Strange Move by the Ref

Right before the Texans 1st extra point attempt, while the player are getting into their stances, one of the chiefs downguys lines up over the center. The Back Judge wlks up behind him and smakes him on the but a few times. He appears to be telling him to get over, the downguys never looks up but does slide toward the guard.

I have never seen a Ref do this and was not aware that no one could line up over the center in a extra point attempt. Any one know if this is the case? Are they protecting the LSs.

Well I know in High School football you can not mess with the Snapper so That was probably it. Even after the ball is snapped you can not mess with the long snapper.

I knew that was true in HS, but I thought you could bury the snapper in college and the pros.
 
It is a new rule this year... on extra points and fg, you cannot line up directly over the snapper since it is a position that you have to stay down on and don't want them sustaining injury.

I am not sure about punts, but FG and PAT for sure.
 
During a field goal attempt or a PAT, any defensive player within one yard of the line of scrimmage at the snap must have his helmet outside the snapper’s shoulder pad. This will provide protection to the snapper, who is in a defenseless position. Penalty: Illegal

If you pay close attention, during every pre-season, refs do a lot of talking to both players and coaches. They are trying to make sure everybody understands the rule changes and learns to implement them while the games don't matter.
 
If that was it, then I'm glad the ref moved the guy over. No need to start throwing flags like that in a preseason game, but he still protected the center and made sure the guy understood the rule.
 
I agree with the last two posters. I see nothing at all wrong with what the ref did in this instance. In the regular season, no, but in pre-season, why throw a flag on a PAT?

The same reason that they gave Carr the 1st down on the 4th and 1 without measuring... they are helping out the teams understand the rules and give the teams the benefit of the doubt. Keep the flow of the game moving along.
 
This new rule strengthens my point on a prior thread on long snappers. I am not saying anyone can do it, but we have Flannagan McKinney, Hodgdon and Joppru one of which should be able to get the job done, but I won't start that up again..

Vinny, do you think the refs directing the defensive linemen will continue in the longrun, or do you think they are doing it for the time being to allow players to get used to the rule?

If it is a rule protecting the player I think the protection of the player supersedes the refs being quiet and watching a guy get hurt then throwing a flag.

I see what you are saying there, kind of like refs blowing plays dead when there is still action on the field in certain situations when piles of players are still moving, etc.

No Vinny. I know how hard it is. I also know how other players are taught to perform a job. QBs are taught to hold for a kicker or be a receiver. Tight ends are taught to be full backs. A center should be able to be taught to deep snap. Pittman snaps. He doesn't block (everyone says the deep snapper gets creamed). He doesn't go downfield on special teams on kick offs. He deep snaps. I realise the importance. I just find it hard to believe that Hodgdon for example can't do this. I want another position freed up. If it can't be done, ok. :hides:
 
Putting the ball in a tight window with a spiral in less than a second while bending over and chunking it between your legs isn't something most large guys can do...that's why you see so many smallish long snappers. If this was so easy there would not be dedicated long snappers around the NFL. Teams would just use their centers.
 
I would like to state for the record that Pittman is a good long snapper and has a hot girlfriend.

it is hard. go outside and try it. put a tire or something five-ten yards away from you, aim your ass at it and fire footballs thru it b/w your legs. i failed.
