Salary cap questions in relation to cuts/injury

How do the following players not being on the team effect the salary cap for this year and next?

1) Todd Wade (June 1 cut)
2) Robaire Smith (Just recently cut SOLELY b/c of his salary according to Kubiak)
3) Domanik Davis (injury)

All these guys were making significant money. So what happens with their salary? Do we still have to pay all of them their full contracts? Will this free up money for FAs next offseason?
 
The guys over at HPF have it as follows:

Todd Wade will go for $6.67 mil in dead money on the cap this year.
Robaire Smith $5.57 in dead money this year.
Gary Walker $1.8 mil in dead money this year.
Marcus Coleman$2.53 in dead money this year.
DD will count against the cap as if he was active--$3.8 mil this year.

Gary Walker $5.49 mil in dead money next year.

OK, so dead money means it is paid this year. Does that mean we are free and clear of any obligation to them next year?

And as far as DD goes, what if he can never play again?
 
I talked to Keith about this a while back and his estimate of Walker and Wade is an educated guess (not the total amounts but the way it will be split between this year and next). Either way, I think you can count on an almost 50/50 split between this year and next for the total of the Walker, Wade, and Smith dead money. They might decide to take more this year than next, maybe up to a 70/30 split, but no one knows that at present.

DD has three years of prorated bonus to deal with after this year amounting to about $3.9 million that will have to be accounted for in '07 assuming he's not here.

Oops, edited rather than replied at first.

Dead money is an accounting for money which has already been paid out but was to be prorated over the life of contracts. For example sign a guy to a $14 mil signing bonus on a 7 year contract it prorates onto the cap at $2 mil per year. Cut him in year three and only $4 mil has been accounted for on prior caps so the remaining $10 mil has to be accounted for. The June 1st cut system allows it to be defered a year with $2 mil going this year and $8 mil the next. That is what Keith at hpf is projecting the Texans have done with Walker. All of the other players he has the full cap on this year.

If DD never plays again the same rules apply and any unprorated amount remaining at the time of the cut will have to be accounted for.

Don't you figure they will try to take up all they can on this year's cap?--seems like a waste to let it go unused and restrict options more next year.

If they have the space, yes. That's why I was saying up to maybe a 70/30 split between this year and next. I haven't looked at it closely recently but I seriously doubt they can eliminate it all this year. They still have to leave some wiggle room this year in case anyone else lands on IR and they have to sign additional players during the season. Keith's estimates are usually pretty good.

Keith has been able to show that other than Walker we can eat the money this year, and thus should. Moving any money to next year that could be absorbed this year is criminal (ok not criminal but bad cap management). Saying goodbye to the bad personnel decisions made by Casserly as quickly as possible can only speed up the process of getting his team better.

...so Todd Wade $6.67 this year + Robaire Smith $5.57 this year + Gary Walker $1.8 mil this year = $14.04

+ Gary Walker's $5.49 mil next year = $19.53 for those three....

then 14.04/19.53 = 72% of WWS dealt with this year..... good......the sooner we can rid ourselves of that stench, the better.

We'll have DD, Wong, and Weigert to deal with next year.....and maybe Carr :whistle:

They still need wiggle room this year just in case of guys getting injured and roster replacements. They can't bump right up into the cap limit and I'm not sure how close Keith got to the number this year. He's usually pretty close. I used to have a goal to be within 2% when I did it (2 million on a 100 million cap) but sometimes that's tough because you never know all the bonuses and incentives.
 
Carr's new contract is pretty straightforward in terms of cap. His old one wasn't with all the buybacks, incentives, options, etc... The high round guys' cap calculations can be tricky and there's typically not a lot of public info out there on bonus structure and incentives (until they go into effect).
