Today's Justice column on Mario

Williams will be given every chance

I know some of you just love to read what this guy writes.
"You don't find guys with his size that have that much athletic ability," Texans defensive coordinator Richard Smith said. "He's a conscientious guy, he's not an arrogant guy, he's a guy that accepts coaching. When you've got that kind of player, then it's our jobs as coaches to continue to develop him."
Now, does anyone besides me think that Smith is talking just just as much about Reggie, as he is about Mario?:hmmm:

Williams has been challenged more mentally than physically. Coaches have asked him to learn both defensive end positions and to be prepared to move to tackle on passing downs.

Coming soon: Mario Williams drops into pass coverage.

"That's not a problem unless I get someone who can run a 4.1," Williams said jokingly. "I've got to adjust. It's kind of a tough thing, but it's something I'm going to take with open arms."
That was interesting. Haven't heard of that one.
Asked to evaluate himself, Williams said: "I could have done a lot better. I was jitterish. I didn't know what to expect. In a preseason game, you don't know who's playing and you don't play long enough to get a rhythm and pick up things. It was all right for a first game."

If he's bothered by the Vince-Reggie-Mario debate, he's not showing it. He has been prepped on these kinds of questions, so I was unable to ambush. Just goes to show the interview tactic that works on an easy mark like Jeff Van Gundy won't work on everybody.
Good luck on your next interview with Van Gundy, Richard.:)

Gee Richard are you and John McClain going to bunk with Reggie/Vince since you look for every opportunity to slam Texans and exalt 2 BELOW AVERAGE teams that seemingly of late draft in top 10:bananasplit: :crutch:

I read the article, and I listened to McClain's podcast about tonight's game. I wish one of them could get through a whole piece about the Texans w/o mentioning VY or RB, but I guess that is asking too much. Even when Mario has his big break-out game they are going to do it. Pitiful.

it is what it is, I see no reason why Texans fans should not follow the careers of Reggie and Vince & imagine what if? at the same time embrace Mario and obaserve the Texans transformation into a classy, 1st rate defensive team that is capable of winning championships. as I've stated repeatedly long before the draft of 06 the Texans would be winners which ever way they choose to go, you can't lose with choices like that :twocents:

Get ready for the next phase of "what were the Texans thinking," because Mathias Kiwanuka (32nd overall pick) has played very very well in his first two preseason games and he has the NY media hype machine behind him. I can see it coming.

Did anyone read an article about John Mcargo saying how much of a neat freak Mario is ? The reason I bring this up is Mario may be a detail person thinking to much but once he gets it down it will be to the finest detail .

where do they have him playing? I thought he was a weakside de too, which would not make alot of sense with the Texans taking Mario Williams 1st.

I brought up two days ago that it would be interesting, but the peanut gallery shot it down.

Are you referring to my comment that "we won't be seeing Mario dropping or sliding into coverage any time soon?"

I'd like to know if I'm part of what you consider the peanut gallery.

o.k., I give every Justice column a clear mind and fresh chance. But then he has to start it off with "He's the guy who isn't Vince or Reggie." So I'm already off to a bad start.

"How could the Texans have passed on Bush? Do they really think David Carr is better than Vince Young?"

Is he plagiarizing himself? Or maybe McClain? It's like freakin' Groundhog Dog at the Chronicle or something.

Are there that many Houston fans that are stuck in the past that want to read this same take over and over and over and over > infinity, ad naseum + Vegas Elvis?

"The Texans took him instead of Bush because they lack good judgment. OK, that's a weak attempt at humor."

Humor?! WTF? It's like someone insulting you, and when you call them out on it, they say "I'm just joking". But it's not funny, so how is it even considered "joking"? Lame-O. :loser (pssst, Justice: read Richard Connally's "Hairballs" in the Houston Press for humorous writing style ideas)

Finally, HALFWAY through the article, Justice starts talking about Mario instead of a draft decision from four months ago.

But wait!

"The Texans don't seem bothered, either. They know the topic will come up regularly as Bush, Young and Williams get deeper into their careers. They seem comfortable with their decision."

yeah, especially with local sports writers that constantly bring it up!

I'm going to the 'hate thread' in the NSZ and adding Richard Justice. This guy offers nothing of football information that I haven't already read weeks/months ago on this board by people that know much more about football and actually care about this team.

If I want to read about people gripping on the draft, then I'll read the forum archives. I'd like some news every once in awhile from my local newspaper...but I guess that would be too much to ask for or expect.

If the shoe fits, smell it. Since we are all fans and thereby consumers of the US market's predominant nut, the peanut, we are all part of the peanut gallery.

If you really want to peel back the onion, the statement you made was pretty definitive on something that was not definitive in prospective scheme given comments in the past, but the prospect of him dropping or sliding are not far fetched given Mario's athletic prowess. Moreover, hearing Mario's comments they suggest that he may have been doing it in practice for some snaps.

I need to watch the game again, I thought he came in for Strahan but now I can't recall. Kiwi has been playing against 2nd and 3rd teamers and he's not going to start any time soon with Strahan and Uminyiora ahead of him - but part of my comment was based on the likely overhype factor because of the NY media.
