Ain't it a KICKER for the Colts?

IF this becomes a chronic problem now, it could be another factor for the Texans in their division race. I would suspect either way the Colts are now going to be scampering for some sort of backup insurance just in case. I don't know how reliable a kicker they can pick up at this point in time.

Colts' Vinatieri misses practice with sprain
NFL.com wire reports

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (Aug. 15, 2006) -- Kicker Adam Vinatieri, the Indianapolis Colts' biggest offseason acquisition, missed practice with a sprained ankle.
Coach Tony Dungy said Vinatieri hurt his ankle while running, the same day the Colts cut Shane Andrus, the only other kicker on the roster.
"He did it in conditioning, and he's day-to-day," Dungy said.
Indianapolis signed Vinatieri, considered the NFL's best clutch kicker, to a five-year contract in March to replace Mike Vanderjagt. Vinatieri had two Super Bowl-winning field goals with New England.

I like Vinatieri and never wish injury on any player, but it couldn't have happened to a better team. ;)

In the division race? As much as I love the Texans, I don't think there's a chance in hel! they'll compete for the division this year.

We may very well not WIN the division, but Colts without a reliable kicker=better chance to beat Colts + chance to move up higher in division standings.

I love Adam Vinatieri. I always thought that he was one of the most respectable figures in the Patriots dynasty.... and considering he won two of them, he deserves a little credit. But to me, the move he made this off-season was troublesome.

I will never understand how AV rationalized going from the team he has played with for almost a decade, has won SBs with, and had so much respect with. I especially cannot believe that he would have signed with the horseshoes.

I frequent the Patriots message board, and they are still talking about the betrayal even today. Isn't it weird how football analysts have considered Adams move one of the most significant of the off-season? Of course, I do not believe it was extremely significant compared to the Pats losing McGinest or Givens, but oh well.

I will never understand how he rationalized his move. The only explanation is... money. To me it was a rotten thing to do. I know some guys are gunna respond to that statement with "the NFL is a business, what do you expect?", but still..... don't you build a little bit of commitment to a team after going to three SBs and having such an important role in all of them (and in the postseason)?

I have a throwback Vinatieri jersey from the Pats. I always liked it the most because it turned the most heads. My favorite response was "I didn't know they made kicker jerseys". Hehe.

All in all, I see it as the foremost reminder that dynasties rise and fall, and there is no exception. I believe the Pats are still contenders, and that they are the "team to beat" in the AFC East, but they are not nearly the same. They still have Brady though, thankfully....

Adam Vinatieri and punter Hunter Smith are both injured and expected to miss Sunday's preseason game against Seattle, leaving the Colts scrambling to find replacements.

On Wednesday, that meant trying out backup quarterback Shaun King at kicker and tight end Ben Utecht at punter. Dungy appreciated their efforts, but by Thursday, he'd already decided the Colts needed to add two experienced kickers for the preseason home opener.

He said after the morning workout that the team would probably sign [just released] kicker Shane Andrus and a punter.

Nice post, and good job of capturing how Pats fans feel about it. Vinatieri never even gave Belichick and Pioli a chance to match or counteroffer the Indy deal. I think that's why we're all kind of pissed at him. As much as he's done for the franchise, that was a really crappy way to go out.

I guarantee you he'll get a healthy chorus of "BOOOOO!" when Indy comes to town in November. If he signed with pretty much any other non-divisional team, it wouldn't have stung so bad. (Can you say, "Johnny Damon?")

I agree completely. I respect players and teams that show loyalty. While I understand the NFL is a business and often requires tough decisions, there is still a human side of things.

Rumors have been flying around for days now about whether or not Indianapolis Colts kicker Adam Vinatieri has a broken bone in his ankle. The team has been denying all reports that Vinatieri's ankle is broken and stands by their idea that it is only a sprained ligament. However, according to NFL.com, a player close to Adam says that he believes the kicker has a broken bone in his ankle and could miss a part of the season. Yikes...
