ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) - The Oakland Raiders signed Jeff George to a contract Monday, bringing back a player who hasn't thrown an NFL pass in five seasons.

George, the No. 1 overall pick by Indianapolis in 1990, joined the team in time for Monday's afternoon practice. He previously played for the Raiders in 1997-98, starting 23 games and throwing 33 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

It is not immediately clear what his role will be on the Raiders, who already have Aaron Brooks, Andrew Walter and Marques Tuiasosopo on the roster

Uhhhh, I thought I had to do a double take on this.

I can't belive Jeff George is coming back. I'm sure fantasy football players are scrambling everywhere.

he has a cannon for an arm .... :shades:
Aside from Elway, best I've ever seen.

But he's got to be approaching at least 40 years old by now. And he wasn't that great during his prime.

Aaron Brooks 9/15 187yards...... 2 TDs........

& still can't save his job. what's a man gotta do around here to get some 'spect??

What? Was Jim Plunkett too busy?

No, Al Davis just called Jeff by accident.

He had mistakenly filed George's number on the wrong card in his rolodex and wound up talking to him when he tried to call George Blanda

He figured that $810,000 was a bargain to avoid admitting he'd made a mistake and the other owners agreed to pay some of the salary since it keeps Jeff from bothering their GM's with calls asking for work.

This has got to be related to Davis either skipping or taking a double or triple dose of one of his medications. I bet Art Shell is wishing he was back running that Bed & Breakfast right about now.

If Jeff George can steal your job from you. There is a freaking good chance you didn't diserve it in the first place. The man has not throw a pass in 5 years (as previously stated). I cannot believe they are even doing this. Why didn't they just hold open tryouts the talent level would be about the same. Heck maybe even a little better.

I don't get this at all. Why not wait till teams start making cuts and you might pick up a QB that way. I'd try Drew Henson first..he cleared waivers.

George hasn't played in an NFL regular-season game since he started two games for Washington in 2001. The Redskins were outscored 67-3 in those games. He was subsequently released.

His contract is supposedly only a 4 day contract as a ‘look-see,” to be a possible stop gap back QB. Walter (present #2) has been suffering from bursitis and tendinitis of his shoulder in recent days. Walter sustained an injury to the same shoulder his senior season at Arizona State. The injury required surgery and seems to have become somewhat of a chronic problem.

George has a career won-loss record of 47-80 with a career QB rating of 80. He has completed 2,298 of 3,967 pass attempts for 27,602 yards, 154 touchdowns and 113 interceptions in his career.

So why George????? who has indeed always had a rocket arm, but who has NEVER accepted coaching, instead doing what he wanted when he wanted?????? I know........He is reunited with his all-time most prolific receiver.......Randy Moss.

Very surprising, considering he hasn't played since 2001..... But Al Davis digs the long ball, and George always could throw it the length of the field....
