If you saw his "on a leash" comment on Gene Upshaw, here is the follow up from Robert Smith from the NFLPA.

"To me, this is Gumbel's Dan Rather-type mistake. He's someone who has been around for a while and has some credibility, but who wants to believe a certain perception. I believe part of it with Gumbel is that Gene is a much more powerful black man than he is. And he's jealous of Gene's power and position. I think Gumbel's even jealous of where his former [NBC's Today] co-host Katie Couric is, and how she's moved on to a more powerful position and he still hasn't.''

Didn't Gumbel make a comment or two a month or so ago that got everyone in an uproar also? Maybe he needs the attention.

Freedom of the press applies to government entities restricting speech not to an employer like the NFL Network responding to significant interested parties like the NFL and NFLPA.

How so? If you are willing to voice an opinion in the name of free speech then you should be prepared and allow those that you spoke against voice their rebuttal. After all, it is freedom of speech right?

I can tell you that if someone had something to say about one of my employees that I felt was unfounded I would make sure that the person that said it would know my feelings on the subject as well. Hopefully the individual that made the comment would make one of some sort of intelligence and not one that is the equivalent of name calling in the elementary school playground.

I remember this guy when he restired from the NFL. A lot like Berry Sanders,
except not the star or high profile that Sanders was. But he quit on his own
terms, marchs to a different drummer and all that.
But this guy is smart and very articulate. I hope the rank and file of the players union pays attention to what he's got to say.
 
I have to disagree here. Yes, he is working for the NFL Network, but the piece was aired by HBO. Secondly, they knew what they were getting with Gumbel. This isn't the first time he has taken a controversial stance on an issue. If they thought he would just fall in line they should have done their homework.
