Texan's "Talented young safety combination"

According to todays Chronicle Article by Dale Robertson:

"In Glenn Earl and C.C. Brown, the Texans believe they have one of the NFL's most talented young safety combinations."

Until a few weeks ago, it appeared to be the concensus of this board that safety was probably the weakest area of the whole Texan's team. No one that I can recall has suggested that the Texan's safeties are among the most talented in the league. This is quite a transformation in less than a month.

Of course now that training camp has started and we have some injuries at cornerback, I am sure that many are now concerned about our depth at cornerback instead of safety. Who would have thought that safety might be a strength for us. Maybe we do not need to place a high priority on acquiring a free agent safety, or on drafting one in the off season. This could turn out to be very good news if it is true.

Well, of course the Texans would say the safeties don't suck.

I'm still waiting for the press release that goes, "Yeah, our safeties really blow. They might as well not even try, because they're going to be replaced next off-season." Somehow, I don't think it's going to happen.

This is the same Texans PR department that last year said, "Our offensive line is leaps and bounds ahead of where it's ever been."

If Earl is health he could probably be good, I mean most people had him ranked as the first saftey under Sean Taylor, before he got hurt in college.

Well, after watching the two of these guys play last season I was impressed with their play, and ability put a hit on someone. I don't know if they are the NFL's most talented but they are talented.

100% agree...He would have been the second S in that draft if not for his knee injury. IM a ND fan so pardon me being bias. This should be his break out year, because it usually will take a year for a man to get his legs under him after his surgery. I’m more concerned about CB then our S position. We really need someone to step up. PB has the talent, but I am very concerned about his decision making and tackling abilities. Sanders is OK for a back up or nickel back, but I don't think he has the talent to start for an extended period. Faggins is the same. I really hope they are looking at the waiver wires closely.

I like both Earl and Brown , My thought has always been that they are both best suited for the Strong Safety position and that neither has the cover ability to play the Free Safety .... experience is a huge factor at the FS spot which neither has a whole lot of . No time like the present for them to get some .....

As for the CB spot . yeah I have concerns about depth , especially since Faggins went down . I think he was poised for a break out season . But I do expect all the DB's to look much improved this season for the most part due to the scheme change and the new players along the front seven who can actually generate a pass rush ...... The pass rush is possibly the biggest factor in having a good secondary . QB has all day to throw eventually the DB's are gonna get beat .:twocents:

It is known that our secondary is the weak link on the team specifically due to tenure. We are young and going through a new staff that will invariably yield a new scheme and new lingo.

Mostly everyone has said let's take a wait and see approach.

Here is a link to another article in today's Chronicle by John McClain talking about the great success that Glenn Earl is having. We appear to be having a run on safety articles today.

One interesting remark that Mr. McClain offers in his article is as follows:

"Earl and free safety C.C. Brown are interchangeable. The Texans spin their safeties, which means they have to play both positions."

I have never heard of "spinning" your safeties. How often is this done around the NFL? This appears to mean that the traditional free satety/strong sefety desgnation may not mean a lot in this defensive scheme.

It's interesting that the word spin was used when referencing our safeties.

I will leave it at that.

I still think the secondary needed to be addressed through draft or free agency, and it will come back to bite us on the butt. This year, we play a lot of teams known for their passing ability.

They are both young, that is true. And they both have talent, its just they are both SS, from what it looks like. The SS from ND has enough speed to play FS, I am not gonna try and spell his name, and he is a junior this year.

I like both of our safeties....I think that C.C is going to have the hardest time this year playing FS, but I like the fact that both of them are physical and not afraid to come down hill and put their hat into it..

I couldn't agree more! they are both very good SS that can bring the wood. i think Brown is a little ahead of Earl in that postion, however, they are only SS and we still need a FS who will come in here and be a ball hawk and be a lights out hitter.

You know....Michael Lewis (Eagles SS) is an unrestricted free agent after this season. He is from Rosenberg, TX and would love to come play for the home team. Any thoughts?

Why do some of you feel like the secondary is a "weak link" that should have been addressed in the draft? Please explain.

I mean it's not exactly a big secret that this team has never been able to pressure the opposing quarterback, or stop the run. Last year, I believe C.C. Brown actually led the team in tackles. Isn't there something drastically wrong with that picture?

So I don't understand how you can point fingers at the secondary if the front 7 can't pressure or stop the run. If they can't do that . . .then of course Dunta is going to struggle . . .of course Faggins is going to struggle . . . of course Glen Earl is going to struggle . . . of course C.C. is going to struggle. How can you evaluate how good or bad they are, when they are being hung out to dry to begin with?

If the Texans finally get pressure on the QB this season, some of you will marveling over how good the secondary is. But if they give the QB all day long to throw again, the same lot of you will be screaming for secondary help in the 2007 draft.

So if I read you correctly someone will be wrong and you will be right? Ohhh, for the love of omniscience.... :)

I beleive the general consensus was that we had two starting SSs, and no real FS....... far as I know, no one was unhappy with either CCBrown, or Glenn Earl as players....

I think that we have a good safety combination, and i believe that we have a lot of depth at the position, we have Michael Stone, and Kevin Curtis, so i think that we will have a good Safety squad for a couple of years...
