continue to throw the kitchen sink at him until he proves he can burn a bitz with something other than a dump pass.

Kubes better hope and pray he puts some touch on that first pass under blitz pressure and delivers a big gainer or TD. That'll do more to save his career than anything. He's got to beat the blitz. Beat it, not avoid it.

I agree with you for the most part. The only thing that caught my eye was the burn thier tails with the pass. Other than the two TD passes against the 2's and 3's. I haven't really seen any evidence of burning other teams by passing. You're correct in thinking that, but I haven't noticed it yet. I'd definetly like to see us a little more agressive downfield.:twocents:

Great point HOU-TEX, and that is problem I see it with the Texans, defenses are not concerned about the mid to deep passes. The Texans are having a hard time using the entire part of the field.

That problem, not getting the ball downfield using the pass, creates more blitzs and teams stacking the run more in their defensive schemes.

Carr needs to make them pay for that gameplan. Until that happens, the offense is going to struggle scoring points, but Carr will get his 60% completion ratio and 200 yards passing every game because they are going to give him that short passing game all day long.

To be honest, I haven't either. Maybe wishful thinking. IMO, Carr will need some time to find the groove. He didn't play a lot in preseason, and seems like a "high-maintenance" guy. Maybe having some success will breed success with him. No success certainly has had that effect on him.

I don't know but for what it is worth. Denver put up 49 points on the Eagles last season and that was with Terrell Owens and Donovan Mcnabb. Denver won.

So I am assuming Kubiak knows a thing or two about that defense.

I agree with this as I've said it myself several times.

I don't understand it when you say "no need for tricks". Are you talking about blitzing? Blitzing is not a trick. It's an integral part of defenses around the league.

I guess, here's our answer..........Katy bar the door???????????

NOT PLAIN VANILLA
Under the leadership of head coach Gary Kubiak and offensive coordinator Troy Calhoun, Houston scored its most points during any preseason in team history. But here’s the catch, you haven’t seen anything yet.

“The preseason we were kind of vanilla, we didn’t really want to show anything,” Eric Moulds said. “But now we’re going to put the bulk of our plays in and this is an offense that you really have to study. You have to know what everybody is doing because anybody can line up in any position. I could line up at running back sometimes, (Wali) Lundy could line up at receiver, so you have to know what everybody is doing. You have to get in your playbook and study because this offense holds people accountable.”

The players will be held accountable by their coaches, but also the fans. Now in their fifth year, and after a disappointing 2005 season, the Texans have done little to excite football fans in the Bayou City. That should all change starting Sunday.

Most teams, even those under new leadership, will scale back both their offensive and defensive schemes during preseason play so they don’t reveal too much information to their regular season opponents. That makes this Sunday the first opportunity for fans to see the Texans full arsenal on offense and the players are almost as excited as the fans.

Yeah Well, my bold prediction, the first play outta da box, max protect 9, send A.J. on a double move deeeeep. We do that then Kubes has something up his sleve. I open every game that way till we complete it or we get it picked. We don't do that , he's like the rest of us hoping the rooks hold and Carr eventually "gets" it.
