Thats what I thought the rule to be also.

Does anyone else find it odd that we apparently signed a NT from somebody's practice squad?

Johnson will have to stay on the roster for 3 games.

I really hope this guy has a big upside. We really need some unexpected guys to step-up when its there turn in the rotation. I doubt this guy is going to be able to just sit with Sage and hang out for a few games.

Here is a brief bio:

Thomas Johnson
Position: DT
Height: 6-2
Weight: 302
Born: 06/24/1981
College: Middle Tennessee
NFL Experience: 2

run stuffer....we are weak vs the run in short yardage/goal line...makes sense to me. Especially since Kubiak said he was looking for more interior linemen defensively.

Anyone signed off a practice squad has to go on the active roster for 3 games as Lucky said. We can waive someone off our roster and put him (if he passes waivers) on our practice squad and then swap later.

I don't think you can just swap. After spending 3 games on our active roster, Johnson would then have to be waived before signing to our practice squad - giving Dallas the chance to re-sign him away from us. Any time a player is released from the active roster, he must clear waivers.

That's why I said if he passes waivers--unclear but meant to apply to anyone going to the practice squad. Yes anyone going to the practice squad can only do so after passing thru waivers.

Thank-you, infantrycak for clarifying. The waivers/free agency/practice squad system is a little complex and they have some odd rules!

I would guess Malone. It would seem odd that they would demote Ellison to the ps after just claiming him, but I guess that could happen too. I doubt if they are planning to keep 5 DTs on the 53 (considering two of their ends rotate inside on third downs, etc)

It's real frustrating that there is typically such a lag of info on the Texans website concerning roster moves. You also wonder why other media have not been given the info to report. Obviously, in order to make a move like Johnson, there has to be a simultaneous countermove. Obviously, all of this is occuring in Cyberspace.........or maybe the Twilight Zone..........I'm trying to contact Rod Serling at this very moment.........will be back to you in just..................

Signed off the practice squad. Doesn't this mean he has to be placed on our 53 man roster?

Did you notice it only took us 23 seconds to sign him after they signed him to the practice squad?

I can't find any info on him. He is not listed anywhere on NFL.com

He's only played in 2 games with 1 tackle in each. There are no profiles and no bios...................and still no counter transaction as to who has been given their pink slip.

We drafted DT TRAVIS "TJ" Johnson, we signed NT THOMAS Johnson from Dallas practice squad. Could we fix the thread?

*Thanks*

says Kevin Curtis got the boot fom the PS.

This still supposedly leaves 8 on the PS without Johnson. Still doesn't account for countertransaction:

David Anderson WR 5-10 197 R Colorado State

Robert Douglas FB 6-2 237 1 Memphis

Anthony Maddox DT 6-1 295 3 Delta State

Chris Taylor RB 6-0 224 R Indiana

John Walker S 6-1 204 R Southern California

Mike Brisiel G 6-5 300 R Colorado State

Richie Ross WR 6-4 209 R Nebraska-Kearney

Quinton Porter QB 6-5 233 R Boston College

So we pick up Ellison off waivers, stick him on the 53, then release him two days later. Cool.

I guess they liked the ex-Cowboy better.

hmmm ... Cowboy defensive insider.....

I'm hoping the Texans put him on the practice squad. I believe they released Curtis about the same time they signed Thomas Johnson.

By the way, does anyone know how many players you're allowed to have on the practice squad?

according to what I read in our transactions, we still have one practice squad spot open, I wonder who they're saving that for? are we allowed to resign someone to the practice squad after we release them from the practice squad?

What's surprising to me is that NFC East and AFC North teams can have 9 practice squad members instead of 8. By the NFL's International Development Practice Squad program, the Eagles among other teams are allowed the addition of an exempted top NFLE player on the squad. In past years, the program now in its 3rd year, have produced several players that ultimately were signed to active rosters. In its inaugural year, the NFC West was the only participant. Last year, the AFC West and NFC South. I don't know how the rotation is determined, but the process could easily bring up questions of "favoritism" and imbalance.

Hey I know this dude....We went to undergrad together...I hope that everything works out for him here with the Texans..Seeing that our other Blue Raider Alumni Calico just got cut...
