Hold It Right There, Sage....

ESPN radio was just reporting that Kubiak is experimenting with Rosenfels
as a holder. This is a question I've brought up in years past....why not have one of backup QB's hold for ST's? It introduces just one more "unknown" for the opposing D, and very well may open up options here-to-for not known to the Texans and Texans fans. There IS an advantage to having a QB in on EVERY play (other than on receiving punts and kickoffs, of course).

Non-traditional: Normally, back up quarterbacks have a second job as a holder in special teams. The Texans have designated punter Chad Stanley as a holder instead of Sage Rosenfels.

“One of the reasons I think you see punters being holders is that those two guys can be together all day long,” Kubiak said. “The quarterback has to go to various other drills and do other things. They have all day just to work on their craft and do what they do; I think that’s why they stay complacent. (QB) Sage (Rosenfels) will be able to hold, and give him a rest if he’s doing something else. We’re at this stage in camp right now where we’re doing a lot of stuff like that, experimenting.”

I think I saw Jake Plummer holding for the kicker in Denver last year, if I am recalling correctly. I am not sure if he did this all year or just for a few games.

So what is the over/under on Carr being the holder by mid season?

:stirpot:

Depends on who you ask.... *cough* SWTBound *cough*

:stirpot:

P.S. - I think it would awesome to have Rosenfels as the holder. It's like having Doug Flutie! (sorta)

I dunno, but isn't that right out of Dom Caper's playbook ?
Just kidding of course, because in his wildest dreams Capers probably would let his imagination wander enough to consider something so radical by his standards.

Carr would be just as lousy a holder as he is a qb...why would i want that?

No doubt about it. I think giving Rosenfels a shot at holder is a great idea for the diversity of weapons on this team. Keep the other side guessing.

Just an FYI--both Kris Brown and Chad Stanley played QB in college in addition to their kicking duties. Not as good as having an NFL QB obviously, but they should be capable of a trick play.

Yea he did.

I wouldn't mind trying Sage as a holder, but hasn't Brown been having enough trouble being consistant lately without adding another variable? Also, one of may favorite plays in Texans history was the fake FG option run by Stanley and Brown against the Jags (Near the bottom of the page). It took the defense completely by suprise and the outside defender looked completely clueless as to what to do. Who would ever expect a Kicker/Punter option run?

See above. :shades:

What happened, Did Carr not sign poor little Jeffy's autograph once?

SWT = Jeffy.

wouldn't know, A) Im not Jeffy, and B) I'd never ask that man for an autograph.....

and even if i asked him for one, he would probably be to "locked on" to his primary fan target to see me

I have Carr's autograph. Got it last year at a meet the team event; interesting experience, now that I remember it, I think I'll tell y'all about it. So as Carr was signing my football, I pointed out that his handwriting sucks. And will you guess what he said? Carr tried to tell me about how his school teachers sucked growing up, hadn't taught him good penmanship. He went on to point out that the pen had a dull tip and was almost out of ink, and the ball I had given him wasn't the kind of ball he was used to signing from his Fresno State days. Not only that, but he was really jumpy; kept looking around like someone was going to come out of nowhere and level him. Only David Carr can get sacked in street clothes in the stadium hallway.

The guy's a string of excuses, I swear.
