I've been watching the Texans this preseason and I must say that I am very impressed with the competitiveness of your team. I think you guys are going to be pretty good for the next few years...and beyond. I think you guys played the Broncos real tough even though you lost. Just as I think we played the Carolina Panthers real tough the other nite(and lost). I think the Panthers and Broncos are two of the premiere teams in the league.
I really like the running game I'm seeing in Texas. Most don't associate the Texans with a strong running attack...but it's looking good to me. I don't think you are going to win a lot of games in the NFL if you cannot run the ball. The run game opens up the passing game and vice versa. You guys have a few nice looking backs in there...and Sherman is an excellent coach with the backs.
I personally think you guys made a great choice with Mario in the draft. Mario would have been a good fit with some teams in the NFL, while Reggie Bush may have been a better fit for others. I don't agree that you should simply pick the most dynamic player(the Heisman winner or the top QB) by default. You have to consider the choices in the context of the team's needs, chemistry, coaching, etc. Mario was a great choice for the Texans...while Bush was a great choice for New Orleans. Being a Dolphin fan, I would select Mario over Bush. I'm content with Ronnie Brown as our featured back..so Mario would make more sense to me.
OK...now about QB's. I've been a Dolphin fan for years. I think I caught on with the Dolphins at the tail end of Bob Griese's career. I remember the David Woodley era and I was watching monday night football the night Dan Marino came in the game and made his debut as a rookie. Anyway, I grew to become a big Sage Rosenfels fan during the last few years. He really worked hard and got better....working his way up to #2 after barely surviving roster cuts in his first few years. I'm really not surprised that Sage is having a good preseason with the Texans. I won't get drawn into the QB controversy thing because I don't think there really is one in Texas. I think that Kubiak is not one of those flip flopping coaches that creates revolving doors at the QB position. Saban isn't like that either, which is why Sage didn't steal the starting job from Frerotte last year. Saban and kubiak know that when a team wins and loses it is usually not the blame(or credit) of any one player. I honestly think it takes an awful lot to impress these two coaches(Saban and Kubiak). So I don't think that Carr's job is in jeapordy. I would just be happy that you guys have a solid backup in Rosenfels...knowing that he will be ready to lead the team should anything happen to Carr(injury or protracted string of poor play). I think we have a great situation with Culpepper and Harrington, and you guys have one here in Texas with Carr and Rosenfels. Instead of debating which one should start, I'd suggest that you guys trust that Kubiak will always do what is best for the team. I trust Nick Saban because he is a great coach and we are happy to have him in Miami. I think you guys should trust Kubiak because he is a great coach that is going to lead you guys to the elite group of teams in the NFL(in due time). These are two very rational coaches. They have their eye on the big picture at all times. They are like those good chess players who are always thinking two and three moves ahead. Many bad coaches in the league are only thinking about the next move. These are the ones that are always yanking QB's in and out thinking that eventually they'll put the next Brett Favre or Dan Marino on the field and all will be well in fantasy land. The best coaches build good teams with many good players, good attitudes, discipline, hard work, chemistry, and confidence.
So as I see it, you Texans have a lot of great things going for you now. The only downside I see is that you guys are in a very tough division and you have a very tough schedule. I'd suggest that you guys be patient. I hope you pull off some big wins this season(but not the Miami game).
We miss Sage in Miami. Good luck Texans! See you in a few weeks. Bring your A game because Culpepper has been looking pretty good in preseason. We've got a nice young back in Ronnie Brown, and a stable of good receivers(led by Chris Chambers).
